Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Irene M. Snook
Lifetime Plymouth resident, Irene M. Snook, 85, died at her residence, 11540 Lincolnway East, Plymouth, in the company of her family at 9:38 a.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2001. Irene had battled a cancer-related illness since 1996. Born in Plymouth, the daughter of George H. and Martha E. Littman Towle on July 29, 1916, she grew up in West Township and received her education at West High School. On January 4, 1936, in Culver, Ind., Irene and John V. Snook were married. John preceded her in death on June 15, 1995. For 19 years, until 1972, she and her husband were the owners and operators of the Plymouth Dairy Queen. Irene enjoyed flower gardening, shopping, visiting and working crossword puzzles. Her social life was primarily time spent with her family and her church. She was a member of the Central Church of Christ for many years. Irene is survived by two sons and a daughter. Her sons are Robert V. Snook, Lynnville, Tenn., and John E. Snook, Ft. Wayne. Her daughter is Janet L. and Ed Ousnamer, Tampa, Florida. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, together with Ida Wagoner, a sister, and Pat and Bill Kyser, a sister and brother-in-law, all of Plymouth. Several nieces and nephews survive as well. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and by Jake Snook, a great-grandson. Two sisters, Dorothy Comford and Florence Anderson and three brothers, Howard, George, and Harold Towle, have also died. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 17, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Thursday, October 18, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. Brother Byron Henbest, of Bowling Green, Ky., will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery. Preferred memorial gifts in Irene’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice.

Ray L. Snyder
Ray L. Snyder, 80, a lifetime LaPaz resident and known to many in the area as “Snyder the Decorator”, has died. Ray, who resided at 13010 W. 1st. Road, died following an illness at the home of his daughter Pam, in Bristol, Ind. Born on October 30, 1920 in Lapaz, Ind., he was the son of Solomon F. and Cacelia M. Boone Snyder. He attended Lapaz schools and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines where he received the Bronze Star. At the early age of sixteen, Ray joined his father in the painting and decorating business which he continued until his retirement in 1998. Ray was known for quality work and having a friendly disposition. On February 11, 1950, in South Bend, he and Marcia L. Hostetler, were married. Marcia died suddenly, one year ago, May 10, 2000. Ray took pride in helping others by fixing and repairing things, sometimes a challenge, but eager to try. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking and reading. A member of the Nappanee First Church of God, where he was involved in the W.H.O. ‘We Help Others’, adult Bible class. And had also served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a former member of the LaPaz First Community Church of God. He is survived by one son, Dean R. and Theresa Snyder of Defiance, Ohio, two daughters, Pam J. and Terry Garber of Bristol and Deb K. Snyder of Goshen. Eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive along with one sister and two brothers. They are, Betty and Rev. Hilton Bryant of Hammond, Roy and Lorena Snyder of Plymouth and Paul and Eyvonne Snyder of Bremen. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Ray was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Fay, a twin to son Dean, his parents, spouse and two brothers, Leo and Don Snyder. Friends may visit with the family today Tuesday, June 19, from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Johnson – Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth. Funeral services for Ray will be conducted by the Rev. Emeritus Robert Fields, of the Nappanee First Church of God and family friend Bro. Dave VanCuren. The funeral will be held in the LaPaz First Community Church of God, 601 S. Michigan St. LaPaz at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, where friends may call one hour prior services. Burial will be in Fair Cemetery, northwest of LaPaz. Military graveside services will be accorded Ray by the Lapaz American Legion Post 385. Memorial gifts in Ray’s memory may be made to the Nappanee First Church of God, LaPaz First Community Church of God or the Goshen Hospital Community Hospice Program.

Leroy R. “Lee” Sporner
Leroy R. “Lee” Sporner, 63, died of natural causes at his home, 17329 9th Rd., Plymouth, on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001. Lee had lived there since 1983, coming from German Valley, Ill. He was born on Oct. 26, 1938, in St. Mary’s, Penn., the son of Joseph A. and Emma L. Cowan Sporner. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary in Pennsylvania and in Plymouth St. Michael’s and West High School after which he joined the United States Navy. Farming was in the Sporner Blood and Lee appreciated the solitude Marshall County offered him. A dairy farmer since 1983, Lee had previously drove truck as a Teamster for Mayflower & Beacon Van Lines for over 20 years in the moving industry. He enjoyed woodworking and, was a radio Cub fan. Lee is survived by two sisters: Bernece M. Pomeroy South Bend, and Viola M. Sporner, Warsaw. A sister-in-law in Florida, Patricia A. Sporner also survives together with many nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and by six brothers: Robert, Melvin, Raymond, Kenneth, Leonard and Carl Sporner. Visitation with the family will be at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 from 12 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church of which Lee was a member, will officiate. V.F.W. Post 1162 will provide military honors at the New Oakhill Cemetery graveside. Gifts in memory of Lee may be made to the Mission 2000 of St. Michael’s Church.

Kenneth Wayne Stewart
Kenneth Wayne Stewart, 516 Pennsylvania Ave., Plymouth, died unexpectedly at 11:53 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2001, in the Emergency Room of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Wayne was 35 years old and had lived in Marshall County all of his life. He was born on November 14, 1965, in Plymouth, the son of Eugene N. Stewart, Sr. and Naomi E. Egnor Stewart. He graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1984. Wayne served his country in the United States Army and later worked as a laborer. He enjoyed following Michigan State University sports, fishing the local rivers and camping at Jellystone Park. An outdoorsman, he was always in charge of the campfire and enjoyed cooking, indoors and out. He loved being with his nieces and nephews and spending time at home. Wayne is survived by his parents, Eugene and Naomi, Plymouth and by three brothers and seven sisters. The brothers are: James L. and Sharon Stewart, Plymouth, the Rev. Arthur “Allen” and Betty Stewart, Dyersburg, Tenn., and Carl A. and Linda Stewart, Bourbon. His sisters are: Pat and Raymond Harness, Mary E. and Dennis Hostetler, Grace E. and Raymond Hummel, Betty V. Pflugshaupt and friend Doug Whiteman, Candy L. and Michael Shufelt and Samantha G. Stewart, all of Plymouth and Ellen D. and David Kaiser, Walkerton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive as well. Wayne was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene M. Stewart, Jr. and two nephews, Michael and Tony Stewart. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, November 5, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to Tuesday’s services in the church. The House of Prayer, 12450 Plymouth-Goshen Trail, where Wayne attended worship, will hold funeral services on Tuesday, November 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. Ronald Humphrey, pastor of the church, together with the Rev. Allen Stewart, brother of Wayne, will officiate. Special military graveside rites at New Oakhill Cemetery will be conducted by the VFW, #1162, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in memory of Wayne may be made to the Marshall County Hospice or the Marshall County Mental Health Association.

Ruth I. Stoneburner
Ruth I. Stoneburner, 82, Tyner, Ind., a Marshall County resident most of her married life, coming from Springfield, Missouri, died of natural causes in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, at 7:52 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001. Born in Springfield, Mo., on August 21, 1919, she was the daughter of Alfred and Laura Alice Huggard Chandler. She attended Springfield schools. She was first married to William Victor Williams who preceded her in death. On Nov. 4, 1961, in Plymouth, she was married to Henry E. Stoneburner, Sr. Henry died on Dec. 29, 1996. In 1981, after being there for over 20 years, Ruth retired from the Marshall County Parkview Hospital as the Linen Supervisor. In addition, for many years, together with Henry, she was coowner of the H& R Lamp Supply in Tyner, Ind. Ruth loved to sew and cook for her family. She was an avid flower gardener and collected Rockwell collectibles and salt and pepper shakers among many other items. She is survived by three daughters, a son and three step-sons. They are: daughters, Shirley and Richard Krull, Plymouth, Norma Rowe, Elkhart, and Carol and Wayne Pontius, Walkerton. Her son is William and Sandra Williams, LaPorte, and her step-sons are Henry E. and Leona Stoneburner, Jr., Hesperia, Mich., Richard and Carol Stoneburner and Robert L. and Linda Stoneburner, all of Plymouth. Eighteen grandchildren and numerous great-and great-great-grandchildren, together with several nieces and nephews also survive. A brother, Alfred Lee Chandler, Bradenton, Fla., and a sister, Fay Osborn, Springfield, Mo., survive as well. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, a son, Robert Williams, a grandson, Tech. Sgt. Michael Stoneburner and a granddaughter, Lisa Stoneburner. A brother and a sister have also died. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and also for one hour prior to funeral services at the church on Wednesday. Funeral services for Ruth will be held in the Sunrise Chapel, where she was a member, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001. The Rev. Bob Beyler and Pastor Rustin Krapfl will officiate. Burial will be in Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind. Memorial gifts in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Sunrise Chapel or to the Marshall County Heart Association.

Des Neiges “Denny” Swisher
Des Neiges “Denny” Swisher, 79, a Plymouth resident most of her life, died at 4:17 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2001. Denny died of natural causes at her home, 905 Berkley St., Apt. 22, Neidlinger Garden Court. She was born in Plymouth on Dec. 6, 1921, the daughter of J.R. and Agnes Nanick Klapp. She graduated from Plymouth High School with the class of 1941. On Dec. 26, 1942, in Plymouth, Denny became the bride of R. Richard Swisher. Dick died on October 13, 1996. Denny was the former co-owner of the Plymouth Office Supply. They sold the business in 1965 and moved to the Venice/Naples, Florida area, returning to Plymouth in 1983. Denny was a lady of many talents with a great sense of humor. She was a people-person, very social and helpful to family and friends. She liked to shop for antiques and enjoyed playing golf and doing arts and crafts, especially ceramics. She enjoyed bird watching and playing bridge. She was a former member of Delta Theta Tau, a philanthropic sorority and a member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. Denny is survived by four daughters, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her daughters are: Pamela J. and Dean Kennedy, Clinton, Ind., Peri J. and Arleigh Nelson, Dayton, Minn., Paula J. Swisher, South Bend and Patrice J. Swisher, Niles, Mich. A sister, Jayne Derf, of Naples, Fla., Joy Klapp, a sister-in-law of Boca Raton, Fla., and Loreen Pinney, a sister-in-law, Knox, survive as well. Denny was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse and Robert Klapp, a brother. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, July 23, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be held in the New Oakhill Chapel, Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Denny’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
