David ‘Pete’ Purnell

David Eugene “Pete” Purnell, age 66, of Vevay, passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 15th, 2018, at his daughter’s residence in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Pete entered this life on February 19th, 1952, in Switzerland County, the son of the late Eddie B. and Jean Marie (Hall) Purnell. He was raised in Switzerland County, where he was a 1970 graduate of Switzerland County High School.

Pete was inducted into the United States Army on October 22nd, 1970 at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on July 24th, 1973 at Fort Benjamin in Harrison, Indiana. Pete was then inducted into the United States Army National Guard on May 16th, 1986, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant on May 15, 1987.

Pete was employed as a truck driver for various companies for several years. He also farmed on the family farm for several years in Switzerland County. Pete was a member of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396. He will be remembered for his love of fishing, socializing with his family and friends, cooking and tinkering on cars and motorcycles.

Pete will be deeply missed by his children, Sherry Jones and her husband Van of Indianapolis, Indiana, Charles Purnell of Indianapolis, Indiana, Preston Purnell of Florence, Kentucky, Blake Purnell and his companion, Kathie Morling of Florence, Indiana, Destiny Purnell and her companion, Joe Hall of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Justin Purnell and his wife, Vanessa of Florence, Indiana; and by his several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will also be greatly missed by his brother, Eddie Carroll Purnell of Columbus, Indiana; by his sisters: Mary L. Heath and her husband Gary of Madison and Judy L. Ritch and her husband David of Tupelo, Mississippi; and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Eddie B. Purnell, who died on March 14th, 2010, and Jean Marie (Hall) Purnell, who died on February 15th, 2008; by his sister, Patricia Ann “Trisha” Purnell, who died on June 18th, 2017; by his sister-in-law, Bonnie Purnell, who died on November 26th, 2015; and his best friend, Rick L. McKenzie, who died on August 1st, 2010.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 20th, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, December 20th, at 1 p.m., by Reverend Mike Jones at the funeral home.

Interment and full military rites will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vevay American Legion Post #185 or Vevay VFW Post #5396. Cards are available at the funeral home.

Marshall Alford, Jr.

Marshall McKinley Alford, Jr., 72, of Moores Hill, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 18th.

Marshall was born and raised in Ohio County, Indiana, and attended Rising Sun High School.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Markland Funeral Home, Rising Sun, Indiana.

Krissie Lynn Hill

Krissie Lynn May Hill, 34, of Aurora, Indiana, passed away at 2:23 p.m. on Saturday, August 8th, 2015 at University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Krissie was born in Dearborn County, Indiana on January 15th, 1981, the daughter of the late Carolyn Sue (Taylor) Peelman. Krissie attended school in Switzerland County. She worked as a CNA at The Waters of Rising Sun.

She was the wife of Gary Dean Hill, II. Krissie and Gary were married in October of 2007. Krissie was a loving wife and devoted mother, her life revolved around her children.

In addition to her caring husband Gary, Krissie is also survived by four sons: Gary Hill, III; Austin McDaniel; Timmy Hill; and Peyton Hill. She is also survived by her sisters: Felicia Taylor, Myla Hunter, Jorden Gilbert and Jill Hunter; a brother: Jay Taylor; by her aunt, Trish Lozier; and uncles Norman and Robert Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her mother Carolyn Sue Peelman, her stepfather John Hunter and her grandparents Norman and Edna Taylor.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 13th at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Visitation was held prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the family.

Kathleen Cole

Kathleen (Shoemaker) Cole, age 93, of Fairview, Indiana, died at 8:41 p.m. on Monday, August 17th, 2015, at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Kathleen entered this life on October 15th, 1921, the daughter of the late Clarence Olin and Lula (Medley) Shoemaker. At the age of five, Kathleen and her family moved to Russiaville, Indiana, where she graduated in 1939 from the Russiaville High School.

In her early years of life, she enjoyed taking music lessons for 12 years and became an accomplished violist and pianist. After graduating high school, Kathleen was awarded the musical scholarship to the Juilliard School. In 1939, Kathleen moved to Kokomo, Indiana where she enrolled at the Indiana Business School where she attended for a year and a half.

Kathleen was united in marriage on August 14th, 1940 in Kokomo, Indiana, to Alvin Harvey Cole, and to this union arrived two daughters: Karen and Sherry; and two sons: David and Rick, to bless their home. Kathleen and Alvin shared 75 loving years of marriage together until her death.

Kathleen was a former long distance operator for Indiana Bell in Kokomo, Indiana, from 1949 to 1952. Kathleen was a former Deputy Auditor for Switzerland County, from 1959 to 1963; and she was a former employee of the ASCS Office in Switzerland County from 1964 to 1984. Kathleen and Alvin prepared taxes with their son, Rick for the Comprehensive Tax Service in Kokomo, Indiana, from 1991 to 2009.

For several years, Kathleen played the violin in a trio for an Indianapolis radio station. Kathleen was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Fairview, where she took the pleasure in playing the piano for many years. Kathleen will be remembered for her love of playing music, especially the piano and violin, reading books and her artistic talent in pastel painting. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

Kathleen will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 75 years: Alvin Harvey Cole of Fairview; her daughters: Karen Kelleher and her husband Paul of Sellersburg, Indiana; and Sherry Courtney and her husband Gerald of Mesa, Arizona; by her sons: David Cole and his wife: Renee of Rising Sun; and Rick Cole of Kokomo, Indiana.

She will also be missed by her grandchildren: Randy, Lisa, Angie, Sean, Devin, Erin, Megan, Patrick, Maddie and Alisha; by her great-grandchildren: Laura, Joseph, Chris, Trevor, Nicole, Colton, Dillon, Davian, Isabella, Jackson, Ella and Max; and by her great-great-grandchildren: Aydn, Thor and Luna. She will be missed by her sisters-in-law: Marcella Cole of Fairview and Wilma Cole of Fairview; by her brother-in-law: Carroll Scudder of Vevay; and her numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Clarence Olin and Lula (Medley) Shoemaker; her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Harvey Elmer "Hub" and Nellie May (Newkirk) Cole; her granddaughter: Michelle Courtney; her grandson-in-law: John Knight; her brother: Max Shoemaker; her sisters: Jean Foreman and Eileen Barnhill; her sisters-in-law: Pearl Byram, Mavis Scudder, Leo Gulley, Arlena Brown, Hazel Wiley and Goldie Hebel; and her brothers-in-law: Dilver Cole, Hilbert Cole, Raymond Cole, Donald Cole, Wilfred Cole and Emerson Cole.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015, at 11 a.m., by Pastor Cory Potts at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery.

Friends may call 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 21st, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairview United Methodist Church. Cards are available at the funeral home.

Russell McSwain

Russell David McSwain, age 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Switzerland County, passed away with his loving family at his side and joined his beloved son, Kevin at 5:50 a.m., on Sunday, August 16th, 2015, at his residence.

Russell entered this life on January 1st, 1932, in Patriot, the loving son of the late, Emerson G. and Edna G. (Garard) McSwain. He was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1949 graduate of the Patriot High School.

Russell was inducted into the United States Army on September 25th, 1952 at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant on June 24th, 1954 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Russell was united in marriage on July 24th, 1954 at the Concord Community Church in Patriot, to Vera Marie Schroeder, and to this union arrived two sons: Kevin and Brian to bless their home. Russell and Vera shared 61 loving years of marriage together until his death.

Russell worked for Danbury Appliance in Rising Sun before beginning his career with the U.S. Shoe Corporation (Nine West). He was a former Industrial Engineer for a majority of his U.S. Shoe career, serving the Vevay, Madison and Osgood, Indiana factories. He retired after 41 years of service as the Florence, Indiana dye shop plant manager.

Russell was a founding board member of the Community Foundation of Switzerland County, where he and his family established the Kevin W. McSwain Memorial Fund for the Pacer Band after Kevin suddenly passed away at the age of 25 on March 12th, 1989. Russell was a founding member of the Swiss Wine Festival Committee and was Co-Chairman with Mike Danner. Russell and Vera resided all of their lives in the Switzerland County community until moving in 2008 to the Indianapolis community to be near their son and grandchildren.

Russell was a community leader, where he took an active role in his community and enjoyed helping others, especially his family and friends. Russell enjoyed garden tractor pulling; watching college basketball and the Cincinnati Reds; farming; and keeping a meticulous home and lawn. Russell was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and dear friend. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and his community.

Russell will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 61 years: Mrs. Vera Marie (Schroeder) McSwain of Indianapolis; his son: Brian McSwain and his wife: Susan of Indianapolis; his grandchildren: Heather Dornbusch and her husband: Ben; Benjamin D. McSwain; Brianna M. McSwain; and Jenna M. McSwain, all of Indianapolis; and his great-granddaughter: Clara Dornbusch of Indianapolis.

He is also survived by his sisters: Wilma Jean Fels of Cincinnati, Ohio and Mary Lou Hart of Madison; his brother: James W. McSwain and his wife: Charlene of Decatur, Indiana; his sister-in-law: Marguerite Schroeder of Bedford, Indiana, and his several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Emerson G. and Edna G. (Garard) McSwain; his son: Kevin W. McSwain, who died on March 12th, 1989; his brothers-in-law: Harold Fels, who died December 25th, 2009, and Harold Schroeder, who died July 6th, 2002; and his sister-in-law: Irene Smith, who died April 16th, 1998.

Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, August 19th, 2015, by Pastor K.C. Banta, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana. Interment followed in the Vevay Cemetery.

Calling was held for friends and family on Tuesday, August 18th at the funeral home.

Full military rites were conducted by the Honor Guard of the Vevay American Legion Post #185 and the Vevay VFW Post #5396 at the cemetery.

Robert Keyer

Robert Lee Keyer, 54, of East Enterprise, passed away at 7:11 a.m. on Monday, August 17th, 2015, at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison.

Robert was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 25th, 1960, the son of Ruth Marie (Kidd) Keyer of Cincinnati and Melvin W. Keyer of East Enterprise. He had worked at Anchor-Hocking Glass Company in Greendale, Indiana.

Bob enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Bob is also survived by a son: Brad Keyer of Hamilton, Ohio; a stepson: Stanley Schreibeis of Middletown, Ohio; and by three sisters: Teena Devers of Patriot; Kim Scott of Bonita Springs, Florida; and Melissa Goodyear of Cincinnati.

He is also survived by four brothers: Randy Keyer of Cleves, Ohio; Kelly Keyer of Scottsburg, Indiana; Billy Keyer of East Enterprise; and Shaun Keyer of Chicago, Illinois. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 21st, at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Friends may call on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Moores Hill, Indiana.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Cards are available at the funeral home.

Louise Otter

Louise Otter, age 62, of Vevay, passed away at 5:07 p.m. on Saturday, April 7th, 2018, at her son’s residence in Florence, Indiana.

Louise entered this life on June 6th, 1955, in Vevay, the loving daughter of Charles Hayden Otter and Virginia Louise (Scudder) Romans. She was raised in Vevay, where she attended high school.

Louise was a former employee for the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay for 25 years; Plastic Moldings Factory in Vevay for 4 1/2 year;s and for Grand Victoria in Rising Sun, for four years. She was also a former employee for Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay for two years; and as a deli clerk for the Vevay IGA for four years.

Louise attended Mount Sterling Baptist Church in Mount Sterling, Indiana. She resided all of her life in the Switzerland County community. Louise enjoyed reading, coloring and embroidering and will be deeply missed by her loving family.

Louise will be deeply missed by her son, Troy Otter and his wife Kim of Florence, Indiana; by her daughter, Tasha McElfresh and her husband Rick of Falmouth, Kentucky; her grandchildren: Thomas McElfresh, Blane Otter and Hayden Otter; her mother, Virginia Louise (Scudder) Romans of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; her sister, Kathy Griffin of Patriot; her brother, Allen Otter of Patriot; her sister-in-law, Susie Otter of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; and her several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Hayden Otter; by her step-father, Howard Romans; and by her brother, David Otter.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, April 14th, 2018, at 10 a.m., by Reverend Mike Sawalich at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana, 47043. Interment will follow in the Pleasantview Cemetery, 3980 Zion Station Road Dry Ridge, Kentucky, 41035.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, April 13th, at the funeral home.
