Homer Hatfield, Sr.

Homer A, Hatfield, Sr., 75, of Hanover, W.Va., Tuesday, Dec. 18t, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital at Beckley W.Va.

He was born May 8, 1937, at Simon, W.Va., the son of the late Otis and Francis Lawrence Hatfield.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alex, Don and Clarence Hatfield; and two sisters, Ruby Hall and Truby Toler.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hatfield of Hanover; his two sons, Douglas Dean Hatfield of Hanover, Homer Hatfield, Jr. of Oceana, W.Va.; two daughters, Pam Kennedy of Clear Fork, W.Va., and Denita Walker of Clear Fork; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren;

Funeral services will held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Hanover House of Faith with Rev. Larry Lester and Rev. Jarvas Walls officiating. Burial will follow in the Toler Cemetery at Laurel Branch.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Hanover House of Faith Friday with a special service at 7 pm.

Bonita King

Bonita King, 65, of Elkhorn City died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born May 10, 1947, in Pike County to the late Corbit Blackburn and Bertha Ramey Blackburn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis King, Jr.; one son, Larry King; and one grandchild.

She is survived by one son, Burl “Shag” King of Ashcamp; and one daugther, Judy Mullins of Elkhorn City; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Corbit Blackburn, Jr. of Lick Creek and Phillip Blackburn of Pikeville; and three sisters, Bernice Ramey, Leda Carol Branham both of Lick Creek and Don Rita Fredrick of Ann Arbor, Mich.

Funeral services will be Saturday, at Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Iva Layne

Iva Lee “Preach” Layne, 84, a resident of Barrenshe Creek of Freeburn, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville.

He was born April 15, 1928, at Freeburn, the son of the late Merda and Bessie Griffey Layne.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Mounts Layne; two daughters, Denita Layne and Linda Layne; one grandson, Brian Keith Ward; three brothers, Raymond, Roy and Bill Layne; and three sisters, Ruth Mounts, Beatrice Hardin and Ruby Charles.

He was a retired coal miner.

He is survived by his children, Violet (Jay) Orr of Orland Hills, Ill., Ola (Luther) Davis of Pilgrim Knob, Va., Pamela (Jackie) Perry of Dandridge, Tenn., Sondra (Jeffery) Johnson of Roanoke, Va., Sherry (Ray) Griffith of Phelps, Teresa (Johnny) Hurley of Majestic, Allan (Kay) Layne of Sprigg, W.Va., Jerry (Pam) Layne and Joey (Debbie) Layne both of Freeburn; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Joyce Workman of Defuniak Springs, Fla. and Grace Mullins of Kimper.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the Barrenshe Church of God with Rev. Bobby Dale Wolford and Rev. Doug Maynard officiating.

Burial will follow in the Layne Family Cemetery, Barrenshe Creek.

Visitation is Friday at the church with services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home of Phelps.

Brenda Morgan

Brenda Gail Morgan, 57, of Simon, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at her residence.

She worn Aug. 11, 1955, in Corbin, the daughter of the late Billy Jack and Jenette Boggs Cornett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Earmon Morgan; and one brother, Tom Norton.

She was a homemaker and a born again Christian of the Baptist Faith. She loved to grow a garden, work in her flower beds, to fish, to hunt, to feed the birds and to take care of her house dog.

She is survived by her two sons, Johnathan Haynes of Cyclone and Jason Haynes of Ecorse Mich.; three grandchildren; seven sisters, Dorothy Mahoney, Phyllis Wilson, Debra Hepola, Marsha Garwick, Margaret Pierce, Elanor Cornett and Rosie Norton; four brothers, Billy Norton, Kenny Norton, Rodney Cotton and Bobby Norton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lonnie Blankenship and Rev. Andy Bo Kennedy officiating.

Burial will follow in the Milty Morgan Cemetery at Long Branch of Simon.

Joseph Reed

Joseph Reed, 43, of Pikeville, died Tuesday Dec. 18, 2012.

He was born Aug. 25, 1969, in Jeffersonville, Ind. to the late Basil and Rebecca Clark Reed.

He is survived by his wife, Melissa Dryden Reed of Pikeville; two sons;, Danny Bailey and Shawn Bailey; two grandchildren; one brother, Charles Burgett of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister; Kathy Craven of Columbus, Ohio.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Mabel Sexton

Mabel Sexton, 84, of Pikeville, died Dec. 20, 2012, at Parkview Nursing Home.

A private family service will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Fuenral Home.

Bennie Tackett

Bennie Joe Tackett, 61, of Clay City, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.

He was born in Pikeville, June 24, 1951, the son of the late Clarence and Artie Tackett.

He was employed by Kroger and attended the Freewill Baptist Church, Clay City.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Tackett; one stepson, James Tackett; three brothers, L.J. Tackett, Harold Dean Tackett and Bobby Gene Tackett; and one sister, Dorothy Domino.

He is survived by his wife, Helen King Tackett; three sons, Keith Tackett of Michigan, Tom T. Tackett and Jack Tackett, both of Harold; one daughter, Ilene Aune of Michigan; three stepsons, Dwaine Tackett, David Tackett and Dennis Tackett, all of Harold; one stepdaughter, Tootsie Tackett; 11 brothers and sisters, Archie B. Tackett of Michigan, Jerry Tackett, Irene Rose and Virgie Spears, all of Grethel, Gary Tackett, Eugene Tackett, Tony Tackett, Terry Tackett, Bonnie Allen and Darlene Tackett, all of Harold, Patty Miller of Betsy Layne; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, in the Glen Haven Memorial Chapel with Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in New Haven Memorial Gardens, New Carlisle. Arrangements are under direction of Glen Haven Memorial Chapel of New Carlisle, Ohio.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Lower Toler Church of Christ, Harold, and after noon Friday in Glen Haven Memorial Chapel.

Betty Trout

Betty Sue Trout, 64, of Ransom, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

She was born in Pike County, March 12, 1948, the daughter of the late Ermal and Hazel Stoots Hager.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Hager; and one sister, Annie Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Henry C. Trout; one daughter, Susan Kay Ratliff of Charleston, W.Va.; two sons, James Ermal “Jamie” Trout of Louisa and Henry C. Trout Jr. of Delbarton, W.Va.; one sister, Mary New of Ransom; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 22, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Ransom. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday with special singing at 7.

Beverly Coleman

Beverly Lynn Coleman, 55, of Pikeville, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at her home.

She was born in Pikeville, Aug. 23, 1957, the daughter of the late William and Birdell Adkins Justice.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Toms Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

On Feb. 14, 1975, she married Harold Dean Coleman, who survives.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Jonathan Dean Coleman (Bethany) and Derek Adam Coleman (Beth), both of Pikeville; three sisters, Betty Kennard (Gary) of Palm Bay, Fla., Barbara Carter (Steve) of Owensville and DeeDee McCoy (Tim) of Pikeville; four grandchildren, Adam Coleman, Ava Coleman, Will Coleman and Eli Coleman; and her best friend, Judy Slone.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in the J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel with Tim McCoy, Tracy Patton and Barry Clark officiating. Burial followed in the Glen Coleman Cemetery, Broad Bottom, Pikeville. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Pallbearers were Todd McCoy, Mike Rice, Matt Carter, Bryan Penix, Sean O'Brian, Matt Ray, Dustin Coleman, Lance Coleman, Perry Coleman, Rusty Justice, Gary Kennard and Steve Carter.

Memorials may be made in Beverly’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 4324 13th St., Ashland, KY 41102.

Roger Coleman

Roger Coleman, 72, of Wolfpit, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Pike County, Aug. 10, 1940, the son of the late Joe Coleman and Amie (Coleman) Coleman.

He was a coal miner.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Sawyers Coleman; and one sister, Betty Robinson.

He is survived by two daughters, Dewana Kendrick and Tonya Bartley, both of Wolfpit; three brothers, Bill Coleman, Leonard Coleman and Larry Coleman; four sisters, Glenna Mullins, Floetta Coleman, Patricia Coleman and Delores Newsome; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Reed Adkins officiating. Burial followed in the Yellow Hill Cemetery, Regina. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.
