Bette Ann (Clark) Gifford 68, of 1624 Miami Drive NE, died Saturday, August 7, 2010. Memorial services will be held at 3 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. John Keizer of the Springville United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her children, Scott Phelps, Brad Phelps, and Rex Phelps all of Cedar Rapids, and Cynthia Tate of Ava, Missouri, her mother Ruth Clark of Cedar Rapids, sister Marty (Don) Harper of Anamosa, two brothers Marlin Clark of Martelle, Iowa, and Paul Clark of Cedar Rapids, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father Marvin Clark and her brother Mark Clark.

Bette was born May 17, 1942 in Cedar Rapids. She was employed by Rockwell-Collins for 30 years as a quality inspector.

William E. "Bill" Grow
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on May 29, 1930
Departed on August 11, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

William E. “Bill” Grow, 80, of Cottage Grove Place passed away on Wednesday August 11, 2010 after an extended illness. Services at 1:00 PM on Sunday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories will also include military rites. Rev. Donald Bruggeman will officiate. Entombment at Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum. Friends may call the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Saturday August 14.

Survivors include his daughter, Jill Runde Voss and her husband, Tom of Hiawatha; a son, Scott and his wife, Jolene of Arvada, Colorado; brother, Donald of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Billy Grow of Dillon, Colorado, Elise Runde Voss of New York and Maddie and Derrick Voss of Hiawatha. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a son-in-law, Loren Runde.

Bill was born on May 29, 1930 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Lloyd and Helen Petersen Grow. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1950 where he not only excelled scholastically but in every sport he participated in. Bill married Vera A. Vitek on December 23, 1951 in Cedar Rapids. She passed away in 2008. Bill, along with his wife, owned and operated Bill Grow TV from 1953 until his retirement in 1992. After retirement he could be found in the kitchen cooking and baking tasty treats. He was a member of VFW Post No. 788 and proudly served in the Army during the Korean War.

He enjoyed league bowling, fishing, gardening and especially the time spent with family and friends at their cabin on Lake Delhi. Bill liked to tinker and could fix just about anything. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend who will always be remembered.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given in Bill’s memory to Camp Courageous.

The family would like to extend a special “Thank you” to Cottage Grove Place and St. Luke’s Hospice for the excellent care and compassion they have shown to the family. They would also like to thank Don Grow, Paul and Nancy Jerabek, all the families from Omaha, Joanne Holmes and Pat Bilsand for the support, thoughtfulness and help they have offered the family.

Frank B. Gagle
Born in Colfax, Iowa on January 28, 1942

Frank B. Gagle 68, of 1055 Brockman Ave, Marion, died Thursday, August 19, 2010, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday in Grace Baptist Church. Pastor Cecil Ballard will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife Paula, son Frank Patrick Gagle and wife Jenny of Des Moines, daughter Kimberly Fitzpatrick and husband Tim of California, and daughter Amy Howard and husband Larry of Lisbon, and two sisters Delores Bitting of Arizona, and Jeri Hutchins of Colfax, and brother Richard Gerischer of Missouri. Nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Patrick Carey and Frank Gagle.

Frank was born January 28, 1942 in Colfax, Iowa. His father died while he was an infant and he was raised by his mother Ruth Carey and step-father Patrick Carey. He married Paula Simpson on April 28, 1984 in Waterloo. He was a sales representative for McGrath Motors and Bob Mickey Chrysler. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the Elks Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Arnold W. Glaser

Arnold W. Glaser, 96, of 3 Pennsylvania Place, Ottumwa, died August 28, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. Rev. Bill Warhover of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church will officiate. Friends may call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

He was born near Durant, IA on April 20, 1914 to Jens and Elsie (Petersen) Glaser. He graduated valedictorian from Durant High School in 1932.

He joined the Navy in January 1942 after Pearl Harbor, serving as Chief Petty Officer during WWII. He served in the Naval Reserves and was recalled during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Green Cove Springs, Florida.

He married Hazel Hachmann on October 1, 1949 in Davenport. They moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked for 26 years at Collins Radio (now Rockwell) as a government inspector of communication equipment used in the military and in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. They had one daughter, Sandra (Ric) Miller of Ottumwa. Hazel died on January 19, 1976. He married Mildred Goodwater on August 6, 1977. She died March 29, 2001. He lived in Cedar Rapids until July 2006 and moved to Ottumwa to be near his daughter. He lived in Ottumwa for the last four years with the help and wonderful care of the staff of Pennsylvania Place and Vista Woods Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his first and second wives, his parents, a sister Velma Untiedt of Davenport and special friend Verda Thurm of Cedar Rapids. He is survived by his daughter, a sister, Eleanor (Earl) Lilienthal of New Liberty, two grandsons, Ryan (Kristy) Miller of Kelley and Joshua Miller of Ottumwa, two great-grandchildren, Caden and Addyson Miller of Kelley, and a stepdaughter, Patricia Goodwater (Jerry) Carter of Hurst, TX.

He was a member of Echo Hill Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, line dancing, golfing, bowling and playing cards. He often attended the Witwer Senior Center and enjoyed their many activities. He was a long-time member and past chancellor of Knights of Pythias, Star of the West, Lodge #1.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, his nephews Ronald and Randy Schnack, Kevin Lilienthal, and Dick Lensing.

Memorials may be directed to Echo Hill Presbyterian Church or to a hospice of the donor’s choosing.

Barbara Garnant

Barbara Garnant passed away October 5 2010 at 88 years of age, after a very long struggle with Alzheimers. Services at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.

She was the daughter of Clara Schminke Clay and John Amos Clay of Marion and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Barbara graduated from Franklin High School. She graduated from Coe College where she became a life-long member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority.

Barbara had been an active member of the Peoples Church for many years. Her interests included a passion for music and for genealogy research. She passed her enthusiasm for music onto her children and grandchildren. Her genealogy research took her on many paths the family traveled.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Jacquelin Clay Montgomery of Wauwatosa, WI, and her husband of 63 years, Raymond H Garnant. She is survived by her children, Chrys Garnant of Middletown, NJ and Monte Garnant of Burnsville, MN; grandchildren, Sarah Garnant Whitney of Apple Valley, MN, Lara Garnant of Middletown, NJ, Andrea Garnant of Des Moines, IA and Brian Garnant of Bloomington, MN; and great-grandchildren Hannah, Ada, and Josiah Whitney of Apple Valley, MN; her brother-in-law Maurice Garnant and wife Rachel Garnant of rural Cedar Rapids; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Remembrances may be made in her name to the Cedar Rapids Symphony/Orchestra Iowa.

Viola G. Godfrey
Born in Nebraska City, Nebraska on September 10, 1911
Departed on October 19, 2010. Resided in West Union, Iowa.

Viola G. Godfrey, 99, of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, formerly of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday October 19, 2010 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union after a short illness. Services at 3:00 PM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call after 2:00 PM. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, June (Lester) Shogren of Clermont and Janice Reittinger of Atkins. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Leslie (Kevin), Nicole (Tom), Trisha (Lee), Erik, special grandchildren; Greg, and Denise (Dean); and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 10 brothers and sisters.

Viola was born on September 10, 1911 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Nancy Johnson Rakes. She married Clarence A. Godfrey on December 24, 1930 in Sidney, Iowa. He died in 1962. Viola was a homemaker and child care provider for many years. She was an avid Cornhusker fan and enjoyed the time she spent with her beloved family and many friends.

Memorial donations may be given to Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska.

“The family would like to give a special thanks to all of Viola’s friends and neighbors for looking out for her over the years”.
