Edwin Wolford Chapman
April 24, 1910 - Aug. 17, 2002

Edwin Wolford Chapman, 92, the father of area residents, died Saturday, August 17 at his home in Jamestown, Ky.

Mr. Chapman was born April 24, 1910 in Russell, Ky., a son of the late James and Pearl (Blankenship) Chapman. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Kendrick of Noblesville, Louise Watts of Knightstown, Emma Hall of Knightstown, and Judy Foley, Nicholasville, Ky.; six sons, Arondell Chapman of Greenfield, Bobby Chapman, St. Augustine, Fla., Wallace Chapman of Greenfield, Donald Chapman, Vero Beach, Fla., Larry Chapman, Jamestown, Ky. and Roger Chapman, Russell Springs, Ky.; two brothers, Alford Chapman of Noblesville and Luther Chapman of Russell Springs, Ky.; two sisters, Sadie Bernard of Alabama, and Ollie Roe Mann of Jamestown, Ky.; 28 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Kennett, Della Grider, Bonnie Chapman, and four brothers, Carlos, Arlos, Cordell and Avery Chapman.

Services for Mr. Chapman were held Tuesday, August 20 at H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel with Bro. Wendell Roberts officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, Jamestown, Ky.

Visitation for family and friends was Monday, August 19 at the funeral home.

Carol D. Souder
Jan. 26, 1937 - Aug. 27, 2002

Carol D. Souder, 65, of Rushville, died Tuesday, August 27 in Rush Memorial Hospital. Born in Rushville on January 26, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Mildred Holden Sherwood.

Mrs. Souder, a 1955 graduate of New Salem High School, was a homemaker and worked for Priddy Fabrics in Rushville for 17 years. Mrs. Souder was an avid quilter and a charter member of the Food, Fad and Fashion Home Ec Club. She attended Center Christian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Harold Souder whom she married February 8, 1957; one son, Steven (wife Ashley) Souder of Rushville; four daughters, Teresa (husband Mike) Bonne of Knightstown, Cathy (husband Greg) Pratt of Rush County, Cindy Beckner of Arlington, and Shari (husband Bruce) Davis of Rushville; six brothers, Jim Sherwood of Glenwood, Harley Sherwood of Andersonville, Charles Sherwood of Warsaw, Dave Sherwood of Andersonville, Bill Sherwood of New Palestine, and Kermit Sherwood of Rushville; two sisters, Colleen Lushell of Rushville and Sandra Schroeder of Rushville; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 30 at the Todd Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. David Bonne officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday, August 29 from 4-8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1401 Chester Blvd., Richmond, IN 47374.

Charles M. Craig
Dec. 29, 1942 - Aug. 22, 2002

Charles M. Craig, 59, of Spiceland died suddenly Thursday, August 22 at his residence. He was born December 29, 1942 in Henry County, a son of the late George and Marion (Weeks) Craig.

Mr. Craig was a 1960 graduate of Knightstown High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from Lucent Technologies in Indianapolis and had also been employed at Draper Shade & Screen for several years. Craig owned and operated a charter boat service and loved to fish and trap shoot.

Survivors include his wife, Ann L. Craig of Spiceland, and one brother, Frank (wife Wanda) Craig of Knightstown.

Services were held Monday, August 26 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Rev. Jack Bimber officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation was from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, August 25 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry Co. Humane Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Martha J. Whitesitt
Sept. 10, 1919 - July 5, 2002

Knightstown resident Martha J. Whitesitt, 82, died Friday, July 5 at Brandywine Manor Nursing Home in Greenfield. She was born September 10, 1919.

Mrs. Whitesitt worked for 18 years in the dietary department at the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children’s Home and had worked at Allison’s during World War 2. She was a member of the Center Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for several ears. She was a member of the 40 & 8 Club, Mays Home Ec. Club and the State Employees Union. She graduated from Gosport High School in 1937 and attended Indiana University.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce (husband John) Sinischo of Mays; two sons, Joe (wife Debra) Whitesitt of Knightstown, and Jim (wife Judy) Whitesitt of Wilkinson; two brothers, Richard Hart of Albany and David Hart of Morristown; three sisters, Betty Pegg, Marian Wood and Nancy Wood, all of Pendleton; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry H. and Vadis C. Hobson Hart, one brother and one sister.

Services were held Monday, July 8 at Greene’s Funeral Home in Knightstown. Visitation was Sunday, July 7 at the funeral home.

Beulah M. Lodge
April 6, 1910 – July 3, 2002

Beulah M. Lodge, 92, a resident of Knightstown, died Wednesday, July 3 at Regency Place Health Care Center in Greenfield. She was born April 6, 1910.

Mrs. Lodge was a caregiver for the elderly at their home and retired from Danners in Knightstown. She had also worked at Guide Lamp in Anderson. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women (B.P.W.)

Surviving are one daughter, Vicki (husband Gerald) Parkhurst of Knightstown; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Bailey of Knightstown; one great-granddaughter, Jordon Bailey of Knightstown; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fay Lodge in 1976.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6 in the Condo & Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Rev. Jeff Landon officiating. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery.

Visitation was held prior to the service on Saturday.

Reathel Chair
April 19, 1914 – July 8, 2002

Former Knightstown Resident, Reathel Clair, 88, died Monday, July 8 at Millers Manor in Rushville. She was born April 19, 1914 in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Rufus Gulley and Shirley Stephenson. Reathel had lived near Mays since 1964 and prior to that, she had lived in the Knightstown area. On May 22, 1930, she married Richard J. Clair and he preceded her in death on March 6, 1974.

She and her husband had been antique dealers during the 1960 and 1970’s. Reathel was an artist of oil paintings and china. She was a charter member of the Art Association of Henry County.

Survivors include one son, Richard D. Clair of Rushville; two brothers, Denver Gulley of New Trenton and Orville Eugene Gulley, address unknown; two sisters, Nellie Moystner of Mays and Ruth Mauck of Scottsdale, Arizona; one sister-in-law, Martha Clair of Knightstown; two grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and seven step-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Mefford, Charles and Clifford preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 12 at Moster & Cox Mortuary in Rushville with James Hundley officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at the mortuary.

Carl Joseph Nicholson
Jan 16, 1916 – July 2, 2002

Carl Joseph “Nick” Nicholson, 86, died Tuesday, July 2 at Morristown. He was born January 16, 1916 in Hancock County to Orval David and Effie Jane (Gilland) Nicholson.

Mr. Nicholson graduated from Greenfield High School in 1934 and attended Purdue University. He previously owned and operated a farm in Hancock County. Nicholson entered politics at the age of 21 and served as precinct committeeman for 20 years, trustee of Brandywine Township, Republican county chairman, director of the State School Lunch Fund, executive director of the Indiana Real Estate Commission, was a supervisor of the State Highway Dept. and the first Republican from Hancock County to be listed in “Who’s Who in American Politics.”

He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, and the Hancock Masonic Lodge #101, F&AM.

He is survived by three sons, David Nicholson of Greenfield, Joseph Nicholson of Alabama and Robert Nicholson of Greenfield; two sisters, Virginia Arnold and Valeeta Wilfong, both of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years; Julian Elizabeth (Dismore) Nicholson; and his wife Marthena (Lindsay) Nicholson whom he married in 1995.

Services were held Sunday, July 7 at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church in Greenfield wit Pastor Kenneth Vetters officiating. Committal was Monday, July 8 at Park Cemetery in Greenfield. Visitation was held Saturday, July 7 at the Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield.
