Sharon Compton

Sharon Ann Compton, 66, of Elkhorn City, formerly of Salyersville, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Sharon was born in Omar, W.Va., Oct. 8, 1946, the daughter of the late Hobert and Leona Alberta Irwin Hoskins.

She had been a restaurant cook and waitress.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kennith Percy Compton.

She is survived by two sons, James Kenneth Akers (Jennifer Kaye) and Christopher Michael Akers, both of Salyersville; one daughter, Brenda Lea Akers of Salyersville; two brothers, David Hoskins of Pikeville and Mike Hoskins of Stanville; two sisters, Judy Stevens of Betsy Layne and Mildred Miller of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren, James H. Akers, Cassandra Katherine Young and Chrissie Jo Akers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in the Betsy Layne Church of God with Tim McClanahan and Samuel Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the Akers Cemetery, Salyersville. Arrangements are under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Thursday, at the Church of God, with services each evening at 7.

Pallbearers are Mike Hoskins, Sonny Dale Hoskins, James Hobert Akers, Millard Stevens, Sam Stevens, David Hoskins and Randy Hoskins.

Kenneth Kennedy

Kenneth Andy Kennedy, 69, of Delbarton, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson, W.Va.

He was born in Welch, W.Va., Dec. 23, 1944, the son of the late Hawk and Minnie Curry Kennedy.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War with the 9th Infantry. He was also a member of the Obrien Masonic Lodge No. 101, Beni Kedem Shrine, VFW Post 8001, NRA, Moose Club, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Crews Kennedy; two children, Marion Hawk Kennedy and Kennetha Amanda Kennedy, both of Delbarton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Peggy Ryder officiating. Burial will follow in the Kennedy Cemetery at Ben Creek Road, Varney, W.Va. Arrangements are under direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Nell Kiser

Nell Marie Kiser, 70, of Lombard, Ill., died Nov. 16, 2012, at the Elmhurst Hospital, Elmhurst, Ill.

She was born in Elkhorn City, Feb. 9, 1942, the daughter of the late Chris and Pearl Ramey.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Wayne Kiser; three brothers, Kermit Ramey, Eugene Ramey and Herman Ramey; and two sisters, Sybil Belcher and Shelby Mullins.

She is survived by her husband, Rudy Kiser; one son, Greg Kiser; one daughter, Jennifer Frediana; one brother, Arnold Ramey; one sister, Lois Kieter; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the Timothy Lutheran Church, with burial following in Forest Hills Cemetery, Glen Ellyn, Ill. Arrangements were under direction of Brust Funeral Home of Lombard.

Sylvia Little

Sylvia Damron Little, 66, of Penny Road, Virgie, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Parkview Nursing & Rehab Center.

She was born in Pikeville, May 4, 1946, the daughter of the late Claudie Damron and Spicey Little Damron.

She was a homemaker and of the Freewill Baptist faith.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charley Damron.

She is survived by her husband, Earl Little; one son, Darrell Ratliff; one daughter, Jennifer Roberts; four brothers, Oley Damron, Jackson Damron, Dempsey Damron and Jay Damron; two sisters, Carol Ramey and Susie Blackburn; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Gibson and Terry Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Newsome Branch Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Michael O'Quinn

Michael Jay O'Quinn of Pensacola, Fla., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Augsberg, Germany, Sept. 20, 1955, the son of Garnet O'Quinn and the late Jack O'Quinn.

He owned Apostrophe Fencing Company and was a member of Avalon Baptist Church, Milton.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kelly.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer "Jennie"; and four children, Taylor O'Quinn, Kyeen Matthews, Carlee Matthews and Jackelyn O'Quinn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, in the Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under direction of Oak Lawn Funeral Home of Pensacola.

Visitation with a reception will be held at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4.

Thurman Tackett

Thurman Lee Tackett, 63, of Beaver, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha Lou Tucker Tackett.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, in the Samaria Old Regular Baptist Church, Teaberry, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Hall Funeral Home of Martin.

Terry Taylor

Terry Michael Taylor, 55, of Wise, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.

He was born in Williamson, W.Va., March 9, 1957, the son of Janice Gay (Wilmer) Bogar of Hardy and Theodore Taylor of Sidney.

He was a sheet metal roofer and was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents he is survived by one daughter, Amy Michele (Dan) Provenzano of Ohio; one brother, Curtis (Tracy) Bogar of Hardy; two sisters, Judy (Saul) Noble of Wise, Va., and Anita Faye Bogar of Pound, Va.; two grandchildren, Kameron and Jayden; five nephews, C. J. Johnson, Cody Osborne, Brent Farley, Dustin Noble and Kasey Noble; two nieces, Kaitlyn Bogar and Missie (Jeff) McCoy; one great-nephew, Cameron Johnson; and one great-niece, Ally Noble.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in the Narrows Branch Old Regular Baptist Church with Bobby Scott Sr., Frankie Scott and Lacy Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the Bobby Scott Cemetery, Hardy. Arrangements are under direction of West Funeral Home of McAndrews.

Visitation is one hour before the service, at the church.

Memorials may be made to assist with funeral expenses.

Fannie Thornberry

Fannie Thornberry, 94, of Stone, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at the South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Facility.

She was born at Heisey, Sept. 11, 1918, the daughter of the late Don and Mintie Francis Varney.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Enon United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Moses Maynard; her second husband, Elmer Thornberry; two sons, Moses Maynard Jr. and Jimmie Maynard; two brothers, Willie Varney and John L. Varney; and one sister, Melba Chapman.

She is survived by her children, Betty Justice of Tucson, Ariz., John Maynard of Stone, Linda Carter of Delbarton, W.Va., and Judy Johnson of Danville, Va.; one stepson, Roger Thornberry of Fayetteville, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Rochella Foster of Gallipolis, Ohio, Bonnie Stewart of Owensboro and LaQuita Steggeman of Junction City, Kan.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Jan. 4, in the Hatfield Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Jerry McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler.

‘Mike’ Watts

George Michael “Mike” Watts, 52, of North Matewan, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Mingo County, W.Va., May 26, 1960, the son of the late Hudson “Pood” Watts Jr. and Joyce Varney Watts.

He was a truck driver.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ellen Hensley Watts.

He is survived by three siblings, Nyoka Elane Watts, Sandy Wells and Teresa Gooslin; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in the Chambers Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the family cemetery, North Matewan. Arrangements were under direction of Chambers Funeral Services Inc. of Matewan.

Carlos Williamson

Carlos Williamson, 72, of Phyllis, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Mountain View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City.

He was born April 7, 1940, the son of the late Ervin Williamson and Hester Slone Williamson.

He was a coal miner.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Denver Williamson, Garnet Williamson, Benny Williamson and Curtis Williamson; and two sisters, Brook Stiltner and Nola Pugh.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Eloise Chapman of Phyllis; one son, Kelvin Williamson of Phyllis; one daughter, Theresa Miller of Phyllis; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in the original Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Frank Crum officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice Family Cemetery, Phyllis. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Special services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday.
