Harry Conn, age 83, of Martin, died Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at the McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born February 19, 1919, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Columbus and Polly Ann Conn. He was a retired coal miner, member of UMWA Local Union No. 9845, and a member of the Church of God, at Dwale.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Kilburn Conn.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Eugene Conn of Endicott, and R.B. Conn of Martin; two daughters, Fayetta Samons of Drift, and Doris Pitts of Martin; a brother, Rexford Conn of Floyd County; two sisters, Ida Ann Meade of Printer and Martha Belle Holthouse of Garrett; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Albert Conn; six brothers, Levi Conn, Jim Conn, B.R. Conn, Fred Conn, Wilmer Conn and Sammy Conn; and four sisters, Hattie Kilburn, Elizabeth Crum, Vernetta Amburgey and Letha Humble.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 1, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Woody Crum and Phillip Meade officiating.
Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Johnie Sparkman
Johnie Sparkman Jr., age 58, of Hueysville, husband of Lillian Allen Sparkman, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at the Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville.
He was born January 25, 1945, in Hueysville, the son of Johnie Sparkman of Hueysville, and the late Ranie Mae Shepherd Sparkman. He was a coal miner, formerly employed by Inco Coal Company.
In addition to his wife, and father, he is survived by two brothers, Burnis Sparkman and Paul Edward Sparkman, both of Waterloo, Indiana, and one sister, Dulcine Petty, of Angola, Indiana.
Funeral services for Johnie Sparkman Jr., will be conducted Saturday, February 1, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home Chapel, Martin, with Clergyman Jerry Manns officiating.
Burial will follow in the Press Shepherd Cemetery, at Hueys-ville, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, at Martin.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Billy J. “Big Bill” Robinson
Billy J. “Big Bill” Robinson, 67, of Langley, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born July 28, 1935, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late John and Hollie Reynolds Robinson. He was a disabled heavy equipment operator for Martin County Coal and Peres Processing.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Marlene Hughes Robinson, of Langley.
Other survivors include two sons, Timothy Joe Robinson of Eastern, and Barry Robinson of Langley; two daughters, Genevieve Williams and Lori Delisa Fields, both of Langley; two brothers, Clarence Ray Robinson of Langley, and Tommy Robinson of Wayland; a sister, Bridgette Lovins of Langley; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry David Robinson; two brothers, Carl Edward Robinson and Ricky Dean Robinson; and a sister, Louise Lumpkins.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 31, at 1 p.m., at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Taulbee Goodman and Malcolm Slone officiating.
Burial will be in the Hughes Family Cemetery, at Hueysville.
Visitation is at the funeral home, where nightly services were held.
Mary Belle Goble Hall
Mary Belle Goble Hall, 89, of Prestonsburg, died Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1913, in Emma, she was the daughter of the late George and Sally Hubbard Goble. She was a homemaker and a member of the Light of Christ Church, in Paintsville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Hall.
Survivors include three sons, George Hall of Middletown, Indiana, Willie Hall of Anderson, Indiana, and James Charles Hall of Prestonsburg; four daughters, Cathy Crabtree of Columbus, Ohio, Minnie Lewis and Sally Jarrell, both of Prestonsburg, and Christine Holland of Salyersville; two brothers, Jesse Goble of Dwale, and Sammy Goble of Mansfield, Ohio; two sisters, Ruth Branham and Tommy Elizabeth Shepherd, both of Dwale; 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
In addtion to her parents, and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Roy Eugene Hall; four brothers, Loie Goble, High Goble, Charlie Goble, and Everett Goble; and two sisters, Susan Spears and Exie Lafferty.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 29, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, in Martin, with Jr. Hayton and Sammy Hamilton officiating.
Burial will be in the Burchett Cemetery, at Cow Creek, Prestonsburg.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Lillie Mae Newsome
Lillie Mae Newsome, age 68, of Hi Hat, widow of Robert Newsome passed away Monday, January 27, 2003, at her daughter’s residence in Wheelwright.
She was born April 1, 1934, in Beaver, the daughter of the late Riley Newsome and Ettie Newsome.
Survivors include three sons, Willie Hall of Ligon, Randy Eugene Pegrem of West Virginia, and Melvin Adams Jr. of McDowell; three daughters, Geneva Pegrem of Ligon, Nora Lou Hall of Galveston, and Betty Lou Slone of Wheelwright; six step-children; one brother, Riley Newsome Jr. of Price; seven grandchildren, Lou Tackett, Josh Slone, Char Adams, Areil Adams, Stephanie Slone, Dokota Adams and Jessica Slone.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Milford Newsome; and two sisters, Elvie Hall and Rosie Henson.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 31, at 11 a.m., at the Samaria Regular Baptist Church, in Teaberry, with Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hamilton Cemetery, in Teaberry, under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin.
Mary L. Wagner
Mary L. Wagner, 62, of Wheelwright, died Friday, January 24, 2003, at her residence.
Born September 16, 1940, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Northen and Nora Alice Hall Little. She was a retired ward clerk for St. Joseph Hospital, and was a member of the Wheelwright United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Wagner and Tim Eads both of Wheelwright; two sisters, Pamela Krejic and Sue Bigalow, both of Lexington; five grandchildren, Britni Wagner, Justin Eads, Autumn Eads, Ryan Eads and Parker Eads; a brother-in-law, Homer Osborne; and nieces and nephew, Teresa Bowling, Carla Smith, Sandy Daniels and Gerald Osborne.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Osborne, Alpha Jean Workman and Willa Mae Little.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 27, at 1 p.m., at the Wheelwright United Methodist Church at Wheelwright, with Bobby Isaac officiating.
Burial was in the Hall-Little Cemetery at Wheelwright, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin.
Visitation was at the church.
Lavilla “Aileen” Campbell
Lavilla “Aileen” Campbell, age 64, of Allen, passed away Monday, January 27, 2003, after an extended illness.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Campbell.
Other survivors include her mother, Beulah Delong of Allen; three daughters, Gail Sheridan of Arlington, Virginia, Sheila Setser of Prestonsburg, Sandy Donahoe of Allen; one sister, Opal Boggs of Ashtabula, Ohio; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Estill Delong; one daughter, Lynn Campbell Tussey, and her sister, Rena Vanderpool.
Aileen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and daughter.
She was a member of the Amvets Post 27 Ladies Auxillary and was the owner of Aileen’s Floral and Hobby. She worked many years at the Beaver Valley Hospital, Prestonsburg General Hospital, and Our Lady of the Way Hospital, as a nurse’s aid and respiratory therapist.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 30, at Hall Funeral Home, in Martin, with burial to follow in the Davidson Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers are: Dan Sheridan, William Tussey, Randy Donahoe, Tim Setser, Winson Lee Slone, and Nathan Tussey.
Bessie Patton
Bessie Patton, 86, of Manton, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Our Lady of the Way Hospital, Martin, following an extended illness.
Born on November 22, 1914, in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Taylor and Martha Hale Layne. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elick Patton.
Survivors include two sons, Alick Patton of Columbus, Indiana, Everet Earl Patton of Manton; two daughters, Lorene Salisbury of Ivel, Rose Wohlford of Martin; two brothers, Charlie Layne of Indiana, Bert Layne of Eastern; four sisters, Hazel Firesheet of New Orleans, Louisiana, Emogene Miller of Indiana, Irene Hughes and Georgia Francis Layne, both of Martin; 26 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 19, at 1 p.m., at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Gary Allen officiating.
Burial was in the Hale Cemetery, at Manton.
