Robert Eisner, 76, William R. Kenan Professor Emeritus of Economics and former chairman of the economics department, died Nov. 25 [1998] at his Evanston home from an illness diagnosed this past summer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 at Alice Millar Chapel. A reception will follow in Room 108 of Harris Hall.

Eisner came to Northwes-tern in 1952 after teaching at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He retired from the University in 1994.

He was an authority on macroeconomics and the economics of business cycles. Among his specialities were business investment, the economics of public budgets and Social Security and tax policy. Eisner was a frequent consultant in the public and private sectors and was a participant in President Clinton's Little Rock Conference in 1992. He was considered a leader in his profession, a productive, prolific scholar, an active contributor to discussion of public economic policy and a widely acclaimed teacher. He was elected president of the American Economic Association in 1987. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Econometric Society.

Eisner was known as a zealous teacher who was as devoted to large lectures in elementary economics as to small seminars for advanced graduate students. His introduction to economics was a signature course at Northwestern that inspired generations of undergraduates.

His latest work was a 20th Century Fund Report, "Social Security: More, Not Less" published by Century Foundation Press in 1998. His previous publications include "The Misunderstood Economy: What Counts and How to Count It," published by Harvard Business School Press in 1994 and appearing since in paperback and several foreign translations.

Eisner also published extensively in professional journals. A two-volume collection of his professional papers is to be published soon by Edward Elgar, under the titles "The Keynesian Revolution, Then and Now" and "Investment, National Income and Economic Policy."

In 1994, Eisner received the John R. Commons Award of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international economic honor society. He was the 15th recipient of the prestigious award.

Eisner was a frequent contributor on economic issues to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times Syndicate and was a guest on television programs including "Chicago Tonight," "Firing Line," "McNeil-Lehrer News Hour" and "Money Line."

He served for 15 years as a trustee of Roycemore School in Evanston.

Eisner was born in New York City. He received a bachelor's degree from City College in New York in 1940, a master's from Columbia University in 1942, and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1951.

Eisner is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith; two daughters, Mary Eisner Eccles of Chevy Chase, Md., and Emily Eisner of Chicago; three grandchildren; and a brother, Alan of Redwood City, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made to the Robert Eisner Economics Fund, Department of Economics, 2003 Sheridan Road, or to Roycemore School, 640 Lincoln St.
