Rose Ann Degenhart
Born August 3, 1914 - Died April 2, 1997
Rose Ann Degenhart, 82, of Dahlgren, died at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.
She was born on August 3, 1914, in Vanderburg County, Indiana, a daughter of John W. and Philamena "Minnie" (Mueller) Ewald. She was a housewife. On January 30, 1935, in Dahlgren, she married Albert G. Degenhart, who survives. She was a member at St. John's Catholic Church in Dahlgren.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 1997, at St. John's Catholic Church in Dahlgren. Rev. Alan Ruppert officiated. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, James P. Degenhart and wife Norma of Vandalia, Paul Degenhart and wife Mary Kay of Compoc, California, and John R. Degenhart and wife Theresa of Dahlgren; a daughter, Sister Mary Louise Degenhart of Fairview Heights; a brother, Alexander "Bud" Ewald of Belle Rive; three sisters, Appolonia Rawls of Dahlgren, Geraldine Hutchcraft of Belle Rive and Erma Ewald of Dahlgren; several nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, Judy Cameron, Kristina Garrison, Philip Degenhart, Jeremy Degenhart, and Darin Degenhart; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha Masi, Steven Masi, and Adam Cameron.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and seven sisters.

Flora Jane Mayberry
Born September 8, 1919 - Died April 3, 1997
Flora Jane Mayberry, 77, of Broughton, died at 1:04 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 1997, at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. She was a retired seamstress, having worked at Elder Manufacturing Co. and Decatur Garment Co. in McLeansboro.
She was born on September 8, 1919, near Dale, a daughter of Thomas and Sallie (Hamilton) Buttry. On February 12, 1938, she married Wilson Mayberry, who died on April 5, 1981. She was a member of the Hamilton County Home Extension Unit, the Dale Ruritan Club and New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
The funeral was at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 1997, at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church near McLeansboro. Rev. C. E. Essary officiated. Burial was in New Prospect Cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Doyle Mayberry and wife Gloria of Decatur, Alabama, and Donald Mayberry and wife Karen of Carmi; a daughter, Helen Cantrell of Broughton; a sister, Veda Sutton of McLeansboro; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to the New Prospect Church or the Kidney Foundation and will be accepted at Gholson Funeral Home.

Edna L. Seng
Born March 16, 1913 - Died April 3, 1997
Edna L. Seng, 84, of McLeansboro, died at 5:55 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 1997 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. She retired after 20 years at Decatur Garment Co. in McLeansboro working as an inspector.
She was born on March 16, 1913, in Kentucky, a daughter of Henry and Edna (Bowling) Hylton. She married Henry G. Seng, on March 13, 1943, in St. Louis. She was a member of Middle Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 1997, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Oddfellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Seng is survived by one daughter, Lena Daily of Carmi; four grandchildren, Bruce Dale of McLeansboro, Rebecca Purcell of Bridgeton, Missouri, Kim Hutchcraft of Ewing and Dan Dale of McLeansboro; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers and two sisters.

Guy P. Allardin
Born March 25, 1917 - Died April 4, 1997
Guy P. Allardin, 80, of McLeansboro, died at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer and used tractor parts dealer.
He was born on March 25, 1917 in Hamilton County, a son of Charles H. and Mary Frances (Dugan) Allardin. On December 9, 1937, he married Ava Knight, who survives. He was a member and deacon of Mt. Olivet General Baptist Church.
The funeral was at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 1997, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Revs. Harold Hughes and Jim Hutchcraft officiated. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Jewell Endicott and Bertha Hill, both of Carmi; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Hayden Allardin; and two sisters, Bethel Peters and Ruth Absher Hiebert.

Verla M. Bowling
Born June 4, 1935 - Died April 7, 1997
Verla M. Bowling, 61, of McLeansboro, died at 4:45 a.m., April 7, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Bowling was a retired office manger for Petrolane.
She was born on June 4, 1935, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Leslie Monroe and Verna Mae (Pierce) Prince. She was a member of St. Clements Catholic Church in McLeansboro and was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Carmi.
She married Joseph M. Bowling on July 20, 1953, at St. Clements Catholic Church in McLeansboro, and he survives.
The funeral was at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in St. Clements Catholic Church in McLeansboro with Father Alan Rupert officiating. Burial was in St. Clements Catholic Cemetery in McLeansboro. The Harre Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Bowling is survived by her husband; two daughters, V. Renee' and husband James R. Renshaw of Harrisburg and Mary Anne and husband John Dale Hopfinger of Dahlgren; three sons, William J. "B. J." and wife Jeannie Lynn Bowling of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Vincent E. and wife Cynthia Bowling of Herrin; and Frank M. Bowling of McLeansboro; eight grandchildren; Joshua Joseph Bowling, Laura Beth Bowling, Jamie Henshaw Gaffner, Jimmy E. Henshaw, Christopher Dale Hopfinger, Daniel Joseph Hofinger, and Matthew Vincent Bowling; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Blair Henshaw; four sisters, Helen Juanita and husband Frank Heninger of McLeansboro, Maxine and husband Coy Waggoner of Marshall; Betty "Pat" and husband John Swartz of McLeansboro; Peggy June and husband Wayne Vaupel of McLeansboro; two brothers, Everett Lee and wife Doris Prince of McLeansboro and Bill E. and wife Roxie Prince of McLeansboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Bowling and two brothers, Robert Milton Prince and Charles Leslie Prince.
Memorials may be made to The American Lung Association and are being accepted at Harre Funeral Home.

Columbus Dawain Smith
Born December 22, 1915 - Died April 8, 1997
Columbus Dawain Smith, 81, of Route 4, McLeansboro, died at 8:58 p.m. on April 8, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer.
He was born December 22, 1915, in Hamilton County, a son of John L. and Florida (McGhee) Smith. He married Mary F. Cutright on May 11, 1946, who survives.
Services were April 11, 1997, at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. George Tuggle officiating. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro with the American Legion Post 106 performing military rites.
Mr. Smith is survived by one son Morris and wife Tonna Smith of Troy; one daughter Marilyn and husband William Morris of Spring, Texas; one brother Virgil Smith of Lavonia, Michigan; five grandchildren, Christopher and Jonathan Morris, Ashley, Matthew and Adam Smith.
He attended Little Springs Primitive Baptist and also New Hope Primitive Baptist Church.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the USS Cleveland and the USS Hutchins and served in both the European and Pacific Theatre.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter Marlene Sue, one brother Oscar, and two sisters Lucille and Dorothy.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

William T. "Bill" Reeves
Born July 19, 1907 - Died April 8, 1997
William T. "Bill" Reeves, 89, of Dale, died April 8, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro.
Mr. Reeves was a retired U. S. Postmaster at Dale.
Born June 19, 1907, in Iowa City, Iowa, he was a son of Otho and Ella Myrtle (Heath) Reeves. On July 19, 1932, he married Mary Ann Cook and she is deceased.
Services were April 13, 1997, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Raymond Clark officiated the service. Burial was in Digby Hill Cemetery.
He was a member of the Dale Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Charles Reeves and wife Sylvia of Scottsdale, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Frank Wooldridge
Born July 22, 1908 - Died April 11, 1997
Frank Wooldridge, 88, of McLeansboro, died at 3:12 a.m. April 11, 1997, at Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado.
He was a retired state employee. He was also a partner and operator of the old Wooldridge General Store in Walpole. After retirement, he drove a school bus for McLeansboro Township High School.
He was born July 22, 1908, in Hamilton County, a son of Samuel Erastus and Flora (Huffstutler) Wooldridge. March 27, 1928, in Mount Vernon, Indiana, he married Hazel Burnett Wooldridge, who died July 6, 1993.
Services were April 13, 1997, at Hebron Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Walpole with the Rev. Kevin Peyton officiating. Burial followed in Hebron Cemetery.
Military flag service at graveside was presented by McLeansboro Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1671.
Harre Funeral Home of McLeansboro was in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by a son, John Wooldridge and wife Donna of Broughton; granddaughter Paula Irvin and husband Brad of McLeansboro; and a great-granddaughter Sara Parrish of McLeansboro.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, member of World War II, member of the McLeansboro VFW Post 1671, a 50-year plus member of Tuscan Masonic Lodge 630 of Walpole, and the Hebron Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Walpole.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son Omer E. Wooldridge; two brothers Omer and Roscoe; and two sisters Grace Nohava and Louella Brockett.
Memorials may be made to the Hebron Cemetery.

Harold C. Bean
Born June 10, 1929 - Died April 15, 1997
Harold C. Bean, 67, of Mascoutah, and formerly of McLeansboro, died at 2:31 p.m., April 15, 1997, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
He was a retired musician.
He was born June 10, 1929, in Equality, the son of William Cletus and Rose Ellem (Parton) Bean.
Graveside services were held April 18, 1997, at Smith Cemetery near Dale, with the Rev. Gerald "Andy" May officiating. Military rites were provided by American Legion Post 106.
The Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro was in charge of local arrangements.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bean is survived by two sons, Harold Bean and Donald Bean and wife Tina, all of Mascoutah; two daughters Brenda Meinders and husband Chris of East Carondelet and Linda Dubin and husband Greg of Fayetteville; and eight grandchildren.
He was a Protestant and a U. S. Navy verteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Venita Smith
Born August 16, 1918 - Died April 16, 1997
Venita Smith, 78, of Broughton, died at 12:01 p.m. on April 16, 1997, in Titusville, Florida.
She was a housewife.
She and her husband helped raise Harold Dean Wheeler of Oblong and Donna Mae Buchanan of Carmi.
She was born August 16, 1918, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Hiram and Emma (St. Clair) Wheeler. On August 12, 1939, she married Aden Smith, who survives.
Services were April 20, 1997, at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. John Lee. Jr. officiating.
Burial was in Digby Hill Cemetery near Dale.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Loretta Duitsmann and husband Ben of Titusville, Florida; and two grandchildren, Karla Hopkins of Florida and Kurt Duitsmann and wife Jana Lee of Kansas.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dale.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.
