Indiana Marriages, 1780-1992

H. Ruth Couts
H. Ruth Couts, 95, a Plymouth resident most of her life, died of natural causes at 11:18 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2001. Ruth died in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Center, 222 Parkview St., Plymouth. She was born in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of Albert and Charity Shaw Cain, on June 3, 1906. She graduated from Howe High School in 1925. She was first married to Chet Taber who preceded her in death. Her second husband was Loren Couts who also died. Melvin Couts who she married on Sept. 29, 1971, in Kankakee, Ill., died on April 29, 1999. Ruth had worked at John Meck Industries in Plymouth and later at Heister’s Grocery for a number of years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. She belonged to a pinochle club for over fifty years. Ruth is survived by Alice Rankin, a sister, of Plymouth, and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and three sisters: Ethel Weber, Maude Sharpe and Mary Bollman. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. Memorial services will be held following visitation at 11:30 in the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. David Moffett-Moore, pastor of the Plymouth First United Church of Christ of which Ruth was a member, will officiate. Interment will be in New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth, Ind. Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Church of Christ.

Marshall Alexander Craig
Marshall Alexander Craig, 84, 2313 Benham Ave., Elkhart, Ind., a Marshall and Elkhart County resident all of his life, died, following an illness, at 7:07 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2001. Marshall died in the Rosewood Terrace Nursing Home, Elkhart. Born on November 24, 1917, in Plymouth, Marshall was the son of Frank and Eliza Annabelle Greer Craig. He was a 1936 graduate of Lincoln High School, Plymouth and attended various technical schools. During World War II, Marshall was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Plymouth V.F.W., and the American Legion. In January, 1943, in Indianapolis, Ind., Marshall and Ellamae Ennis were married. Ellamae died in Nov. 1961. In Dec. of 1968, in Elkhart, he and Loretta Zimmer Gang were wed. Marshall retired on April 1, 1984, after 44 years with the McCords Corp. in Plymouth where he had worked in the Service Plate and Layout departments. He was a member of the Plymouth Moose, Lodge and of a gun club in Elkhart. An amateur ham radio operator, his call letters were “K9MSP.” He had been a private pilot since the late 1940s and was a member of the Mishawaka Pilots club. Marshall is survived by his wife, Loretta of Elkhart, and by two daughters. The daughters are Julie Floyd and friend Warren Moore, Tampa, Fla., and Charlotte and Phillip Fifer, Sr., Riverview, Fla. A granddaughter, Kay Graf, Riverview, Fla., and a grandson, Phillip and Jean Fifer, Jr., Hanover, Md., together with four great-grandsons also survive. A step-daughter, Shirley and Roger Rhodes, Ft. Wayne, Ind., and a step-son, Robert and Alice Gang, Dewey, Ariz., survive as well. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Ellamae, two brothers and two sisters. There will be no visitation. Memorial services in the New Oakhill Chapel, Plymouth, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2001. The Rev. Mark Kloess, pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, will officiate. The Plymouth V.F.W. Post 1162 will give full military graveside honors at Oakhill Cemetery in Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Marshall’s name may be made to the Plymouth V.F.W. Post 1162 or the Elkhart County Hospice.

Mildred Cramer
Mildred Cramer, a lifetime area resident, living on Lilac Rd., for 44 years, then in Garden Courts East and the last year at Miller’s Merry Manor, 600 Oakhill Ave., died of natural causes at the Manor at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001. Mildred was 93 years old. She was born in Linkville, Indiana on July 7, 1908, the daughter of Elmer E. and Estella A. Michael Reese. She attended Shiloh and Linkville schools. On March 12, 1927, in Plymouth, Mildred and Charles D. Cramer were married. Charles died on March 18, 1979. A homemaker, Mildred assisted her husband on the farm. She also worked in the LaPaz school cafeteria for 15 years. She loved cooking and was known for her fantastic pies. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, canning and gardening. Family reunion dinners were prime times for her and her husband. An active member of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church she was a member of the Helpful Hour and a former Sunday School teacher. Mildred is survived by three sons. They and their wives are: Kenneth D. and Margaret Cramer, Glendale, Arizona and Ross L. and Marilyn Cramer and C. Larry and Patricia A. Cramer, all of Plymouth. Fifteen grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, together with two sisters-in-law, Lois Guard, Bremen and Dorothy Reese, Plymouth, several nieces and nephews, also survive. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, three brothers, David, Noble and Raymond Reese and four sisters: Vera Marks, Lula Marks, Marie Winrotte and Ruth Baumgartner. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, and for one hour prior to the funeral in the church on Friday. Funeral services on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, will be at 11 a.m. in the Plymouth Wesleyan Church. A grandson, Rev. Mike Cramer, pastor of the New Life Baptist Church, Mishawaka, and Pastor Bob Vardaman, the seniors pastor of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the New Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Mildred’s memory may be made to the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.

Lawrence Ladd Culbertson
Lawrence Ladd Culbertson, died of natural causes at 12:20 p.m., Saturday, December 22, 2001 in the Michigan Masonic Home, Alma, Michigan; where he had resided since March of 1999. Larry was born the son of Lewis H. and LeNora Belle Greene Culbertson, on December 9, 1910 in Marion, Indiana. Raised in Marion, he was a 1928 graduate of Marion High School. On December 2, 1956 in Burr Oak, Indiana, Larry married the former Olive A. (Lee) Burkett. She survives and resides at the Masonic Home in Alma. Larry and his wife co-owned and operated the Culbertson Market in Baldwin, Michigan from 1960 to 1977. There he was a Past President of the Baldwin Rotary Club, and the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, also having served as a Lake County Commissioner. He held membership in the Baldwin Eastern Star and was a life member of the Masonic Lodge of Cassopolis, Michigan. He had been a former employee of the South Bend Bendix Corporation for 17 years. For many years the Culbertson’s resided in Culver and South Bend, Indiana. Survivors include his wife Olive, a daughter, Starr and her husband Joseph Kachoris of Niles, Michigan and a son, Lawrence L. and his wife Jennifer of Spring Lake, Michigan. Eight grandchildren and six great-grand children also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold E. and William L. Culbertson. As were his wishes, there will be no services or visitation, cremation will take place and his ashes returned to the Baldwin area he so loved. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Michigan Masonic Home, 1268 Masonic St. Alma, Michigan 48801.

Rosemary “Rosie” Delaney
Rosemary “Rosie” Delaney, 86, a nearly 50-year resident of Shady Rest, living since May 21, 1996, in the Walnut Creek Nursing Home, 309 Kingston Rd., Plymouth, has died. Rosie, remembered as “a little angel, beloved by everyone,” had been in failing health for the past six months. She died at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2001. Never married, Rosie was born on July 2, 1915, in Detroit, Mich. She was the daughter of William and Mable Donovan Delaney. Her father was a railroad man and when he died she came to Shady Rest. She helped to feed, bathe and assist the older people at the Home. For many years, the petite little lady worked in the kitchen of Shady Rest. She loved Shady Rest and her fellow residents often expressing concern for its’ future. “I used to get up at 5 a.m.” she said in an interview in 1990, “to start cooking. Everybody like my cooking and I sure like everybody here.” At Shady Rest, she picked strawberries, hoed the garden, milked cows and made her own cottage cheese and butter. She remembered carrying water for resident’s showers and baths in big marble bowls. When Mrs. Harold Kruger, a past administrator of the Home, organized a trip to the Holy Land, Rosie, who had never been anywhere....went.” She had a wonderful time. Later she visited England, Scotland and Ireland. She loved to visit with folks and to show-off her collection of angel and cat figurines. She was especially fond of cats. She loved to attend Mass at St. Michael’s, and have lunch with the Harvest House group. Rosie enjoyed summer retreats at Ancilla Domini, and was a member of Christian Women. Rosie is survived by a nephew, Michael Pavack of Crestwood, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Denise Kusk and Marie Howard and a step-sister, Myrtle Kirkwood. Friends may pay their last respects to Rosie from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church of which she was a devoted member, will be on Friday, May 25, 2001, at 11 a.m. Father Anthony Gillespie, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Plymouth. Memorial gifts in Rosie’s memory may be made to the St. Michael's Mission 2000.

Flossie I. Denney
Eighty-eight year old Flossie I. Denney, affectionately called Penny by her spouse, died, following an illness, at 10:03 p.m., on Sunday, June 17, 2001. Flossie who lived at 308 E. Plum St., Argos, died in the Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home, Plymouth, where she had been a resident for one year. She was born on January 11, 1913, in Plymouth, the daughter of George Jackson Yeazel and Nancy Loretta Harrell Yeazel. She attended Plymouth schools. On August 15, 1934, in Plymouth, Flossie and Robert Eugene Denney were married. Robert died on Sept. 12, 1978. A homemaker, she was a former employee of Ball Band in Mishawaka. She loved to babysit her grandchildren and a neighborhood child from time to time. She was active and involved in kitchen duties and was known as a good cook and bread baker. A person of many diverse interests and tastes Flossie loved animals, especially cats. She took an interest in crafts, liked to dance and was involved in Real Meal activities. She enjoyed all kinds of gardening: flowers, strawberries and fruit trees. Flossie was a former member of the Plymouth Chapter 1355 of the Women of the Moose. She is survived by three sons and a daughter. They are Gerald “Tony” and his wife, Susie Denney, Roger D. and his wife, Pam Denney and Patsy L. Fretz, all of Argos. A third son and daughter-in-law, David B. and Beth Denney, live in New Haven, Ind. Eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren survive as well. Flossie was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, a great-grandson, Guy Anthony Jacobson, two brothers, Victor and Dale Yeazel and three sisters: Fern Lyons, Cora Denney and Joy Yeazel. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, Ind. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2001, in the funeral home and will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Klatt, retired pastor of the Argos Wesleyan Methodist Church of which Flossie had attended. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos. Memorial gifts may be made the Cancer, Alzheimer’s or Diabetes Association.
