Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

Loreitta M. “Rita” Beatty
Loreitta M. “Rita” Beatty, 66, lost her five-year battle with cancer at 1:50 a.m. on Friday, October 5, 2001. Rita died in Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home. A former resident of Clark Ave., she made her residence with her son David at 11779 9th Rd., Plymouth. She was born on April 8, 1935, in Guthrie, Minn., the daughter of Lawrence E. and Esther Schooley Guise. As a child her family lived in various northern Indiana communities before calling Plymouth their home. On May 28, 1956, in Tyner, Ind., Rita and Norman W. Beatty were married. Norman died on April 12, 2000. As a Certified Nurses Aide, Rita worked at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home for over 20-years, and with other area nursing homes as well. She was first and foremost a full-time mother to her nine children. She enjoyed flower gardening, embroidery, crocheting and giving wise and sage advice to her family. Rita is survived by five sons and four daughters. Her sons are: Michael W. and Shelley Beatty, Argos, David A. Beatty, Ronald E. and Cheryl Beatty, Larry N. Beatty and James E. Beatty, all of Plymouth. Her daughters are: Evelyn J. and Steve Froeschke and Rhonda L. Sneed, all of Plymouth, Kathy S. Beatty, Argos, and Teresa A. and Jack Huffer, LaPaz. Twenty-four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive, together with four sisters and a brother. Her sisters are: Zella and Dale Mangun, Culver, Barbara Carey, Inwood, Pat and Earl Wright, South Bend and Betty Green, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Eugene “Butch” Guise, of Rochester, her brother, also survives. Rita was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2001, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. David Kerchove, pastor of the Plymouth Church of the Brethren, will follow visitation at 2 p.m. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Rita’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Hospice or the Marshall County Cancer Association.

Robert L. “Bob” Berger
Lifetime Marshall County resident, Robert L. “Bob” Berger, 63, was diagnosed with a cancer related illness in the spring of 2001. Bob died at home in the loving care of his family and the Marshall County Hospice at 8:35 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2001. He died at 7439 Jarrah Road, Plymouth, in the home once belonging to his late grandmother, Clara Berger, where he and his wife have resided for the past 15 years. It has been a family homestead for over 100 years. Bob was born in Bourbon, Ind. on October 19, 1938, the son of Paul Alfred and Dorothy Ritchey Berger. He was raised in Bourbon Township and graduated from Bourbon High School with the class of 1956. He entered Radiology training at Memorial Hospital and later, St. Joseph’s Hospital; he received his continuing education in such places as New York and Texas. In August of 1956, until October of 1959, Bob served in the United States Army: two years were spent overseas in Germany. Esther F. Warren became his bride on August 24, 1957. The couple was married in the United Methodist Church of Bourbon by the Rev. Ross Ritchey. For nearly 38 years Bob was a Radiology Technologist with St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend. He retired in October of 1999. He then worked for 1 1/2 years with Titus, Inc. For 15 of those years, he had also farmed. Known as “Happy Bob, ” he was a man of many interests. He liked fishing in the local lakes. In the year 2000, he and his wife, Esther, caught over 500 fish in Cook Lake alone. Being a nature lover, he also enjoyed deer and squirrel hunting. He liked most sports for many years and was a Green Bay Packer football and an Indiana University basketball fan. In earlier years he coached and umpired Little League baseball. Raised in the United Methodist Church of Bourbon, Bob was a joyful member of the Inwood United Methodist Church. He was a soloist and sang in the “Willing Singers” Choir of the church. He served on the Pastor/Parish Committee and could be counted on to help with all things regarding his church. During his treatment in the cancer unit, he was “just Bob.” Despite his own illness, He worked at making things more pleasant for other patients, lifting their spirits and making them smile. Bob is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Esther, and by their three sons and their families : Paul A. and Debbie Berger, and their children, Brandon, Phillip and Bryan, Plymouth; Robert D. Berger, Plymouth; and James D. and Debbie Berger and their children: Kyle, Jimmy, Emily, Jacob, all of Argos. Also surviving is his step-mother, Mary Berger, of Bourbon, a sister, Carol and Carl Butgeriet, Churubusco, Ind., and two brothers: Mike and Linda Berger, Warsaw and Kris and Kim Berger, Bourbon. Bob was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. P. Michael Dixon, pastor of the Inwood United Methodist Church will officiate. The VFW Post 1162 will conduct graveside services at the Parks Cemetery, Bourbon. Memorial gifts may be made in Bob’s memory to the Inwood United Methodist Church "New Building Fund, ” to Marshall County Hospice or to the St. Joseph Cancer Center.

Henry C. Bollhoefer
Henry C. “Hank” Bollhoefer, 75, 4821 French St., Tyner, Ind., an area resident since he was discharged from the Marines, has died. Hank passed away in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, at 2:34 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001. Born the son of Mark Lester and Pearl L. McDaniel Bollhoefer on May 5, 1926, in Huntington County, Ind., Hank attended Jefferson High School in Huntington. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Southwest Pacific during World War II until February of 1946. On Sept. 14, 1947, in Argos, Hank and Virginia Jean Grossman were married. Hank was a self-employed mechanic for 33 years, from 1960 to 1993. He had also worked for eight years as a John Deere mechanic for James Morrissey. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking and was a collector of miniature John Deere tractors. A member of the Blissville Church of the Brethren, Hank had served on the Tyner Volunteer Fire Department. He was a Marshall County 4-H leader for a number of years and a member of the Marshall County Fair Board, serving as president in 1978. Hank is survived by Virginia, his wife of nearly 54 years, a daughter, a son and their families. His daughter is Linda and her husband, Douglas Cannan, Brandon, Florida. His son and daughter-in-law is David and Emilia Bollhoefer, Tyner, Ind. Five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild, also survive together with a brother, Phillip and Ardille Bollhoefer, Rancho Cordova, Calif., and a sister; Alta Keifer, Huntington, Ind. A step-sister and step-brother, both living in Texas, survive as well; they are Nina and Reever Morris and Harold Reding. Hank was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Margaret Decker, three brothers and two sisters. Friends may call on the family on Monday, June 4, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Funeral services for Hank will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, 6250 Spruce Trail, Plymouth. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the Blissville Church, will officiate. A military service, conducted by the Plymouth V.F.W., Post 1162, will honor Hank at the graveside in Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind. Memorials in Hank’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Virginia J. Bollhoefer
Virginia J. Bollhoefer, 71, of 4821 French St., Tyner, Ind., died at 5:56 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Virginia, a Marshall County resident all of her life, died in Pilgrim Manor, Plymouth, following a brief illness. She was born in Argos, the daughter of Lott E. and Corene Hagenbush Grossman on Oct. 22, 1929, and was a 1947 graduate of Argos High School. On September 14, 1947, in Argos, Virginia and Henry C. Bollhoefer were married. Henry died less than two months ago, on May 31, 2001. Virginia had been a bus driver for John Glenn schools for 23 years. She also had worked in the kitchen at Swan Lake Golf Club for 13 years. She worked with her husband, Hank, in his repair business as well. Active in the Marshall County 4-H program, she was a leader for over 32 years and a 40 year member of the Home Extension club. She was a member for over two decades of both the Polk Township’s Fireman’s Auxiliary and the Walkerton Community Pantry. She liked to crochet and was an avid gardener. Virginia enjoyed canning the vegetables she grew and showing her flowers. She also liked to walk and did some hiking. Virginia is survived by a daughter, Linda and Douglas Cannan, Brandon, Fla., and a son, David and Emilia Bollhoefer, Tyner, Ind. Five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild also survive. In addition two sisters, Leona and Jerome Young, Niles, Mich., and Donna and Robert Loop, LaPorte, Ind., survive, together with three brothers: LeRoy and Donnabelle Grossman, Talma, Ind., Lowell and Bonnie Grossman and Merle and Dorothy Grossman, all of Argos, Ind. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Hank, a daughter, Margaret Decker, four brothers and one sister. Visitation with the family will be at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, on Friday, July 27, 2001, from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2001, in the Blissville Church of the Brethren, 6250 Spruce Trail, Plymouth, where Virginia was a member for more than 40 years. The Rev. Jimmy Baker, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Tyner Cemetery, Tyner, Ind. Memorial gifts in Virginia’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Cancer Association or the Blissville Church of the Brethren.

Gerald D. "Blondie" Bonnell
Gerald D. “Blondie” Bonnell, 79, 905 E. Berkley St., Plymouth, Ind., formerly of Star City and Culver, Ind., died of natural causes in Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001. Born in Pulaski County, Ind., the son of Serin and Bertha Irene Marvin Bonnell, on Oct. 7, 1922, Blondie attended Fairview School in Pulaski County. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Culver Veterans of Foreign Wars. On March 15, 1946, in Rochester, Ind., Blondie and Dolly A. Nitzschke were married. He was a self-employed building contractor, an avid fisherman and enjoyed and followed all Notre Dame sports. In addition to Dolly, his wife of 55 years, Blondie is survived by a daughter and son and their spouses. They are: Patricia Ann and Gary Rogers, Rochester, Ind., and Steven Paul and Linda Bonnell, Brandon, Fla. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive together with a brother, Arnold and Florine Bonnell, Mishawaka, Ind. Blondie was preceded in death by his parents, two sons: Dennis Jay and Gerald Lee Bonnell and three brothers: Kenneth, Cecil, and Keith Bonnell and two sisters, Sylvia Balder and Marge Killenberger. Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, are handling the arrangements. There will be no visitation and no services. Burial will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind. Memorials in Blondie’s memory may be made to the Marshall County Cancer Society.

Thelma Burns Collins
Funeral services for lifelong Plymouth resident, Thelma Burns Collins, 95, will be on Monday, July 2, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Grand nephew, Mike Burroughs, will conduct the service. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, July 1, 2001, from 3 to 7 p.m., after which an Eastern Star Service will be held in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Thelma, who resided 6785 N. Michigan Rd., Plymouth, died of natural causes at 7:10 a.m. on Friday, June 29, 2001, in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth. She was born in Plymouth on September 10, 1905, the daughter of Elmer G. and Mary Louella Ebel Burns. She attended Plymouth High School. On October 19, 1956, in Plymouth, at the E.U.B (Trinity United Methodist Church) Thelma and George Collins, the owner of a hearing aid company in town, were married. George died on January 4, 1976. For 35 years, Thelma was office manager of the Security Loan Company, now AVCO Finance, retiring in 1970. Serving people was her joy. A devoted lifetime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and a dedicated member of the Band of Hope class. She was a 50-year active member and a past Worthy Matron and office holder in all positions of the Eastern Star, Judy Grover Chapter #26. Thelma was also active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling and crochet. She did her own yard work and, remained active during her senior years. Thelma is survived by four nieces and a nephew. They are: Joan and Wallace Whitcomb, Bunker Hill, Ind., Richard and Marilyn Shreve, Huntington, W. Va., Mary Sue and Willis Burroughs, Argos, Betty Lou and Mearl Yockey, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Peggy and Dell Fast, Roanoke, Texas. Other survivors include several great-nieces and nephews, step-children and their families. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters, Helen Hatfield and Gladys Shreve and Ford Burns, a brother. Burial will take place in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Thelma’s memory may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church’s Elevator and Handicap Entry Fund.
