William H. Kendall Sr.
William (Bill) H. Kendall, 84, a seven-year resident of Hutchinson, departed this life Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Infinia of Hutchinson, where he resided for the past three years. A large gathering of Bill's family was at his side.

Bill was born Nov. 29, 1920, at Grady Hospital, Atlanta, Ga., to Cornelius and Irene Parker Edmondson and later adopted by Marie and Vernon Kendall. His parents, two wives, Mary and Lila, and one grandchild, Michael ,preceded him in death.

Many who love him survive Bill. He was the fun-loving father to sons, William H. Kendall II of Hutchinson, and Randall L. Kendall of Manassas, Va.; mentor to stepdaughters, Diana Stogdill of Counsel Bluffs, Iowa, and Karen Holte of Des Moines, Iowa; "White Knight" father-figure to nieces, Ruth Bronson of Hutchinson, and Honey Grant of Junction City; grandfather to 13; and great-grandfather to 14.

Throughout Bill's life he was a hard worker with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. In his younger years he supported his family by driving a taxi in Miami, Fla. While in Florida he discovered his gift for cooking and hung up his "cabby cap" and opened his first drive-in restaurant. In 1950, he and his family moved to Kansas and opened two popular drive-in restaurants and a filling station in Manhattan, and one drive-in restaurant in Junction City. In the early 60s he moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, opening what was considered by many as a landmark restaurant by the name of Kendall's Cafe. Throughout his career as a restaurant owner/operator, patrons not only savored the results of his culinary talents, but also enjoyed his wonderfully cheerful personality.

Bill loved to travel - often in the company of his Holiday Rambler RV club. Many summers would find him and his family camping in the comforts and safety of his Holiday Rambler trailer beside a tranquil Iowa lake, nestled in a dense Wyoming forest, or not far from a deep Arizona canyon. He also traveled overseas, touring many countries of Europe.

He was a consummate "shutter bug". Armed with his 35mm camera and zoom-lens, no creature that roamed God's green earth, no breath-taking scenic view, no newly found friend, and no camera-shy family member was spared from his obsession. Everywhere Bill traveled he made life-long friends who appreciated his uplifting nature and thoughtful character.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main Street, Hutchinson, KS 67501, with Gospel Chapel Church Elder Duane Schmidt officiating.

Bill's family requests memorial contributions are made to the American Alzheimer's Association or Trinity Hospice of Wichita, both in care of Elliott Mortuary.
