Dutch Clark

Dutch Clark, 63, of Grethel, died Thursday, May 21, 2015.

He was born March 4, 1952, the son of the late John Clark and Syrvelva Carroll Clark.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, FloEllen Clark.

He was a disabled coal miner, a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the Betsy Layne DAV, Chapter #169, a member of the Wheelwright Masonic Lodge #889, Olieka Shrine Temple, the Mud Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Scottish Rite and Klan 31, Outhouse #2.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny Lynn Rogers Clark; a son, Dutch Nicholas Clark of Grethel; two daughters, Angela Clark (Todd) Wolfe and Andrea Clark (Gary) Hall, all of Grethel; a sister, Pauline Clark Thompson of Michigan; three brothers, Earnie Clark of Harold, Mickey Clark of West Virginia and Rickey Clark of Elkhorn City; and four grandchildren, AlexAndrea Dutch Wolfe, Ava Gabrielle Wolfe, Alexis Presley Hall and Syrelva Ann Clark.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Stephen Daniel Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Clark Family Cemetery, Grethel.

Visitation will be all day Saturday at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.

Bob Blackburn

Bob Blackburn, 86, of Regina, died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Pike County, May 1, 1929, the son of the late Hassell & Mary (Martin) Blackburn.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse, Laura (Coleman) Blackburn; two daughters, Vivian Coleman and Rita Dewerff; two sons, B.L. Blackburn and infant Bobby Dean.

Bob is survived by his loving daughters, Nellie Blair, Eileen Bostic and Loretta Leslie; 14 grandchildren, Roger Blair, Barry Blair, Christy Blair, Missy Coleman, Will Coleman, Leigh Ann Coleman, Josh Coleman, Chad Dewerff, Beth Leslie, Rebekah Blackburn, Joe Blackburn, Jill Blackburn, Matthew Blackburn and Amanda Blackburn; 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was a blessed man.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Terry Gibson and Ralph Wallace officiating. Burial followed in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, Chloe Road. Arrangements were under direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Esther Blankenship

Esther Margaret Blankenship, 88, of Burning Fork, died Monday, May 25, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born in Pike County, Feb. 20, 1927, the daughter of the late Ben Stratton and Ellen Stratton.

She was a homemaker.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Blankenship; and six siblings, Bill Stratton, Marvin Stratton, John G. Stratton, Olive Hughes, Gladys Mullins and Augusta Elswick.

She is survived by three children, Mike Blankenship (Lerlie), Jim Blankenship (Vicky) and Marquetta Hubbard (Joe), all of Pikeville; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, May 27, in the Community Funeral Home Chapel with Dale Williamson and Glen Hall officiating. Entombment will follow in the Blankenship Mausoleum, Burnette Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Community Funeral Home of Zebulon.

“Mickey” Elliott Jr.

Michael “Mickey” Patterson Elliott Jr., 77, of Bean Station, Tenn., formerly of Pikeville, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Letcher County, March 22, 1938, the son of the late Michael Patterson Sr. and Julia Ann Wright Elliott.

He was self-employed, the owner of Elliott’s Grocery, and was of the Christian faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Blackburn Elliott; and one sister, Deloris Blair (John Paul).

He is survived by one daughter, Michaelle Paige Elliott of Phyllis; two sisters, Colleen Merrithew-Glomer of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and Patricia Ann Huffman of Shelbyville; and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, May 28, in the Lucas & Son Funeral Home Chapel with David Johnson and Arnold Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, with special services at 7.

Mary Griffith

Mary Lou Griffith, 76, of Elsmere, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood.

She enjoyed watching soap operas and listening to Elvis Presley music. Mary Lou’s greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Brenda Kay Griffith and Sharon Lynn Griffith; and brother, Nathan Hill.

Mary Lou is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Robert; two daughters, Mary Givens and Bobbie Jo Osborne; two sons, Robert Griffith Jr. and Rodney Griffith; two sisters, Rosie (Wayne) Johnson and Lilly Cole; one brother, Elster Hill; 11 grandchildren, Amanda, April, Amy, William, Andrew, Robbie, Amber, Matthew, Brandon, Rodney Jr. and Ryan; 10 great-grandchildren, Keith, Ciera, Jenna, C.J., Morgan Jo, Hayden, Kamryn, Benjamin, Noah and Lane; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Visitation for Mary Lou will take place on Thursday, May 28, from 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials in Mary Lou’s name are appreciated to The Colon Cancer Alliance, 1025 Vermont Ave, NW Suite 1066, Washington, DC 20005.

Billy Little

Billy Ray Little, 79, of Hellier, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Mountain View Health Care Center, Elkhorn City.

Funeral services were held at noon Tuesday, May 26, in the Poor Bottom Freewill Baptist Church with Richard Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Cook Cemetery, Ashcamp. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Rhonda Maynard

Rhonda Lynette Maynard, 52, of Forest Hills, died Saturday, May 23, 2015.

She was born at South Williamson, Aug. 25, 1962, the daughter of Ruth Workman of Forest Hills and the late Herbert Workman.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Toler Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her fiancee, Darrell Keathley of Turkey Creek; several cousins and other family and friends.

Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday, May 28, with Donnie Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va., with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Arrangements are under direction R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Jimmy Mullins

Jimmy Douglas Mullins, 24, of Elkhorn City, died Saturday, May 23, 2015.

He was born Sept. 28, 1990, the son of Melissa Ann Mullins Pierce (Johnny) of Elkhorn City and Curtis Michael Hall of Shelbiana.

He was a salesman for Bruce Walters.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Easton Case Mullins of the home; his fiancee, Megan Ravencraft of Elkhorn City; two brothers, Cody Thomas Ramsey and Jonathon Pierce, both of Elkhorn City; two sisters, Tandra Renee Ramsey of Mouthcard and Hannah Beth Pierce of Elkhorn City; his maternal grandparents, Doug and Mary Ann Mullins of Virgie and Gail S. Mullins of Pikeville; and his paternal grandparents, Fontela and Ermel Griffith and Curt Hall, all of Shelbiana.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Homer Ramsey of the Old Regular Baptist Church and Adam Akers and Jason Beverly of the Freewill Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mullins Family Cemetery, Long Fork of Virgie. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Ruth Smith

Ruth Cole Smith of Ransom died Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Ruth was born in Hazard, the daughter of the late James and Pearlie Wells Cole.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Loraine Cole, Ruby Osborne, Thelma Morris and Launa Sutton Cole; and four brothers, Junior Cole, William “Bill” Cole, Elmer Cole and J. B. Cole.

Ruth was a graduate of Hazard High School, Lee’s Junior College at Jackson, and Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. She taught six years at Leatherwood Elementary School in Hazard and worked 31 years as a teacher and librarian for the Pike County Board of Education at Blackberry and Runyon Elementary schools. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, Belfry Homemakers Club, Williamson Woman’s Club, EKEA, KEA and National Retired Teachers Association. Ruth loved her church and was a member of the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.

More than anything, Ruth was a devoted mother and nana, who shared an extremely close relationship with her daughter, Launa, and grandson, Cole.

Survivors include her husband, Francis J. Smith, whom she would have been married to for 53 years on May 31, 2015; one daughter, Frances Launa Smith Stanley and her husband, Carl, of Forest Hills; one grandson, Ethan Cole Stanley of Forest Hills; one special second daughter, Teresa Sutton Thacker, and her husband, David, of Island Creek; special granddaughters, Megan and Madison Thacker; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Hubbard and other ministers of the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Huddy. Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.

Pallbearers are Zach Staton, Brandon Staton, Rodney Stanley, Harold Ray Osborne, Austin Stanley, Steven Baltes and Craig Dotson. Honorary pallbearers are Ethan Cole Stanley, David Thacker, Johnny Hall and Larry Stanley.

Virginia Smith

Virginia Ann Stump Smith, of Morristown, Tenn., was born at Coleman (Phelps), May 25, 1932.

She was the daughter of the late Frank and Sara Ann Dotson Stump.

Virginia left this world at 9:45 a.m. Saturday May 23, 2015, at the age of 82, while a patient at Pikeville Medical Center.

Virginia was a homemaker and a member of the Morristown Church of Christ.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Smith. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar, Frank and Ermel Stump; and two sisters, Pauline Smith and Jeanette Densmore.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Janet McGuire (Mike) of Bean Station, Tenn., Joann West (Carl) of Pikeville and Sharon Blackburn (Keith) of Raccoon. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Jason McGuire (Beverly), Ashley Nicholson (Mark), Staci Jones (William), Traci Ramey (David) and Kayla Thornbury (Joe); and her six great-grandchildren, Lauren, Weston, Madilyn, Clayton, Landon, and Carter.

Virginia has one brother remaining, Glen Stump of Sharps Chapel, Tenn.; and four sisters, Shelby Campbell of Phelps, Janice McLaughlin of Washington, Mich., Racene Hassard of California, and Justine Hickman of Phelps.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, in the Main Street Church of Christ with Blaine Kelly and Josh Allen officiating. Entombment followed at Annie E. Young Cemetery. Arrangements were under direction of J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Pallbearers were Jason McGuire, William Jones, David Ramey, Mark Nicholson, Joe Thornbury and Don Page.
