Herman Allen McCalla, 90, of 5110 – 16th Avenue SW, died at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy on Monday, September, 15, 2008, after a long illness. Services: 1 P.M.; Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Brenda Ehret of the Unity Center. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 P.M. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Marvel; son, William McCalla; daughter, Sharon Svoboda, all of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Lori Svoboda, Lenae Grade, and Dave McCalla.

Herman was born on December 2, 1917 in Bedford, Iowa, to Willis and Mae McCalla. He married Marvel Chudlic in Cedar Rapids on April 5, 1957. He worked at the Water Pollution Control Plant for the City of Cedar Rapids from 1956 to 1979. Herman was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. To know him was to love him. He was not one to give up easily and now receives his final reward and rest. Herman was a gentle, compassionate man who will be missed greatly because he loved deeply.

We would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Mercy for the loving care they provided for Dad as well as to our family during such a difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking that memorial donations be made to the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Jemima Mina McCallister Owens
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on April 26, 1922

Jemima Mina McCallister Owens, 82, of 3200 Soutter Ave. S.E., died Saturday, November 20, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness. Services: 11 AM Wednesday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with the Rev. George Bishop officiating. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the Chapel of Memories after 10:30 AM on Wednesday..
Surviving is a son, James Owens and wife Susan of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Sandra Dunlap and husband Doug of Washington, Iowa, three sisters, Rachel Dodds and Eileen Stewart of Coventry England, and Lily Lavery of Belfast, Northern Ireland, 7 grandchildren, Laurie Ambrosy Todd, Kelly Printy Jeff, Scott Owens Darlene, Bradley Dunlap Stephanie, Brian Dunlap Marci, Brent DunlapJill and Lisa Ringwald Mark, fifteen great grandchildren, and a sister in law, Lily Murphy of Bangor, Northern Ireland.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Owens, a daughter Irene Dove, two brothers, William Brown and George Brown, and a sister, Cassie Brown.
She was born on April 26, 1922 at Belfast, Northern Ireland to George and Rachel McCallister Brown and was married to James Owens Sr. on February 15, 1940 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
She and her husband were former owners of the Cashman Plumbing and Heating Company where she was their bookkeeper and accountant. Mina also had worked in food service for both the St. Matthew's and All Saints schools. She was a charter member of Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Women of Other Nations Club.
Mina came to the United States with her husband and three children in December of 1949 and made her home in Cedar Rapids. Her life centered around her family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her close circle of friends. Her loving nature and generous spirit will be greatly missed by family and friends overseas and here.
Her family wishes to thank the nursing staff and doctors at 5th floor center at St. Luke's Hospital for the compassionate care given Mina.
Friends may, if they wish, make contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Jeanne LaVonne Morrison
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 15, 1918
Departed on September 18, 2008. Resided in Torrington, WY.

Jeanne LaVonne Morrison, 90, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday September 18, 2008 in the Community Hospital in Torrington, Wyoming following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, where visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter and son in law, Carolyn and Toby Lewis, two granddaughters, Christy Ray Arnold of Cheyenne, Cherri Troy Gay of Auburn, Wyoming and eight great grandchildren, Cassie, Jess, Sarah, and Sydney Arnold, Lynne and Toby Stevens and Gunner and Emilie Gay.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Donald Morgan and three sisters, Betty Stepanek, Virginia Proescholdt, and Patricia Morgan, and one infant granddaughter.
Jeanne was born August 15, 1918 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Willard and Alta Adams Morgan. She graduated from Grant High School in January of 1936. She married Woodrow Wilson Morrison on July 24, 1941. They lived in Cedar Rapids for eight years before moving to Evergreen CO for two years. Then they moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where Jeanne was employed by the Wyoming Stock Grower's Association for 22 years, where she was a secretary and kept track of all brand inspections until her retirement in 1980. The couple moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1988. After the death of her husband in 1994, Jeanne moved back to Torrington in 1999 to be near her daughter. She had lived at Evergreen Court. She was a very active swimmer logging over 2300 total miles. She became the "oldest women to swim 100 miles" in the city of Cheyenne. Jeanne could be found walking; two miles daily, in fact, and was a familiar face around Torrington. She attended the First Congregational Church in Torrington. Memorials may be made to Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Helen J. Mulnix

Helen J. Mulnix, 90, 3750 Walker Road, Walker died Friday, September 19, 2008 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a brief illness. Services: 11:00 A.M. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by The Rev. Gary Pilcher. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Sunday from 4PM to 8PM.
Surviving in addition to her husband Roxie are two sons, Roxie Mulnix, Jr. Karen of Independence and Jerry Mulnix of Central City; her grandchildren, Monty Mulnix Angie, Ronald Mulnix Kathy, Michael Mulnix Amber, Renee Spellacy, Martin Mulnix Alice and Michael VanAmburg; her great grandchildren, Ryan, Vince, Logan, Hunter, Derek, Blake, Kyla and Jena; two sisters, Betty Stoddard and Alene Roberts; a brother, Finis Wilcox June; and her sisters-in-law, Kathryn Wilcox and Phyllis Wilcox.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gene; an infant son; a great grandson, Dalton; a sister, Minnie Sebol; three brothers, G.T. Wilcox June, Charles Wilcox and Clifford Wilcox; and three brothers-in-law, Joe Sebol, Clifford Stoddard and Verlin Roberts.
Helen was born September 6, 1918 in New Cambria, Missouri the daughter of Elmer and Goldie Meeks Wilcox. She married Roxie Kenneth Mulnix, Sr. on August 19, 1939 in New Cambria, Missouri. She had worked at Wilson Packing Plant from 1950 until 1979. She was a member of the Walker Bible Church and the CIO-P3 Union at Wilson's. Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial fund has been established.

Janice Mae Marks
Born in Wilton, Iowa on June 28, 1934

Janice M. Marks, 74, of Cedar Rapids, died September 25, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Private family services will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William B. Harnish will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Monday, September 29, 2008 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park cemetery.

Survivors include her children Karen Darrow of Springdale, AR, Jane Wood and husband Brian of Center Point, and Randy Marks of Colorado. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren Chad Darrow of Springdale, AR, Brett Darrow of Madison, WI, Kelly Darrow stationed in Richmond, VA, and Jennifer and Nicholas Wood of Center Point.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Donald.

Janice Mae Marks was born June 28, 1934 in Wilton, Iowa the daughter of Henry J. and Edna Fick Dall. She was united in marriage to Donald D. Marks on June 21, 1953 in Tipton, Iowa. She worked at home caring for her family, and was a long time American Legion Volunteer. She was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5 Auxiliary, where for many years was very active in many different activities. She was always involved with chairing the Christmas party for children, helping the Vinton School of the Blind, working bingo nights, and doing anything that was needed. Above all Jan was a devoted grandmother who deeply loved each of her grandchildren. She was very proud, and cherished her role as grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jan's honor may be made to St. Luke's Health Programs-Pet Pals Program.

Earlene F. Opperman
Born in Morley on February 7, 1928
Departed on July 12, 2010. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Earlene F. Opperman, 82, of the Meth-Wick Community died Monday July 12, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City after a sudden illness. Graveside services at 11:00 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Merle, one daughter, Laura (Ed) Wootton of Omaha, Nebraska and four sons, Gregory of Phoenix, Arizona, John (Laurie) of Marion and Kenton and Brett both of Cedar Rapids. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and one brother.
Earlene was born on February 7, 1928 in Morley, the daughter of Earl and Frances Osborne Huston. She married Merle B. Opperman on November 5, 1948 in Barnsville, Georgia. Earlene worked at Square D and retired from there after more than 36 years of service. She was a member of the Teamsters Union. Earlene enjoyed fishing, watching the various birds and animals in her yard, gardening, and especially the time spent with her beloved family.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Earlene’s name.

Richard Dean McLaud Jr
Born in Cedar Rapids on November 19, 1977
Departed on October 9, 2008. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Richard Dean McLaud Jr., 30, of 112 Elizabeth Street SW, died at home, Thursday, October 9, 2008 after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel by the Rev. William Harnish. Interment: Oak Shade cemetery, Marion. A visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.

Survivors include his parents, Richard Sr. and Bonnie McLaud of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Joyce McLaud of Cedar Rapids, Marye Ellen McLaud and Jodi James, both of Parker, CO, and; brother, Jeffrey McLaud of Cedar Rapids; and two half-sisters, Lisa and Lora Armstrong, both of Cedar Rapids.

Also surviving are brother-in-law, Tim James; sister-in-law, Dee McLaud, good friends, Damien Lathrop and Michael Randall; four nieces, Kylie, Mallory, Danielle, Shannon; three nephews, Ryan, Jake, and Jimmy; numerous cousins whom he loved very much; and his dog, Lady.

Richard was born on November 19, 1977 in Cedar Rapids. He received a 1st degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do by the age of 9. He received many trophies and awards in karate. Richard worked in concrete and construction until becoming disabled in 2006. He loved spending time with his family which was very important to him. He was an avid Bears fan and enjoyed the football season, NASCAR, and professional wrestling. He loved everyone and had a heart of gold. He will be truly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
