Jerry Compton

Jerry “Buckethead” Compton, 55, of Elkhorn City, died Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Williamson, W.Va., June 12, 1959, the son of the late Thomas F. Compton and Zettie Thacker Compton.

He was a truck driver.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas James Compton, Terry Dean Compton and Frederick Lee Compton.

He is survived by his lifetime companion, Mary Hylton of Elkhorn City; one son, Thomas Spears of Elkhorn City; one daughter, Jerrica Skeens of Pikeville; one brother, Mark Anthony Compton of Ashcamp; one sister, Charlene Compton of Ashcamp; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Overstreet and Ron Mann officiating. Burial will follow in the Elkhorn City Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday.

“Becky” Elkins

Maria Rebecca “Becky” Elkins, 59, of Lexington, formerly of Toler, died Friday, May 22, 2015, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington.

She was born in Silay City, Philippines, Oct. 12, 1955, the daughter of Ricardo and Nadja Cuaycong of Las Vegas, Nev.

She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Quinton Elkins.

Becky was raised in Butler, New Jersey, then moved to Toler, where she raised her family. She then relocated to Nicholasville, where she worked for UK Healthcare. She was a graduate of Belfry High School and Marshall University. She taught at the University of Kentucky and was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Nicholasville. She loved spending time with her family, crafting and was an avid UK basketball fan.

Other survivors include her son, Chris (Lauren) Elkins of Versailles; two daughters, Jeanna (Josh) Hatfield of Toler and Whitney Elkins of Lexington; her siblings, Mary Jean Cuaycong, Josephine (Scott) Duncan, Rick Cuaycong and Robert (Maria) Cuaycong; her six grandchildren, Jordan, Kylie and Elliot Elkins, Quinton, Ryan and J. J. Hatfield, and another grandchild on the way. Other survivors include her former husband, Kirby Elkins of Toler; her mother-in-law, Ruby Jean Hill of Toler; and a host of other family and friends.

Her gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, Belfry.

Hope Fields

Hope Nicole Davis Fields, 30, of Phelps, entered into rest Sunday, May 24, 2015, at McCarr.

She was born in Buchanan County, Va., Oct. 12, 1984.

Hope was a homemaker and a member of the Faith Christian Church at Phelps. She had also worked in the R&R program at the Gooslin Bottom Pentecostal Church. Hope was a loving mother, wife, and a wonderful daughter who will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Herbert and Edith Davis; her maternal grandfather, Estil Ashby; and two uncles, Eddie Earl Ashby and Estil Emerson Ashby Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Dewayne Phillip Fields; her father, Bobby (Samantha) Davis; her mother, Pamela Ashby; her stepfather, Jerry Cantrell; four sons, Matthew Brian Justice, Christopher Delno Justice, Gage Fields and Paxton Fields; four brothers, Rickey Lee Davis, Dewayne Davis, Chris Shortridge and B.J. Davis; four sisters, Crystal Renee Davis, Heather Davis, Susie Davis and Emma Davis; her maternal grandmother, Anna Lou Ashby; one sister-in-law, Katy Davis; five uncles, David Ashby, Danny Ashby, Michael Ashby, Rickey Ashby and Doug Ashby; seven aunts, Sheilda Walker, Linda Oliver, Charlotte Hager, Christina Graham, Martha Church, Frances Prater and Dolly Ashby; seven nephews, Eddie Ashby, Devon Begley, Dylan Begley, Jensen Begley, Scottie Stephens, Blake Stephens and Austin Blankenship; and one great-nephew, Jaycen Stephens. Hope is also survived by a host of friends and family to mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the Faith Christian Church, with the Revs. Donald Ray Davis, Michael Ashby and Andel Hurley officiating. Burial will follow in the Ashby Cemetery, Race Fork, Hurley, Va. Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.

Charlene Young

Charlene Young, 55, of Little Creek, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at her home.

Arrangements were incomplete at presstime and will be announced by Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Wanda Carter

Wanda Lee Carter, 71, of Douglas Parkway, Pikeville, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

She was born November 2, 1943, in Pike County, the daughter of the late Clay and Gusta Gillespie Harris.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Lewis Carter; and five brothers and a sister.

She is survived by three sons, Ted Carter Jr., Earl Edward Carter and Michael Eugene Carter; two daughters, Teresa Lynn Hamilton and Kimberly Ann Carter; four sisters, Mary Rose Adkins, Donna Sue Justice, Margaret Harris and Pam Harris; and 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Lucas and Son Funeral Home, with Levi Coleman and Billy Compton officiating. Burial will follow in Annie E. Young Cemetery, Pikeville.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Gwendel Johnson

Gwendel Johnson, 64, of Caney Highway, Pikeville, died Friday, May 29, 2015, at home.

He was born June 13, 1950, in Pike County, the son of Lexie Johnson and the late George F. Johnson.

He was self employed, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by two sons, Jeremy Johnson and Jordan Johnson; a daughter, Shannon Johnson; four brothers, Garla (Linda) Johnson, Gregory (Sue) Johnson; Garnie (Vicki) Johnson and George F. (Kathy) Johnson Jr.; and two sisters, Georgia (Jeff) Reed Johnson Scott and Garol (Jerry) Johnson Compton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Shelby Valley Church of Christ. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday at Lucas and Son Funeral Home, Pikeville, with special services at 7 p.m.; and Sunday at the Shelby Valley Church of Christ with church services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Lucas and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Eunice Morton

Eunice Arlene Morton, 74, of Pikeville passed away Thursday May 28, 2015.

She was born August 14, 1940 in Moss Creek, Arkansas, to the late Cloyd Asberry & Ruby (Millsap) Powers.

Arlene was one of seven siblings; James Curtis Powers, Cloyd Asberry Powers, Felly Wyatt (Joe) Powers, Fern Lynnet Mize, Selma Louise Caldwell and Phoebe Bernice Wilson.

Arlene worked at Krogers and Shurtleffs Dry Cleaners for many years.

She was married to the late James C. Morton.

Her life revolved around her family, one daughter, Sherry Aikin (Christopher) Salisbury; two sons, Kevin W. (Brenda) Morton and R. Dale (Mary) Morton all of Pikeville; grandchildren, Dezeree` Morton Garrett, Justin Dale Morton, Cassie Kristen Morton, Jarrod Nathaniel Morton, Mynatt Craig Morton, Scott Morton, Myca Morton Lewis; great-grandchildren, Ethan James Hayes, Jayla Faith Garrett, Brayden Morton, Cayden Blaze Morton, Rylan Deagan Whitehead, Kalyon Lewis, Eligh Lewis, Nicholas Morton, Nathaniel Morton, Namen Morton; and special friends Helen Smith and Melanie Morton.

She will be sadly missed by all those who loved and treasured her.

The family will accept friends at the Thacker Memorial Chapel Saturday, May 30, 2015, with services at 7 p.m. with Shawn Slone officiating. The funeral will be at 1 p.m., Sunday May 31, 2015, and the interment will follow at the Annie E. Young Cemetery at Chloe Road, Pikeville.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Charlene Young

Charlene Young, 55 of Little Creek Road, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at her residence.

She was born in Pike County on August 15, 1959, to Myrtle Hamilton Bryant of Pikeville and the late Curtis Bryant.She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, John Thomas Rowe of Little Creek, Eldon Matthew Rowe of Lexington; two daughters, Crystal Gail Rowe of Branhams Creek and Kendra Danielle Rene Riddle of Little Creek; one half-brother, Hurley Dean Bryant of Floyd County; and four grandchildren, Madylin Dwan Rowe, Axl Clyde Rowe, Kyle Matthew Rowe and Andy James Thomas Rowe.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Hall and Jones Funeral Home with Earl Dean Newsome and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Sam Hall Cemetery at Bear Fork.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with nightly services beginning at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under direction of the Hall and Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Bret Compton

Bret D. Compton, 30, of Michigan, died Friday, May 29, 2015, in Michigan.

He was born July 22, 1984, the son of Jackie Compton and the late Sammy Douglas Compton.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Jamie Douglas Compton (Elizabeth); and his nephew, Cody Douglas Compton; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4, in the Island Creek Old Regular Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Compton Family Cemetery, Pikeville. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.

Visitation is at the church after 6 p.m. Wednesday with services beginning at 7.

Harold Gunter

Harold Gunter, 60, of Little Robinson, died Friday, May 29, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Pike County, May 31, 1954, and was raised by the late Oliver and June Little Ratliff.

He graduated from Virgie High School in 1972 and entered the United States Army and served in Germany. He was a truck driver and a coal miner as well as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Harold was a lifetime member of the Defiers and loved hunting, fishing, gardening and four-wheeling.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Coleman Gunter; one daughter, Brittany Gunter of Virgie; two granddaughters, Rachel Hunter and Victoria Wright; five brothers, Paul Ratliff of Cheyenne, Wy., Frankie Gunter of Virgie, Ronnie Ratliff of Lexington, Timmy Combs of Dayton, Ohio, and Jeffrey Compton of Pikeville; and three sisters, Lois Simmons of Little Creek, Debbie Wells of Lexington and Betty Damron of Virgie.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, in the Hall & Jones Funeral Home Chapel with Caney Creek Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Potter Cemetery, Yeager. Arrangements are under direction of Hall & Jones Funeral Home of Virgie.
