Lizzie Ellen Garland
Feb. 12, 1914 – July 23, 2002

Lizzie Ellen Garland, 88, of Greensboro died Tuesday, July 23 at Regency Place Nursing Home in Greenfield after an extended illness. A daughter of the late John S. Todd and Della Smith Todd Riggle, Lizzie was born February 12, 1914 in Lawrence County.

A homemaker, Mrs. Garland has made her home in Greensboro for the past 48 years. She was a member of the Greensboro Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed embroidery, quilting and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Sara Douglass of Lebanon, Mo., Betty Huntsman of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Della (husband Charles) Cathcart of Knightstown; two sons, David (wife Sherry) Garland; six grandsons, Adam and Joseph Garland, Larry D. Huntsman, Jason Stephens, Mike and Wayne Lee Douglass; four granddaughters. Teresa Bolinger, Jenny Bartlam, Laura Cathcart and Beth Stillwell; several great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Jewel (husband Roger) Lewis and Norman Garland, both of Colorado; two sisters, Easter Faubion of Heltonville and Alice (husband Paul) Krause of Cottonwood, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earl E. Garland, whom she wed December 17, 1949; grandson Dennis Douglas; son-in-law Glenn Douglass; and brother-in-law Dick Faubion.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26 at the Marshall & Erlewien Funeral Home, Estell Chapel in Shirley with Rev. Mervin Kilmer officiating. Burial will follow at the Hicksite Cemetery in Greensboro.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Flossie McCorkle
Sept. 7, 1910 – July 26, 2002

Flossie McCorkle, 91, of Carthage, died Friday, July 26 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. She was born September 7, 1910, a daughter of the late Fred and Sallie (Stamp) Donoho.

On August 3, 1929, she married Wilbur M. McCorkle who preceded her in death on April 24, 2002.

Mrs. McCorkle was a member of the East Street Christian Church in Carthage and the Christian Women’s Association. She was a member of the Carthage Bridge Club and a former member of the Carthage Garden Club.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, Norman (wife Mary Lou) McCorkle of Deland, Fla. And Melvin (wife Carolyn) McCorkle of Carthage; one sister, Dorothy Clouse of Davies, Fla., 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. McCorkle were held Tuesday, July 30 at the Todd Funeral, Carthage Chapel in Carthage with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial was in the Carthage Town Cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, July 29 at the funeral home.

Odell L. Pitts
March 27, 1924 – July 24, 2002

Odell L. Pitts, 78, of Carthage died Wednesday, July 24 at Hancock Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. He was born in Flemingsburg, Kentucky on March 27, 1924, a son of the late Fred and Margaret (Fisher) Pitts.

Mr. Pitts was a 1943 graduate of Carthage High School and served during World War 2 in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Pitts was a retired salesman and a photographer having been employed by Interstate Studios. He was a member of Rush Lodge #580 F & AM, Scottish Rite N.M.J. and the Knightstown American Legion.

On July 1, 1944, he married Grace Magee who survives. Other survivors include one son, Larry Pitts of Carthage; two daughters, Marilyn (husband Phillip) Kemple of Daytona Beach, Florida and Jan (husband John) Antosica of Port Orange, Florida; one brother, Ivan Pitts of Pendleton; one sister, Thelma McRoberts of Knightstown; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Service for Mr. Pitts were held Monday, July 29 at the Todd Funeral Home, Carthage Chapel with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery at Carthage.

Visitation was at the funeral hoe Sunday, July 28. The Rush Lodge conducted a memorial service at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Patty L. Melton
Aug. 17, 1948 – July 25, 2002

Patty L. (DeHart) Melton, 53, of rural Carthage, died Thursday, July 25 at the Community East Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief illness. She was born August 17, 1948 in New Castle, a daughter of Troy E. and Margaret L. Thompson DeHart.

Patty was a graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School with the class of 1967. She was an avid Nascar fan and loved to play golf. For the past 11 years, she had worked at Keihin-IPT in Greenfield. She had made her home in Carthage since 1976.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Jesse Ralph Melton whom she married November 30, 1968 in New Castle; two daughters, Tammy (husband Tony) Leone and Pam (husband Jeff) Stirling, both of Greenwood; one son, Kevin (wife Nikki) Melton of New Castle; one granddaughter; her mother, Margaret DeHart of New Castle; four brothers, Dale, Wayne and Lonnie DeHart, all of New Castle and Jerry DeHart of Japan; two sisters, Connie Servos and Debby Raines, both of New Castle; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and man other close family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27 at the Marshall & Erlewien Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel with Rev. Jack Hannum officiating. Burial was in South Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation was held at the funeral home on Friday, July 26 and prior to time of service on Saturday. Memorial contributions can be made to the Leukemia Society.

Jesse L. House
Sept. 3, 1916 – July 26, 2002

Jesse L. House, 85, of Shirley, died Friday, July 26 at his home after an extended illness. A son of the late Jesse Marvin and Bertha Kea (Kruse) House, he was born in Simms, Texas on September 3, 1916.

Jesse was a veteran of World War 2 and served in the U.S. Navy with the rank of Seaman Second Class. He received the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific ribbon and American Area ribbon. He was discharged March 27, 1946. He moved from Missouri to Indianapolis in 1950 and has made his home in Shirley since 1978, moving there from New Palestine. He retired in 1970 from the Richardson Rubber Co. in Indianapolis where he worked as a press operator. He was a member of the Shirley Christian Church and also served as a deacon at the church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Evelyn Meral Neal whom he married on June 7, 1947 in Dordyce, Arkansas; four sons, Dwain Wheelington of Indianapolis, Bob House of Needham and Marvin House of Carthage; three daughters, Lee Hazlett of Arlington, Mary Foster of Shreveport, La. And Ann Wilcher of Shirley; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Opal Gibson and Emma Dailey and one brother, Hugh House.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 29 at the Shirley Christian Church with Jim Jackson officiating. Burial was in McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson.

Visitation was held Sunday, July 28 at the Marshall & Erlewien Funeral, Estell Chapel in Shirley. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shirley Christian Church, P.O. Box, Shirley, IN 47384.

Goldie Edith Walden
Jan. 31, 1915 – July 29, 2002

Goldie Edith Walden, 87, of New Castle, died Monday, July 29 at the Americare Nursing Home in New Castle. A daughter of the late John W. and Lucille Johnson Godsey, she was born January 31, 1915 in Burnside Kentucky.

Mrs. Walden had lived in New Castle since 1933. She was a homemaker and was associated with the Bud Ayers Fruit Market for many years. Goldie had been active member of the Pentecostal faith since 1939 and currently a member of the 26th Street Apostolic Pentecostal Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and ladies prayer group leader.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Ann (husband Bud) Ayers of New Castle; two sons, Rev. Edward Gene (wife Alyce) Walden of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Rev. Jerry W. (wife Mary) Walden of Northumberland, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow W. Walden, whom she married March 17, 1934 and who died March 4, 1995; one brother London Godsey; and two sisters, Rhoda Mason and Lee Hughes.

Funeral services ill be at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the 26th Street Apostolic Pentecostal Church in New Castle with Rev. Don Silvers officiating. Burial will follow in the South Mound Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Marshall & Erlewein Funeral Home, Lewisville Chapel in Lewisville is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary E. Milner
Oct. 11, 1915 – July 29, 2002

Mary E. Milner, 86, a resident of Wilkinson died Monday, July 29. She was born October 11, 1915 in Carmel, a daughter of the late Carl and Maude (Moulton) Henderson.

Mrs. Milner was a lifelong homemaker and owned and operated Mary’s Wedding and Party Cakes. She was very active in the churches that her husband pastored in and in supporting missions. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Milner was a member of the Cadiz Friends Church and Friends Missionary Society.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Ann (husband Duane) Stickler of Marion, Illene (husband Bill) Parrish of New Castle; one son, H. Wayne (wife Carole) Milner of Anderson; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Howard Milner on December 28, 1996, and a special friend, Martha Gard on November 2, 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 2 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Howard Addison officiating. Burial will follow in the McCray Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, August 1 and one hour prior to services on Friday.
