Hettie Messer Lucas
Hettie Messer Lucas, 78, of Garrett, died Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital in Martin.
Born February 5, 1925, in Wayland, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Ada Hicks Knox. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Baptist Church at Salt Lick.
She is survived by her husband, Elder Chester Lucas.
Other survivors include four sons, Larry Wayne Shipley of Garrett, Vandell Shipley (Carla) of Dowheic, Michigan, Arthur Jack Shipley (Christa) of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Ron Lucas (Paula) of Shreveport, Louisiana; two daughters, Wanda Anderson (Ravin) of Kite; and Twilla Frasure (Martin) of Hindman; three brothers, Earnest Knox, Arvin Knox, and Arnold Ray Knox, all of Kendallville, Indiana; three sisters, Hattie Hicks and Bertha Mae Compton, both of Kendallville, Indiana; and Brenda Faye Conley of Jackson, Mississippi; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Coet Messer, and five brothers, Burnis Knox, Curtis Knox, Otis Knox, Anthony Wayne Knox and one infant; and one sister, Maudie Cordial.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 6, at 11 a.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin, with United Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.
Visitation is at the funeral home, with services held nightly at 7 p.m.

Cecil Bert Hall
Cecil Bert Hall, age 65, of Ivel, husband of Marlene Hall, passed away, Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg.
He was born March 29, 1938, in Banner, the son of the late Charlie Hall and Alice Hall. He was an oil distributor for CB Hale Heating Oil Company, and was a member of the Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, at Ivel.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jimmy Neff Hall of Winchester.
Funeral services for Cecil Bert Hall will be conducted Saturday, September 6, at 11 a.m., at the Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church, at Ivel, with Clergymen Chuck Ferguson and James Harmon officiating.
Burial will follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation is at the funeral home, and after 10 a.m., Saturday, at the church.

Robert L. Bays
Robert L. Bays of 122 Taylor St., Findlay, Ohio, died Thursday, August 28, 2003, at his residence.
He was born December 29, 1937, the son of the late Joseph and Eunice Wright Bays.
In 1971 he retired from Centrex Corporation, where he worked as a machine operator and truck driver. He formerly belonged to Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2118, and Disabled American Veterans Buddy Chapter No. 43.
Bob married Dorothy L. Gibson in 1956, and they later divorced.
He is survived by one son, David Marshall of Dahlonega Georgia; three daughters, Tammy S. (William A.) Metzger of Findlay, Ohio, Deborah L. Bays of Ellijay, Georgia, and Ginger R. (Nathan B.) Dirmeyer of Dunkirk; and three sisters, Okie (Dale) Dillon of Findlay, Ohio, JoAnn (Bob) Akers of Prestonsburg, and Barbara Breeding of Dallas, Texas; and grandchildren, Greg and Paul Bays, Holly, Austin, and Dustin Duvall, and Quinton Dirmeyer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dennis Bays.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 2, at 11 a.m., in the Pentecostal Church of God, 1701 Blanchard Ave., Findlay, Ohio, with pastor John Faisant officiating.
Bob was loved and will be sadly missed by his children, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial may be given to donors choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Colden-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay, Ohio.
Visitation was at the church.

Flossie Hall McGuire
Flossie Hall McGuire, 89, of Prestonsburg, died Monday, September 1, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born Feburary 17, 1914, on Johns Creek (Floyd County), she was the daughter of the late Willie R. Hall and Ella Burchett Hall. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Hobert McGuire.
Other survivors include one daughter, Ella Elizabeth McGuire of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Louella Buskirk of Inez, and Geneva Perry of Tampa, Florida; one half-brother, Albert Lee Hall of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Emma Juanita Burchett of Lexington, Jeffery Hobert Burchett (Nancy) of London, Marla Ann Zondervan (Dan) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Mary Elizabeth Burchett of Lexington; three great-grandchildren, Devon Elizabeth Burchett, Erika Paige Burchett and Cody Perkins of Prestonsburg.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 3, at 2 p.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. Jim Sherman officiating.
Burial will be at Richmond Memorial Cemetery, Prestons-burg.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Jeff Burchett, Harold Randell Buskirk, Bill Music, Kimber McGuire, Frank McGuire Jr., and William Kendrick.
Carter Funeral Home is serving the McGuire Family.

Gustava Dean Alley
Gustava Dean Alley, age 85, of Trenton, Michigan, formerly of Grethel, wife of Edward Alley, passed away Friday, August 29, 2003, in the Applewood Nursing Home, Trenton Michigan.
She was born February 23, 1918, in Harold, the daughter of the late Henry Moore and Nannie Hunter Moore. She was a member of the Little Ida Old Regular Baptist Church, Ecorse, Michigan. She was owner and operator of Alley Grocery Store, Ecorse, Michigan, for 16 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Ronald (Carol) Alley of St. Paul Minnesota and Gary (Icie Marie) Alley of Lincoln Park, Michigan; one daughter, Phyllis (Richard) Nemeth of Trenton, Michigan; one brother, Henry (Kathryn) Moore Jr., of Whitley City; seven grandchildren, Richard and Jenifer Nemeth, Samantha and Scott Olson, Jason and Jenifer Nemeth, and Hugh Alley, and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Gustava Dean Alley were conducted Tuesday, September 2, at 11 a.m., at the Pilgrim Home Regular Baptist Church, at Grethel, with Elisha Branham, Ralph Caudill and Arvid Blevins officiating.
Burial was in the Lee Alley Cemetery, at Grethel, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the funeral home.
Pallbearers: Ron Alley, Gary Alley, Richard Nemeth, Rick Nemeth, Phil Riggs, Michael Martin, Andy Martin, and Carmel Newman.
Honorary: Gil Bolton.

Rhoda Jane Herald Hall
Rhoda Jane Herald Hall, 44, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, August 31, 2003, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital
Born December 7, 1958, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Arnold (Tige) and Phyllis Hyden Herald. She was a campground supervisor at Jenny Wiley State Park in Prestonsburg, and a member of the Cow Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Gregory Hall.
Other survivors include one daughter, Brandie Lowe of Prestonsburg; two step-daughters, Amanda Bailey of Ivel and Robin Burchett of Martin; one brother, John Herald of Paintsville; one sister, Clora (Sissy) Morgan of Prestonsburg; and grandchildren, Madison Lowe, Blake Lowe and Mason Burchett.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 3, at 11 a.m., at the Cow Creek Freewill Baptist Church, with Nathan Lafferty officiating.
Burial will be in the Hyden Cemetery in West Prestonsburg, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Active pallbearers: Ralph Frazier, Trint Combs, Roy Compton, Gerald Clark, Mike Conn and Stevie Little.

Myrtle Burchett
Myrtle Burchett, 85, of Prestonsburg, died Sunday, August 31, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born February 2, 1918, at Bays Branch (Floyd County), she was the daughter of the late Elmer Burchett and Lula Horn Burchett. She was a retired teacher from the Floyd County school system, having taught for 36 years.
Survivors include one sister, Goldia Burchett of Prestonsburg, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 3, at 11 a.m., at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel, Prestonsburg, with Rev. John Boyd officiating.
Interment will be at Richmond Cemetery, Prestonsburg.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Carter Funeral Home is serving the Burchett family.
Active pallbearers: Donnie Baldridge, Ernie Baldridge, Robbie Kestner, Todd Miller, Jason Roberds, Jeff Roberds, Tony Skeans, Matthew Skeans, and Scott Walker.

Virgil E. Triplett
Virgil E. Triplett, 80, of Bevinsville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Born February 15, 1923, in Wayland, he was the son of the late Robert Allen and Elizabeth Mosley Triplett. He was a retired school teacher, a U.S. Army World War II veteran, and a life member of D.A.V. Chapter 128, at Garrett.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Hall Triplett.
Other survivors include two sons, Craig Triplett and Chris Triplett (Mary), both of Bevinsville; five daughters, Beverly Meade, Felicia Crank (Rusty) and Melissa Branham, all of Bevinsville, Kathleen Triplett of Ashland, and Penny Cook (Jason) of Lexington; four step-daughters, Elliouse Branham (Laryl) of Wheelwright, Evelena Osborne (Stewart) of Prestonsburg, Pauline Smith (Mike) of Bevinsville, Patricia Burke (Ronald) of Weeksbury; a brother, Eyvind Triplett of Bevinsville; three sisters, Juanita Slone of Van Lear, Emogene Combs of Topmost, and Beulah Anderson of Bevinsville; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, friends and students.
In addition to his parents, his first wife, Opal Meade Triplett, and his second wife, Marie Moore Triplett, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Homer and Willie Triplett; two sisters, Melda Messer and Wyona Mullins; and a grandson, Brandon.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 30, at 1 p.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church, with Louis Ferrari, Ellis Holbrook and Monroe Jones, officiating.
Burial was in the Mullins-Triplett Family Cemetery (Jacks Creek) at Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church, with services being held nightly.
Active pallbearers: Laryl Branham, Mike Smith, Jason Cook, Rusty Crank, John Meade, John Lee Hall, Adam Branham, Tony Branham, Marty Johnson, Brian Meade, and Justin Hall.
