Ray Franklin Tichenor, 84

Ray Franklin Tichenor, 84, of Connersville, died Tuesday at Fayette Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Greensburg, the son of the late Elmer and Cora (Morris) Tichenor.

He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1939. He served in the Army as a truck driver in World War II, in Northern France in Normandy during the Battle of the Bulge. He finished his years of service as a medic.

He was a member of the VFW Post 47043 in Vevay and of the Sand Creek Baptist Church.

Ray retired from Ford Electronics in 1986, after 42 years of service. At Ford, he was known as “9-High.”

On Christmas Day, 1945, in Greensburg, he married Cleo Cole Tichenor.

She survives, with children Ingrid Tichenor of Angola and Julia Tichenor of Connersville and Phillip W. Cole of Madison, Wis.; a sister, Mary Lou Samples of Indianapolis; grandchildren Rhianna Rose of Brookville and Daniel Rose of Angola; great-grandson Waylan Wagner of Brookville and several nieces and nephews.

A sister also preceded him in death.

Visitation is Sunday, 4-8 p.m., at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Thompson Brown Chapel, Connersville. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, Rev. Larry Spoores officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Fayette County Color Guard.

Gladys Swinford

Gladys Swinford, 93, of Waldron Health Care Home, died at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

She was born on March 4, 1911, in Shelby County, the daughter of Conard and Eupha (Thompson) Goodwin.

She was a member of the Order of the Waldron Eastern Star, of the former Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, south of St. Paul, and was a former member of the Noble Township Home Extension Club.

On Dec. 16, 1933, she married George Swinford. He died on April 23, 1981.

She was also predeceased by a brother, Donald Good-win.

Gladys is survived by daughters Phyllis (Gene) Weaver of Waldron, Kay (James) Pashley of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Marjorie (Claude) Smith of Waldron, a grandson; two great-grandchildren; a step-grandchild and five step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday in the Glenn E. George Funeral Home, St. Paul. Eastern Star Services will take place at 8 p.m. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, Rev. Mark Dodd and Rev. Darrell Gressel officiating. Burial will be in Van Pelt Cemetery, Shelby County. Memorials may be made to Hospice of East Central Indiana.

Carroll “Wig” Knarr, 87

Carroll “Wig” Knarr, 87, of Greensburg, died Sunday, at 9:05 a.m. at Hospice Center of South Central Indiana at Columbus

Carroll was born Jan. 29, 1917 in Westport, the son of the late George and Jessie (House) Knarr.

Carroll was a lifelong resident of Decatur County. He graduated from Letts High School in 1935. He had served with the Army Air Corps during World War II with 37 months of overseas duty and was a retired farmer. He served as a County Commissioner from 1969 until 1976. Carroll had also served as President of Indiana Association of Counties and was appointed by Gov. Otis Bowen to HERPIC Board of Purdue University. He was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Greensburg and Greensburg Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post.

He was married to Ruth Bare in Laurel, on Sept. 5, 1948. She survives, with children Danny (Linda) Knarr of Westport, Janice Kroger of Columbus, Nancy (Terry) Steed of Westport and Kay (Rick) Nobbe of Greensburg, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by brothers Donnel Knarr, Burney Knarr, Ervin Knarr and Willis Knarr and a sister, Margery Knarr.

Visitation is Tuesday, 3-8 p.m. in Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport Services will be Wednesday, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Steve Malone and Rev. Colleen Lucas officiating. Burial will take place at Aerie Cemetery at Letts.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Research, Hospice Center of South Central Indiana or the Westport Volunteer Fire Department through the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home.

Maj. Jack Dewitt Kessler, 72

Maj. Jack Dewitt Kessler, 72, of Greensburg, died Nov. 16th in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Jack was born on Dec., 22, 1931 in Lansing, MI, the son of the late Donald and Marion Kessler.

Jack served in the Navy and Air Force from 1950 to 1971 and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Air Medal and other awards. He was the owner/broker of White Sands Realty and a member of the Emerald Coast Boards of Realtors for over 30 years. He was a member of the Lions Club (32 years) and the Elks Lodge (19 years), holding a number of positions in both throughout the years. He was a life member of the FWB VFW Post 7674 and 51-year member of the American Legion Post 129 in Greens-burg. He also preceded in death by a son, Jack D. Kessler II.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Faith; sons, Donald Kessler of Tuscon and David Kessler of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Jackie Kessler-Russell of Summit, Miss.; grandsons, Thaddeus Ransom Russell and David Dewitt Kessler; step-granddaughters, Lauren and Christina Russell; one brother, James E. Kessler of Columbus, IN; and sisters, Jane Davis, Mary Ellen Green and Doris Fosbinder all of Greensburg.

Funeral services will be arranged by McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Burial will be held with full military honors at Barrancas National Military Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to either the FWB Lions Club, P.O. Box 844, FWB, FL 32549 or the FWB Elks Lodge No. 1795, P.O. Box 535, FWB, FL 32549.

Etta Belle Fisk, 97

Etta Belle Fisk, 97, died Friday in her Batesville home.

Visitation is today, 5-7 p.m., in Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville.

Services are Tuesday, 11 a.m. in Wilmington Baptist Church, Fiskburg, Ky.

Burial will be in Fiskburg.

Magdalene E. Riehle, 88

Magdalene E. Riehle, 88, Morris, died Thursday.

Visitation is Tuesday. 4-7 p.m., in the Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Church.

William Russell Griner, 95

William Russell Griner, 95, of Napoleon, died Monday at Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehab Center in Vevay.

He was born Aug. 10, 1909, to the late William Amos and Anna Belle Kline Griner.

He was a custodian in the Columbus School System in the late 1950s and later moved to Florida where he and his wife ran a trailer court and he also did painting in the general area. His last year was spent in Napoleon, where he and his wife owned and operated greenhouses and he continued to paint. He was also a member of St. Peter’s UCC Church Finks.

He was married to Emma Lena Wienberg on Nov. 24, 1932 in Osgood. She survives with children Laura Ann Miller of Greensburg and Mary Lou Dunbar of Madison; grandchildren Don Miller of Greensburg, Denise Miller of Washington, Ron Dunbar of Atlanta and Tamara Schorder of Denver; and nine great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Raymond Griner; and sisters Esther Marie Wells and Pauline Meese.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Thursday in Neal’s Funeral Home in Osgood. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Osgood.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Building Fund or Cemetery.

Mervin V. Baker, 84

Mervin V. Baker, 84, died Friday in Heritage House Nursing Home, Shelbyville.

He was born on Sept. 5, 1920, the daughter of the late Cecil Baker and Carrie Ponsler.

Mervin worked for KCL for 40 years, retiring in sales in 1983. He was a member of West Street United Methodist Church for 50 years. He was in the choir for 50 years.

He was also predeceased by a son, Duane Baker; and brothers Dale Baker and Morris Baker.

He married Barbara Marlow on Jan. 24, 1948. She survives, with a daughter, Jane (Allen) McCain of St. Paul, grandchildren Leigh (Jeff) Larrison, Lydsay (Kevin) Gettinger, Carri Baker, Sheri Baker; great-grandchildren, Caroline Larrison, Audrey Larrison and Evan Larrison; and sisters Mable Tarplee and Iris Deiwert of Greensburg.

Visitation is today, 4-8 p.m. in Murphy-Parks Funeral Chapel, Shelbyville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m., in the funeral chapel, Rev. Randall Slaven officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill.

Memorials may be given to the church, care of the funeral home.
