Jay Dee Garwood, 63, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 24, 2010 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab. Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. A visitation will be held Saturday at the church at 9 a.m.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; children, Jayson Garwood of Grundy Center and Charlotte Taylor of Shell Rock; his mother, Clara Garwood of Vinton; grandchildren, Shantel and Macy Garwood, and Candace and Olivia Taylor; and brothers, Ted Garwood of Ogden and Sam Garwood of Vinton. He was preceded in death by his father, Macy E. Garwood.

Jay was born July 20, 1946 in Dexter to Macy and Clara Garwood. He graduated from Guthrie Center High School. Jay married Carol Roth in Des Moines on June 26, 1965. Jay owned and operated Garwood Electric and worked as a maintenance electrician for Chamberlain Manufacturing. He owned Garwood Trucking until his death.

Jay liked to go fishing with his grandchildren and listen to music. He always loved a good cup of coffee and a card game.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Hope Lodge in Rochester, MN.

Sara Gallegos
Born in San Benito, TX on September 27, 1938
Departed on June 4, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Sara Gallegos, 71, of Cedar Rapids died Friday, June 4, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital following a brief illness.

A visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 pm.

Survivors include her children, Anthony Vargas of Independence, IA, Celia Smith (Dave) of Cedar Rapids and Kelly Faulkner of Independence, IA; Sister, Delores Depa of Florida; Brothers, Ray Yzaguirre (Sharon), Emilio Yzaguirre, Bud Ysaguirre (Judy) all of Illinois. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Michael, Veronica and Victoria Vargas, Aaron and Jonathon Faulkner, and Amanda Smith and Alicyn Kane.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Rebecca Villarreal.

Sara Yzaguirre was born September 27, 1938 in San Benito, TX the daughter of Baltazar & Josefine Yzaguirre. She was a homemaker before retiring. Sara moved to Cedar Rapids in August of 2006. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her and knew her.

Catherine M. Mottet Godwin
Born in Riverside, IA on September 21, 1922
Departed on June 8, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Catherine M. Mottet Godwin, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday June 8, 2010 at Higley Mansion . Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m where a vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Henry; children, Ronald (Linda) Godwin of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Rick) Godwin of Olympia, Washington, Marshall Godwin, Deborah Godwin, Laurie (John) Erlacher, Brian Godwin, Amy (Jeff Pick) Godwin and Mark Godwin, all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Duane (Carol) Mottet of Brighton; sister, Delores Brown of Mt. Pleasant; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Francis, Bernard, and Richard; sisters, Helen Mc Dowell and Jeneta Weltha; and daughter-in-law, Mary Ann.

Catherine was born September 21, 1922 in Riverside, to Lawrence and Mary Streb Mottet. She married Henry H. Godwin on October 13, 1945 in Washington, Iowa. Catherine worked in the Godwin family restaurant business for over five decades. She was a survivor of the Great Depression and a member of the “Greatest Generation”. Catherine was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and very active in church activities through the years – St. Bernedette’s Circle, president of the Altar and Rosary Society, hosting the coffee hour after services along with husband, Henry, and was responsible for cleaning the altar server’s robes. Catherine will be remembered as a great cook and was known for her great chicken noodles. Her children will miss her dinner rolls, coffee cakes, and chocolate cake.

Many thanks to the staff at Higley Mansion for their help and concern during her stay.

Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Building Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lauree Gerber
Born in Sheldon, Iowa on July 25, 1921

Lauree Wood Gerber, 88, a resident of The Manor at the Meth-Wick Community, died July 10, 2010, at The Woodlands. The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. Brenda L. Peconge of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Wednesday prior to the funeral service.

Survivors include two sons, John (Toby) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and David (Margaret) of Lakeland, Florida; two daughters, Barbara Anderson (Joe) of Bloomington, Indiana, and Marcia Welsh of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Meredith Cunha (Reuven) of Massachusetts, Jacob Gerber of Taiwan, Christopher Gerber of Florida, Kristen King (John) of Indiana, Jeremy Anderson of Indiana, Jason Welsh (Natalie) of Texas, and Courtney Rees (Michael) of Texas; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Jean Karrick (Roger) and JoAnne Levenhagen, both of Cedar Rapids; also nine dear nieces and nephews.

Lauree was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Mary Casavant.

Lauree was born July 25, 1921, in Sheldon, Iowa, daughter of Michael and Martha Krahling Wood. She graduated from East High School and Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and was a high school teacher in George, Hartley, and Sheldon, Iowa, before marrying John M. Gerber on April 27, 1946, and moving to Cedar Rapids. She assisted in the operation of Gerber Plumbing and Heating Company from 1955 to 1987. She participated in school, church, and community activities, serving on the church council at First Lutheran, the board of directors for Hawthorne Hills Housing Corporation, the Cedar Rapids Community School Board for twelve years, and the board of the Grant Wood Area Education Agency for five years. John died in December 1998, and Lauree moved to the Meth-Wick Community three years later. She joined Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in November 2003. She was also a member of Chapter LI, P.E.O., and the United Nations Association.

Lauree enjoyed every opportunity to be with family and friends. Her love for travel, especially in the motorhome, was often the means for bringing family members together. Motorhome trips to Alaska, Nova Scotia, and the Copper Canyon in Mexico were highlights of their retirement years. After John’s death, she often travelled to be with family, and was privileged to enjoy a trip to Germany and the Alpine countries with Barbara and family, as well as a trip to the Netherlands and Germany with Marcia.

Since December, 2001, Lauree has appreciated the benefits of life as a part of the Meth-Wick Community.

Her family sends special thanks to the caring staffs of Mercy Hospice and the Meth-Wick Community.

Robert John Griffith

Robert John Griffith, 25, of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly of Ely, passed away July 25, 2010.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at New Covenant Bible Church. Rev. Michael Hancock of Hope Chapel, Stafford, VA and Rev. Kim Pagel will officiate. A private burial will be held at Roger's Grove Cemetery, rural Ely, IA.

Imelda F. Geraghty
Born in Arden on September 21, 1909
Departed on July 31, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Imelda F. Geraghty, 100, of Cedar Rapids, died at Mercy Hallmar Residential Care Center. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Interment: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and a vigil service held at 6 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Imelda is survived by her children, Sr. Sheila Geraghty of Monticello, Pat (Pam) Geraghty, Rose (Ron) Denny, and Colleen Arnold, all of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren, Kara (Pat) Callanan, Joe (Kim) Denny, Mark (Jaci) Denny, Heather (Matt) Hasley, Brian (Stephanie) Geraghty, Shannon (Dane) Clark, DJ (Kathy) Arnold, Brigid (Tim) Christianson, Stephen (Charlotte) Arnold, Kevin Arnold, and Abby (Dan) Nelson; and seventeen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Joseph; sisters, Doris Doran and Mary Kathleen Foster; brother, Paul Byrne; and son-in-law, Duane Arnold Jr.

Imelda was born September 21, 1909 in Arden, Iowa to Peter and Laura Nau Byrne. She graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1928. She married Joseph Geraghty on June 30, 1938 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. She worked for Northwestern Bell for many years, retiring in 1966. Imelda was the oldest member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and was also a member of St. Margaret’s Circle. She enjoyed playing cards with her special friends at Plaza East and doing needlework. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Catherine McAuley Center or Hospice of Mercy.
