Raymond L. Nelson, 77, of 1813 C Ave NE, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003 in Manor Care following a long illness. Services with Military honors at 9 AM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Steve Hindman will officiate. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 8:30 AM on Saturday.
Survivors include three sons Col Retired Ray A. Nelson and wife Ruth Ann of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Larry D. Nelson and wife Sonja of Flower Mound, Texas, and Kevin F. Nelson and wife Kimberly of Cedar Rapids, a brother John Nelson of Wadena, Minnesota, five sisters Anna Youngblut of Lisbon, Iowa, Bonnie Salasek of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Carolyn Manges of Indiana, Dorothy Zinkle of Nevada, and Thelma Wasson of Florida, 11 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a brother Ole.
Raymond was born October 19, 1926 in Indianola, Iowa to Norence and Florence Lange Nelson. He married Betty Lou Comreid on March 12, 1950 in Cedar Rapids. She died October 24, 2001. He was a tile setter for Applebys and Horn Tile Company for 38 years retiring in 1989. He was US Navy Veteran of WW II. He was a member of VFW Post No 788, and the bricklayers union. He enjoyed making wooden toys for his grandchildren.

Bertha B. Masterhan
Born in Millboro, South Dakota on December 23, 1913
Departed on May 5, 2004. Resided in Gladbrook, IA.

Bertha B. Masterhan, 90, a resident of the Westbrook Acres Care Center in Gladbrook, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died there Wednesday, May 5, 2004, following a long illness of Alzheimer's. Graveside services and interment at 1:30 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son Delbert Masterhan and wife Janice of Marion, three sisters Elsie Goodall of Cedar Rapids, and Leona and Mildred of Spokane, Washington, three grandchildren including Todd Masterhan Jeanette of West Burlington, Iowa, and several great-grandchildren including Katia and Scott Masterhan. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and six brothers and sisters.
Bertha was born December 23, 1913 in Millboro, South Dakota to Claude and Bessie Hills Warner. She married Dale D. Masterhan on July 17, 1934 in Manchester, Iowa. He died January 3, 1997.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

James Frederick Morrill
Born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin on July 26, 1939
Departed on May 5, 2004. Resided in Seymour, MO.

James Frederick Morrill, 64, of Seymour, MO, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 of colon cancer. At Jim's request, there will be no visitation and his body has been cremated. Memorial services honoring Jim's life will beheld on Monday, May 10, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery with military rites by Hanford American Legion Post No 5 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Friends may register at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Monday.
Jim was born to Duane Todd Morrill and Helen Graham Morrill on July 26, 1939 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He graduated from Gresham High School in Gresham, WI in 1957. Jim served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army and was a very proud American. In 1964, Jim married Pauline Quinlan of Hazel Green, Wisconsin and together they shared 40 wonderful years. Jim's career in architecture and construction administration allowed his family and him to reside in many places throughout the country. He was most recently employed as a Construction Administrator for Christner, Inc. in Springfield, Mo. Jim's interests included fishing, boating and hunting, particularly in the north Wisconsin woods, and his love of nature and the outdoors will be instilled in his children and grandchildren for years to come. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, telling stories, reading and most of all, spending time with his family whom he loved very much.
Jim is survived by his wife Pauline and their three children; Cindy O'Gorman and husband Kevin of Steamboat Springs, CO; Brian Morrill and wife Mary of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Ayme Bergen and husband Bruce of Marion, IA. Also surviving are five grandsons, who were his best fishing buddies, two granddaughters, whom he adored, several friends and many extended family members who will miss Jim's presence in their lives very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Tom and Bill Morrill, and a nephew Ryan Morrill.
A memorial fund has been established.
Dad, we couldn't have asked for a more loving father, a more loyal and giving husband to our mother, or a more precious grandfather to our children. Thank you for showing us every day how much you loved and cared about us. Even though you won't be here with us, our children will always know their Grandpa and your gift of humor will be treasured in our hearts forever.

Gerald (Jerry) Ray Newport
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on October 6, 1927

Gerald R. “Jerry" Newport, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died at Manor Care, Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Daniel Clark-Bridges of Hope Lutheran. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. and after 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of Memories.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; children, Diane Janda of Marion, Larry (Mary) Newport of Kansas City, MO, and Tom (Stephanie) Newport of Cedar Rapids; brother, Leonard “Karl" (Dolores) Newport of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Jade Barta, Mindy Sorg, Thad Newport, and Acacia Leatherman, Shelby Newport and Grant Newport; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Dale.

Jerry was born October 6, 1927 in Cedar Rapids and married Jeanne LaVonne Swecker there on April 16, 1950. Jerry grew up in the family vegetable and flower business and operated Newport’s Flowers with his wife, Jeanne, and brothers, Karl and Dale. He retired in 1997. He was a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church, a member of the Cedar Rapids Boat Club, the Power Squadron, Scottish Rite of Masonry, Antique Club, Grotto, and the Shriners. He enjoyed photography, collecting model trains and spent most of his life restoring old cars with his father and sons. Jerry was a great friend to his community, and a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Mabel Moore
Born in Daggett, Michigan on January 12, 1914
Departed on April 24, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Mable Moore, 90, of Evergreen Estates II, died there Saturday, April 24, 2004 after a long illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Steven Rosonke. Burial: Mt. Calvary cemetery. Friends may call at Turner West Funeral Home today from 3 to 7 p.m. where a vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. and from 12 to 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Survivors include a son Thomas and wife Brenda Moore of Solon.

Mable was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and four sisters.

Mable was born January 12, 1914 in Daggett, MI and married Floyd Moore on October 9, 1952 in Cedar Rapids. He died in 2000. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Cedar Rapids Chapter Iowa Council of United Blind and the Support Group For Low Vision And Blind.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cedar Rapids Hospice of Mercy.

John E. ''Jack'' McDonald
Born in Cedar Rapids, IA on December 28, 1920
Departed on April 21, 2004. Resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

John E. 'Jack' McDonald, 83, of 6844 Kent Dr. NE, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Services at 10 AM Monday in St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Rev. David Schatz of St. Pius X Catholic Church will officiate. Entombment in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 6 PM on Sunday with a wake service beginning at 5 PM.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rosemary, a daughter Rosanne Newkirk and husband John of Cranford, New Jersey, two sons John McDonald II and wife Vera of Marion, and Michael McDonald of Cedar Rapids, six grandchildren, Chris, Brian, and Andrew Newkirk, Cristy Harwood and husband Tim, Glenn McDonald, and Sarah Devereux and husband Greg, five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Matthew Harwood, Mahlan Sharf, Jacob Devereux, and Jaden McDonald, a brother Roger McDonald and wife Patti of Connecticut, his aunt Trudy Miller of California, and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jack was born December 28, 1920 in Cedar Rapids to Glenn and Gladys Holding McDonald. He graduated from Franklin High School and attended Coe College for a year. He married Rosemary Robinson on April 26, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. He served in the US Army during WW II, from June 1943 to February 1946. He worked for Iowa Steel and Iron Works for 41 years and for Iowa Manufacturing as Safety Director for one year. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and the American Legion, and a past member of the Elks, and of Machinists Union Local 831. He enjoyed feeding birds and working in his yard, and camping and fishing especially along the Mississippi River in Northeast Iowa. He was a good husband and father and loved his home. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren., and great-grandchildren. Jack will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mildred O. Martin
Born in Columbus Junction, IA on February 23, 1927
Departed on April 20, 2004. Resided in Belle Plaine, IA.

Service: Friday, April 23, 2004
Mildred O. Martin, 77, of Belle Plaine, formerly of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. A Memorial Service will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church in Marion at 11:00 A.M. Friday. The Rev. Linda Livingston will officiate. Lunch will be served in Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Sue Kocer and husband Robert of Cedar Rapids, and Linda Jenkins and husband Jeff of Aurora, CO; six grandchildren, Julie Hall of Cedar Rapids, Mike Hall of Iowa City, Samantha Hall of Iowa City, Jill O'Neill and husband Gene of Englewood, CO, Aaron Spratte of Englewood, CO, and Ben Jenkins of Aurora, CO; a great granddaughter, Anya O'Neill of Englewood, CO; two brothers, Roland Underwood and wife Betty of Winfield, and Arlo Underwood and wife Marguerite of Colorado Springs, CO; life long friends, Nancy Fox of Solon and Eleanor Hickle of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Mildred was born February 23, 1927 in Columbus Junction the daughter of Richard and Grace Orris Underwood. She attended a one-room country school called Shellbark through the fourth grade, and then went to Winfield Consolidated School from fifth grade to graduation. Following high school, Mildred attended the American School of Business and her first job was working at the Iowa Ordnance Plant. It was at Mildred's next job, working as a bookkeeper at the local farm equipment store, where she met her future husband, Harold S. Martin. They were married on April 6, 1947 in Winfield.
One of her biggest accomplishments was learning to drive an 18 wheeler. She and Harold drove as a team across the U.S. for many years, collecting memorabilia and memories. In later years Mildred enjoyed cross-stitch, gardening, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She loved walking, and Belle Plaine residents commented that she must have worn out a lot of shoes during the years that she lived there. She enjoyed doing volunteer work, and Mildred was named Volunteer of the Year in Belle Plaine. Mildred was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be missed.
Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
