Buford Fleming, 65, of Louisa, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 6, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Rick Fuller officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Mildred Hurley

Mildred Hurley, 69, of Lebanon, Tenn., formerly of Stopover, died Sunday, May 24, 2015, in Lebanon.

She was born in Phelps, April 19, 1946, the daughter of the late Ida Hatfield.

She is survived by two sons, Greeley Hurley and Brian Hurley; two daughters, Veronica Tello and Hollie Murphy; one brother, Tarzan Hurley; one sister, Daisy Rowe; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, in the Woodman Community Church with Pastor Odis Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the Hurley Cemetery, Stopover. Arrangements were under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.

“Tookie” Layne

Martha Hazel “Tookie” Layne, 51, of Phelps, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center, Phelps.

She was born in Williamson, W.Va., Nov. 11, 1963, the daughter of the late Claude and Rosie Wolford Roberts.

She was restorative rehab technician at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who really enjoyed her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Carl Ray Roberts.

Tookie is survived by her husband, William R. Layne; two daughters, Ashley Hatfield (Jamie) of Grassy and Brittany Gentry (Edward) of Phelps; two sisters, Geneva Ferrell of Phelps and Kathy Roberts of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Ava and Colton Gentry of Phelps; best friends, Alice Hurley and Tylina Smith of Blackberry, Tamika Samuel of Georgetown; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends left to mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 5, in the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Robert Coleman and Marty Lester officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Family Cemetery, Phelps. Arrangements are under direction of Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps.

Visitation is after 12:30 p.m. Friday until time for services.

“Milkman” Mullins Jr.

Roy V. “Milkman” Mullins Jr., 45, of Mouthcard, died Thursday, May 28, 2015.

He was born in Richlands, Va., April 27, 1970, the son of Roy V. Mullins Sr. and Jean Carol Mays Mullins of Lick Creek.

He was superintendent over ST&T Trucks and was a member of the Lick Creek Holiness Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Regina Kay Harrison Mullins; one son, Alex Mullins of Mouthcard; one daughter, Whitney Boggs of Mouthcard; one brother, James Christopher Mullins of Lick Creek; two sisters, Valerie Kinder of Pikeville and Angela Belcher of Mouthcard; and one grandchild, Jonathan Lenn Boggs.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 1, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Ray Sayers officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Arrangements were under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Homer Snodgrass

Homer Gene Snodgrass, 79, of Elkhorn City, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at his home.

He was born in Pikeville, Feb. 13, 1936, the son of the late Glen Snodgrass and Mattie Bowens Snodgrass.

He was a carpet installer.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glen “Snookie” Snodgrass; and one sister, Florine Newsome.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marietta Fraley Snodgrass; two sons, Rodney Snodgrass (Jenn) of Kingsland, Ga., and Homer Snodgrass of Pikeville; four daughters, Katie Bailiff (Ned), Cheryl Snodgrass and Stephanie Snodgrass, all of Elkhorn City, Loretta Snodgrass (Tracy Boyette) of Dana; one brother, Bill Snodgrass of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jr. Bailiff (Mary), Tammy Fields (Charles), Jeff Bailiff (Keisha) and Joe Snodgrass (Jamie), all of Elkhorn City, Nicole Johnson (Johnathan) of Dunedin, Fla., Chase Snodgrass (Jordan) of Pikeville, and Zachary Snodgrass, Bailey Snodgrass and Liam Snodgrass, all of Kingsland; 15 great-grandchildren, Tranvilla Bailiff, Chris Bailiff, Cory Bailiff (Tasha), Zach Fields, Mackenzie Bailiff, Sydney Bailiff, Elijah Snodgrass and Liam Snodgrass, all of Elkhorn City, Kayla Martin (Josh) of Prestonsburg, Cydney Snodgrass, Kinley Snodgrass, Riley Snodgrass and Lincoln Snodgrass, all of Pikeville, James Johnson and Dominic Johnson of Dunedin; and four great-great-grandchildren, Scarlett Rose and Heavenleigh Fields, both of Elkhorn City, and Noah Martin and Luke Martin, both of Prestonsburg.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Heath Cook and the staff of Jenkins Family Clinic for always being there for us and for your compassion; Premier Home Care of Pikeville; Winnie with Cooley Medical of Prestonsburg; and Peggy McKenzie and Kristy Hunt of BSAAA.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, in the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with Levi Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery, East Shelbiana. Arrangements are under direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Elkhorn City.

Visitation is from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.

“Richie” Blankenship

Richard “Richie” Blankenship, 49, of Freeburn, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center, South Williamson.

He was born in Freeburn, March 16, 1966, the son of Erma Mounts Blankenship of Freeburn and the late Nathan Blankenship.

He was a coal miner for Fortress Resources and a member of the Freeburn Free Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Janice Hamilton Blankenship; one son, Richard Blankenship Jr. of Phelps; two brothers, Ricky Blankenship and Nathan Blankenship, both of Freeburn; two sisters, Dreama Blankenship of Majestic and Della Dotson of Freeburn; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, in the Freeburn Free Pentecostal Church with Kenny Chapman, Odis Blankenship and others officiating. Burial will follow in the Blankenship Cemetery, Barrenshe Creek of Freeburn. Arrangements are under direction of Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps.

Visitation is after 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with special services nightly at 7.

Pallbearers will be co-workers at Fortress Resources.

“Big Daddy” Burchett

Leroy “Big Daddy” Burchett, 41, of Ivel, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born in Prestonsburg, July 15, 1973, the son of Jeanette Collins Burchett of Pikeville and the late Adron Burchett.

He was a disabled guardrail worker for Tri State Guardrail and a member of Toms Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Emma Salisbury Burchett; one son, Leroy Burchett Jr. of Ivel; four daughters, Cindy Shae Ward of Minnie, Candace Leigh Burchett of Zebulon, Casey Lynn Burchett of Prestonsburg and Petra Brooke Burchett of Ivel; two brothers, Adron Burchett Jr. and Richard Burchett, both of Ivel; one sister, Lola Jean Justice of Ivel; and three grandchildren, Shayleigh Renee, Daniel Jr. and Alexis LaShae.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, in the Nelson Frazier Funeral Home Chapel with Tim McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Burchett Family Cemetery, Ivel. Arrangements are under direction of Nelson Frazier Funeral Home of Martin.

Walter Burke

Walter A. Burke of Deltona, Florida, was born at Virgie and resided in Pikeville.

Walter died unexpectedly from complications of an infection leading to sepsis.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria (Mays Stewart) Burke; his stepchildren, Dr. Roger Stewart (Gail) and Beverly Stewart Huffman; five grandchildren, Shanan Shriber (Steve), Shayne Stewart, Shawn Stewart (Amy), Chad Huffman (Jennifer) and Kimberly Blandford (Kevin); five great-grandchildren, Chase, Brielle, Zachary, Luke and Adalyn; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Lexy, Mason and Luke; his siblings, Ray Burke (Betty), Dickie Burke (Jo), Ann Massengale (Lum); and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Allie Burke; and his siblings, Rodney Burke, Warren Burke and Billie Miller.

Walter attended Pikeville Academy, Pikeville High School and Pikeville College. He was in law enforcement for 20 years as the jailer of Pike County. He was the youngest elected official of his time and ran against 48 candidates over the course of his tenure.

Walter was also a savvy businessman, owning and operating a furniture store and auction, gaming machines, coal mines, and was part-owner of the Pikeville Motel and more.

With his charisma, wit, and keen knowledge, people were naturally drawn to him. People loved to converse and “shoot the bull” with him, and he always had something to say. He once said, “I was elected in 1957 and defeated in 1977 - in flood years - that’s what I call being washed in and washed out.”

He was often referred to as “Big Tony, ” and lovingly, by his family, as “Wawa.”

After retiring at the young age of 45, he and his wife Gloria moved to Florida to begin a whole new adventure. He still drew people in and gained a new nickname, “The Mayor, ” by his friends and neighbors. He loved his family and relished in the next generations. He is missed by his family, friends, neighbors, Facebook friends and all that have come to know his gentle, loving soul for he was one of a kind.

A celebration of Walter’s life was held at his home and a portion of his ashes were spread on the lake where he lived. The remaining ashes will be spread in the mountains of Pike County, the place he dearly loved, when Gloria, Roger, Gail and Beverly come to Pikeville to attend the Pikeville High School 100th anniversary reunion, July 30-August 1.

Mattie Durham

Mattie M. Durham, 56, of Hardy, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at the Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center, South Williamson.

She was born in Pike County, March 28, 1959, the daughter of the late Kelly Baisden and Nell Baisden.

She was a homemaker and a member of Huntleyville Gospel Revelation, Martin County.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Durham; five children, Larry Michael Durham (Kimberly), Burl Marcum (Rebecca), Terry Picklesimer (Sara), Bobbie Jean Durham and Debbie Marcum; two brothers, Donnie Baisden and Harrison Baisden; one sister, Helen Pinion; and seven grandchildren, Abigail, Jacob, Patricia, Tommy, Matthew, Ryan and Isabella.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6, in the Huntleyville Gospel Revelation Church, with burial following in the Peco Hollow Cemetery, Belfry. Arrangements are under direction of Lucas & Son Funeral Home of Pikeville.

Visitation is at the church with special services at 7 p.m. Friday.

Jackie Francis

Jackie Keith Francis II, 28, of McAndrews, died Tuesday morning, June 2, 2015, at his home, following a

lingering illness.

He was born in South Williamson, March 27, 1987, the son of Jackie Keith and JoAnn Dingess Francis of McAndrews.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Amanda Francis of McAndrews; his grandparents, Curtis and Sarah Dingess of Goodman, W.Va.; his fiancee, Stephanie Suter; and a host of other loving family and friends.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Arrangements are under direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry.
