Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Maxine Thomas
Former LaPaz resident, living in Marshall County most of her lifetime, Maxine Thomas, 78, 12833 Walnut Hill Drive, Lakeville, died at 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the Nephrology Inc. unit, 6201 Nimitz Parkway, South Bend. Maxine died of an apparent stroke during dialysis. Maxine was born in LaPorte, Ind., on January 17, 1923, the daughter of Vern and Mabel Barber Dipert. She graduated from Plymouth High School in the class of 1941. On September 13, 1941, Maxine and Paul “Bill” DeVon Thomas were married in Nappanee. Paul died on June 30, 1980. Maxine had worked as the Food Service Director for the Plymouth Community School Corp. for twenty-three years. She retired in 1993. Her main hobby was reading and collecting cook books and she enjoyed trying out new recipes. She liked cooking for a large crowd and catered weddings receptions in the area. After Bill died, for many summers she cooked at the Kiwanis Crippled Children’s Camp. An active and caring person, Maxine was a member of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren and was past-president of the Plymouth Hospital Auxiliary, the Happy Homemakers and the Home Demonstration Club. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Larry Weiss of Lakeville, with whom she lived and her two grandsons and their families: Kirk and Christy Weiss and their daughters Kailyn and Kiley of Lakeville and Jeff and Donna Weiss of Indianapolis. Three sisters and two brothers also survive. The sisters, all from Plymouth, are: Betty and Carl Coplen, Marian Paton and Ruth Ann and Don Anders. Her brothers are: Paul Dipert, Avon Park, Florida, and Gail and Jan Dipert of Michigan. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Deane, Richard, Robert and Roger and an infant granddaughter. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, May 10, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Maxine will be at 11 a.m., Friday, May 11, 2001, in the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, 1130 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. The Rev. Dave Kerkove, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Maxine’s memory may be made to the Plymouth church of the Brethren.

Raymond W. Ullery
Lifetime Plymouth resident, Raymond W. Ullery, 85, died of natural causes on Thursday, August 9, 2001, at 4:08 p.m. in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born the son of Frank P., and Marjorie Ross Ullery on June 9, 1916, at home in Tyner, Ind. Raymond attended Tyner High School. On October 24, 1937, in Plymouth, Raymond and Cecile I. Markley were married. Raymond was a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren, most of those years at Plymouth. A transporter for Redman Homes Inc. of Topeka, Raymond retired in 1978 after 16 years on the road. He previously had worked for Skyline Corporation. His hobby, like his vocation, was trucks and cars. Raymond enjoyed traveling and dinner dates with his wife of nearly 64 years. That love for driving took them to most every state in the Union. He was an outdoorsman and no stranger to yard work. Raymond is survived by Cecile, his wife, their two sons, Larry W. and Barbara Ullery, Hallsville, Texas, Randy E. and Joanne Ullery, Bremen, Ind., and a daughter, Judy R. and Rod Miller, Plymouth. A grandson and three granddaughters also survive. They are: Richard and Dawn Ullery, Bremen, Melinda and Kyle Hawkins, Valparaiso and Cari Miller and Kenzie Miller, both of Plymouth. Four great-grandchildren and two sisters, Lelah Hendry of North Manchester, Ind. and Dorothy and Howard Mitchell of Rochester survive as well. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lester Ullery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, August 12, 2001, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 13, 2001, in the Plymouth Church of the Brethren with visitation one hour prior to services. The Rev. David Kerkove, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Raymond’s memory may be made to the Plymouth Church of the Brethren.

Anita A. Warner
Anita A. Warner, 83, 626 Miner St., Plymouth, died at 2:55 a.m., in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, following a brief illness, on Thursday, August 16, 2001. A resident of Plymouth since 1955, Anita had lived in California and moved east to Nebraska, St. Louis, and Illinois before making Indiana her home. Born on Oct. 30, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the daughter of George and Pauline Hunsicker Erbs. She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s Academy in St. Louis. Very active in sports, she played volleyball, softball and field hockey. She was a U.S.O. volunteer during World War II. On April 17, 1948, in Reno, Nevada, Anita and Denzil “Randy” Warner were married. Denzil died on Sept. 27, 1980. She worked alongside her spouse running the family business, Randy’s Frozen Meats, from 1955 until 1973. She then worked at Wagner Wire until her retirement in 1983. An avid walker, Anita enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. She took a lot of pride and pleasure in her family and their activities and kept up with them all. She crocheted, embroidered and tatted. She loved to read. Known and appreciated for her sense of humor, Anita also enjoyed the company of cats. She is survived by three daughters and a son. Her daughters are Janice D. and Don Kinney Jr., of Plymouth, Karla S. and Lee Krendl, Van Wert, Ohio, and Vickie Hendricks, all of Plymouth. Her son is Dan J. and Emily Warner of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are step-daughter, Elaine and Jim Hocom and step-son Steven A. and Marsha Warner, all of Freemont, Calif. Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a sister, Nell Erbs and a brother, Art Erbs, both of St. Louis, Missouri, together with several nieces and nephews, also survive. Anita was preceded in death by her spouse, three brothers and five sisters. Visitation with her family will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A rosary will be said at 1:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2001, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, where Anita was a member, 625 N. Center St., Plymouth. Father Anthony Gillespie will officiate. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Anita’s memory may be made to St. Elizabeth’s Academy, Alumnae Association, St. Louis, Missouri.

Rose M. Webb
Lifetime resident of the Marshall County area, Rose M. Webb, 3113 Quince Rd., Walkerton, where she had lived for sixty years, died after an extended illness, at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001. Rose died in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, where she had been a patient since August of 2000. She was 95 years old. Born in Plymouth on Nov. 12, 1905, Rose was the daughter of Charles W. and Mary Alice Lowery Stiles. She attended Marshall County schools. On Christmas Eve of 1941, Rose and Glenn T. Webb were married. Glenn died on May 23, 1967. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband in his farming operation. Rose loved to cook, garden and she enjoyed crocheting. She liked to fish with her family in Wisconsin. A sister, Dorothy A. Orr and a brother, Elmer M. Stiles, both of Plymouth, survive Rose’s death. Numerous nieces and nephews, including greats and great-greats, also survive. Rose was preceded in death by her parents and her spouse, two sisters; Bessie Cappus and Velva Hedges, and six brothers; Willis, Ellis, James, Robert, Arthur and Howard Stiles. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, May 21, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Following calling at 7 p.m., funeral services, officiated by her nephew, Rev. Delmas Stiles, will be held in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind. Memorials in Rose’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Cancer fund.

John Cletus White
John Cletus White, 90, a compassionate, thoughtful and well-respected man, died of natural causes at 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2001. John, who formerly lived at 16290 Pretty Lake Road, Plymouth, died in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth. Born on January 23, 1911, in Marshall County, John was the son of John A. and Inez Dreitzler White. He graduated from Argos High School with the class of 1929. On October 20, 1935, in the First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth, John and Savannah Barkley were married. Savannah preceded her husband in death on June 18, 1996. Both the Whites were very active in their church, the First Presbyterian. They served in many capacities. He was a member of the Presbyterian Session and active in church affairs for over half-a-century. John had a long and illustrious career in the dairy products business. He was associated with Schlosser Brothers, Plymouth, for 31 years as assistant General Manager, Secretary and Vicepresident of the company. For 22 years he was employed by Hawthorn Mellody, successor of Schlosser Brothers, as General Manager, President of the Indiana-Michigan Division and as Corporate Vice-president. He retired in 1980. In 1969, he served as President of the Indiana State Dairy Products Association and on the Dairy Advisory Board of the State of Indiana’s Board of Health. That same year, John went to Brazil as a member of a governmental committee commissioned to assist South American countries to develop their dairy industry. He also had served 24 years on the Board of Directors of the Bowen Center and was elected president of the board twice. John White also served seven years on the Plymouth Community School Board and held the office of president for two terms. He was Past President of the Kiwanis Club, a Past Master of the Argos Masonic Lodge and Secretary of the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. A veteran of World War II, John served in the United States Navy as a communications expert in the Pacific Theater in the spring of 1944. John is survived by two daughters and one son: Judy B Albert of Bettendorf, Iowa, Beverley J. and Richard Turner of Crawfordsville, Ind., and John B. and Nola White of Lima, Ohio. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren: John H. and Fawn Turner, Eau Claire, Wis., David W. and Sally Turner, Crawfordsville, Robert E. and Beth Turner of Waynetown, Ind., Marcia L. and Brian Kendall of Indianapolis, Ind., Savannah C. and Ron Boege of Tallahassee, Fla., John B. and Cindy White of Cedarville, Ohio and Stephen D. and Nicole White of Columbus, Ohio. Other survivors include 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Patricia Ann Turner. Two brothers, Samuel White, who died in Marshall County in 1938, and Paul White, who died in Claire, Mich. in 1976, and one sister, Bernita White Goodyear, who died in Denver, Colo., preceded him in death also. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, October 16, 2001, in the First Presbyterian Church, 401 N. Walnut Street, Plymouth. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., following visitation, by two of John’s grandsons: John B. White and Pastor Robert E. Turner. Preferred memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth, to the Marshall County Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jerry L. Wyman
Local businessman Jerry L. Wyman, 69, who lived at 10139 Queen Rd., Plymouth, for the past 26 years has died. A 12-year resident of Culver and formerly of Warsaw, Jerry died following an illness, at 10:53 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2001, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth. Jerry was born in Warsaw, Ind., on Sept. 9, 1931. He was the son of Herbert and Theresa Hubler Wyman. He graduated from Warsaw High School in the class of 1950 and, later, from insurance training school. From 1951 to 1955, he served in the United States Navy on submarine duty. He was a member of the Warsaw American Legion. On Sept. 5, 1953, in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Plymouth, Jerry and Beverly J. Ruff were married. He was employed in the insurance offices of the State Exchange Banks in Culver and Plymouth and later the Valley American Bank in Plymouth. He retired from the Morrow Insurance Agency in 1997. He loved to fish and would go anytime, to any place. An Indiana University and Notre Dame fan, he enjoyed watching their sporting events. He never got enough golf. An excellent player, Jerry played as often as he could and was a valued member of the Plymouth Country Club. He often walked the course outside his door, barefooted. “I love the feel of the grass and the earth on my feet, ” he said. “ It is a communion with nature.” He attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church and was a member of that faith for over 44 years. He also was a member of the Plymouth Kilwinning Masonic Lodge. A man of strong convictions, Jerry served the community in many ways and was a stalwart supporter of many worthwhile organizations, serving on their boards and committees. Jerry is survived by his wife, Bev, and by a daughter, Kimberly K. Miller and by a son, Thad W. Wyman, all of Plymouth. A granddaughter, Courtney and Lauran Herrimann, also survives. Two brothers, Tom Wyman, Warsaw, and William Wyman, North Providence, R.I., Loretta Ruff, his mother-in-law and several nieces and nephews survive as well. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and by Sally Wyman, a sister. A Memorial Mass to honor Jerry’s life will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2001, in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 412 N. Center St., Plymouth. Father John Schramm, pastor of St. Thomas, will officiate. Immediately following the Mass a reception for family and friends will be held in Bishop Sheridan Hall adjacent to the church. Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Jerry’s memory may be made to the Boys & Girls Club or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
