Roberta Bruce

Roberta Clara Bruce, 90, of Rising Sun, passed away at 9:05 p.m. on Friday, November 23rd, 2018 at The Waters of Rising Sun.

Roberta was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on June 8th, 1928, the daughter of the late Clara Virginia (Hollen) and Robert Barker. She graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio. She retired from Indiana Bell.

When her health allowed her, Roberta attended Rising Sun Church of Christ. Roberta loved to play bingo. She also had an artistic side and was a florist, enjoyed making candy and painting.

Roberta is survived by her daughter, Roberta Walters and husband Roy, of Rising Sun; by her son, Eric Phillip Bruce and wife Cynthia Adams, of Columbus, Ohio; by her sister, Sandy Lombardi, of Canton, Ohio; and by her brother, Dick Murdock, of South Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Cole Walters and Cliff Walters; and by her great grandchildren: Jonah Walters, Joy Walters, Evan Walters and Eli Walters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Phillip Bruce; by her brother, David Barker; and by her sister, Ginger Perkins.

A memorial visitation for Roberta will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, November 30th, at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun.

Memorial donations may be made to The Waters of Rising Sun Activity Fund. Cards are available at the funeral home.

John Collier

John Richard Collier, age 92, of Hanover, died on Wednesday, November 21st, 2018, at 10:27 a.m. at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.

John entered this life on March 23rd, 1926 in Guilford, Indiana in Dearborn County. He was the loving son of the late Richard M. and Florence Irene Gipson Collier. He was raised in Guilford and was a 1944 graduate of Guilford High School, where he was a four year letter winner, played basketball, was twice leading scorer, captain of the team, and most valuable player as senior in 1944.

John was inducted into the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged.

In 1947 he started college at Hanover and graduated from Hanover College in 1951. At Hanover, he started every basketball game in his four years there, was captain of the team, most valuable player as a junior, and helped Hanover College win its first Hoosier Collegiate Conference Championship. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Fraternity at Hanover College and received his Masters in Education from Indiana University.

He began his teaching career at Vevay High School in 1951 and was the head coach of the basketball program. While coaching at Vevay the team won back to back Sectional titles in 1954-1955 and 1955-1956, including a memorable 44-42 win over powerhouse Aurora in 1955 - the same Aurora team that had beaten the 1954 Milan State Champs.

John was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Matson on August 2nd, 1952 in the Aurora United Methodist Church in Aurora, Indiana. This happy union of 66 years was blessed with three sons, John M., Steve L. and David R. Collier.

In 1956, John began teaching at Brookville High School and taught there until 1966. While at Brookville he was named coach of the year three times by the Southeastern Indiana Coaches-Officials-Principals Association and his Brookville teams would win five Sectional titles and one Regional championship under his guidance.

In 1966, he embarked on his college coaching career at Hanover College his alma mater and became an assistant professor, basketball coach and athletic director, retiring in 1991. He coached the Hanover Panthers to five berths in the NAIA national tournament and was three times coach of the year in the Hoosier Collegiate Conference. While serving as the coach for the Hanover Panthers from 1966-1988 the Panther’s won 388 games and won multiple conference championships. John was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979, having won 615 games as a high school and college coach. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1989, the Hanover College Hall of Fame in 1995.

The Hanover College Alumni established the John R. Collier Mental Attitude Award in 1991 in his honor and the award is presented annually. John was selected in the summer of 1985 with two other NAIA coaches to visit Africa, to teach the citizens of that continent the fundamentals of basketball. Hanover College named the arena there in his honor “ The John Collier Arena”.

John was civic minded and served on several advisory boards in the Madison/Hanover area, Hanover United Methodist Church, served as president of the Hanover College Alumni Association, started the Hanover Basketball camp for boys, was bestowed the honor of Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Otis Bowen, and a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Julian Carroll. John dedicated his life to education, coaching, mentoring, leadership and encouraging many youth to betterment in society.

John will be missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Dorothy Jean Collier of Hanover; by his sons: John M. Collier and his wife Jody of Cincinnati, Ohio, Steve L. Collier and his wife Mallory of Ohio, David R. Collier of Madison, and Pat Collier and his wife, Phyllis of Vevay; by his grandchildren: Chance, Katie, Michael, Clark, Ryan, Lance and Chad; by his 10-great-grandchildren; by his brother, Robert Collier and his wife Julianne of Versailles, Indiana; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Collier; by his mother, Florence Irene Gipson Collier; and his sister, Ruth Holtegal.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, December 1st, 2018, at 4:30 p.m., at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Hanover Cemetery on Logan’s Point Drive in Hanover.

Friends may call on Saturday, December 1st, from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hanover United Methodist Church or the Hanover College Athletic Department. Cards are available at the funeral home.

Mary Ravenscraft

Mary W. (Brown) Ravenscraft, 90, of Aurora, Indiana, passed away at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, November 24th, 2018 at Highpoint Health in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Mary was born in Switzerland County on April 29th, 1928, the daughter of the late Hazel (Whitham) and Everett Brown. Mary grew up in Switzerland County, and was a 1946 graduate of Patriot High School.

Mary worked various jobs over the years, including at the Chair Factory and Schenley Distillery. Mary was a “Pink Lady” at Dearborn County Hospital for several years.

She married Charles Ravenscraft on April 11th, 1947 at Grant’s Creek Baptist Church. Mary and Charles were married over 50 years until his passing on January 6th, 1998. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Aurora and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mary enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching, reading and painting. Mary and Charles were also Cincinnati Reds fans and always had the radio tuned in to the game when the team was playing.

Mary is survived by her son, William Ravenscraft (Barbara), of Patriot; by her grandchildren: John Welling (Andi), Angela Metzger (Michael), Melissa Davis (Sam), Rachel Ravenscraft and William Joe Ravenscraft (Heather); and by her great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Justin, Damien, Sam, Mariah, Cameron, Lucas, Charlie, Austin, Alex, Alizabeth, Noah and Eli.

Mary is also survived by two sisters: Lelia Harris, of Somerset, Kentucky and Evelyn Sams, of Aurora, Indiana; by her brother, Arthur Brown, of Rising Sun; and by her sister-in-law Debra Brown, of Rising Sun.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Charles; by a daughter, Linda Welling in 2003; and by brothers: Richard Brown, Lester Brown and Norman Brown.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 28th at Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun, with Pastor Bill Seacrest officiating. Visitation was held on Wednesday prior to the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial was in New Liberty Cemetery in East Enterprise.

Memorial donations may be made to the family (for the benefit of the great grandchildren’s education). Cards are available at the funeral home.

Estol Howlett

Estol A. Howlett, 87, of Aurora, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, November 27th, 2018 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

He was born February 7th, 1931 in Ripley County, Indiana, son of the late Fred Howlett and Anna (Sheriff) Howlett.

Estol worked as a laborer for the Aurora Casket Company for many years.

He enjoyed hunting and he loved to whittle; he made turkey calls as well as many other things. He also raised gourds and made bird houses. Estol raised cattle and farmed for many years. He enjoyed reading and gardening, but loved spending time with his loving wife and family.

Estol is survived by his daughters: Karen (Cliff) Jackson of Aurora and Tina Howlett (Walt Tinsley) of Lawrenceburg; by his siblings: Fred Howlett of Rising Sun and Ruth Matthews of West Harrison, Indiana; by his grandchildren: Cody Jackson (Dahi Hale) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Will (Becca) Jackson of Bright, Indiana; and by his great grandsons: Charlie Estol, Henry Dean and Lewis Raymond Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his loving wife, Marlene A Howlett; by his brother, Pete Howlett; and by his sister, Lorna Ray Wesling.

Friends are invited to pay their respects to the family on Friday, November 30th, from noon until 2 p.m. at the Rullman Hunger Funeral Home, 219 Mechanic Street, Aurora, Indiana.

Services will be held at the funeral home, beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 30th, with Pastor Tommy Beatly officiating. Interment will follow in the River View Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana.

Contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children Hospital.

William Branham

William G. Branham, 64, of Hanover, passed away Sunday, January 23rd, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. He was born May 3rd, 1940, in Switzerland County, the son of James and Blanche (Richey) Branham. He retired in 2004 after 40 years working in the food service department at Madison State Hospital. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Madison and the Retired Indiana Public Employees Association. Survivors include his wife, Ruth A. (Sanders) Branham of Hanover; his daughters, Debra S. Coffey of Madison and Denise L. Branham of Hanover; his son, John E. Branham of Edinburgh, Indiana; his sister, Shirley Branham of Indianapolis; his brothers, Donald E. Branham of Madison and Robert Branham of Milton, Kentucky; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Branham, Jr.; and his sister, Frances Branham. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 26th, by Bishop Newel L. Stephens at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Madison. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humanitarian Aid Fund of the Church.

Lottie Smith

Lottie Ellie Smith, 87, of Vevay, passed away Sunday, January 23rd, at Swiss Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vevay following an extended illness. She was born July 25th, 1917, in Waynesburg, Kentucky, the daughter of Ed N. and Annie May (Singleton) Smith. She resided in Waynesburg most of her life. She was a practical nurse most of her life, caring for the elderly. She was a member of the Waynesburg Church of God. She enjoyed playing piano and mandolin. She enjoyed beautiful flowers, gardening, singing and attending church. She had been a resident at Swiss Villa the past eight years and had become apart of the family there. She was lovingly cared for by all who worked there. She will be greatly missed by the patients and staff at Swiss Villa. Survivors include her sister-in-law and caregiver, Juanita Smith of Burlington, Kentucky; her nephews and nieces, Dallas and Ronald Smith, James and Lawrence Cammack, Anna Laura Garrett, Diana Sue Spillman, Thomas Edward Smith and Deborah K. Parnell; several great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Gladys Henderson and Katherine Cammack; and her brothers, Arthur, Archie, Arvel, Elliott and Adla Smith. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 26th, by Reverend Howard Wade at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial was in Double Springs Cemetery in Waynesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Swiss Villa Memorial Fund or Gideon’s Memorial Bible Plan.

Betty Jean Mishler

Mrs. Betty Jean (Martin) Mishler, age 74, of East Enterprise, passed away at 3:48 a.m. on Sunday, August 9th, 2015, at her residence.

Betty entered this life on June 15th, 1941, in Switzerland County, the daughter of the late Margaret Anna Martin, who passed away on November 24th, 1995. She was raised in Switzerland County, where she was a 1959 graduate of the Patriot High School. After high school, Betty was employed for the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay.

Betty was united in marriage on September 4th, 1959 to Paul Eugene Griffin, and to this union arrived two daughters, Susan and Lisa, to bless their home. Betty was later united in marriage on April 27th, 1973, at the Mount Sterling Baptist Church to the late John E. Mishler. Betty and John shared 23 years of marriage together until he passed away on October 30th, 1996.

Betty was a former clerk for the Osborn's Clothing Store in Vevay. She was a former stocker for IGA and SuperValu, and enjoyed delivering groceries to the elderly folks in the Vevay community for several years. She was also a former employee for the chicken factory in Albertville, Alabama.

Betty resided in the Switzerland County community since 1992. She attended the New Liberty Baptist Church in East Enterprise. Betty enjoyed feeding deer and birds at her home, especially doughnuts from the grocery store. She also loved golfing, flowers and her cats. But most of all, Betty enjoyed shopping, especially on the QVC Shopping Network. Almost every day the Fed Ex Mail Carrier would deliver a QVC Package to her home.

Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister.

Betty will be dearly missed by her loving daughters: Susan Renee (Griffin) Darling-Covington and her husband: Duane of Bennington; and Lisa Ann Creech and her husband: James of Aurora, Indiana; by her grandchildren: Heather McAlister, Jason Skipworth, Kaitlyn Darling and Chris Creech; and by her great-grandchildren: Gunnar, Kelsey, Kyle, Ryan, Lilyana, Blaine, Kennli and Parker.

She will also be dearly missed by her sisters: Ginny Leap and her husband: Donnie of Vevay; and Ruth Lohide of East Enterprise; and her several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother: Margaret Anna Martin, who died on November 24th, 1995; her second husband: John E. Mishler, who died on October 30th, 1996; and her brother-in-law: Charles E. Lohide, who died on October 13th, 2006.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 13th, 2015, at 11 a.m., by Reverend Mike Jones, at the Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay. Interment will follow in the Florence Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends was held on Wednesday, August 12th, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Florence Cemetery or to the Switzerland County Animal Shelter. Cards are available at the funeral home.
