Andy Bolen
Andy Bolen, 79, of Prestons-burg, and widower of Mabel Bolen, died Sunday, October 7, 2001, at the Highlands Regional Medical Center.
He was born June 29, 1922, at Bolyn, Ky., the son of the late Reece and Nancy (Conley) Bolen. He was a retired oil and gas driller, formerly employed by Kinzer Drilling; a member of James W. Alley Masonic Lodge at Wayland; and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Porter of Prestonsburg; one brother, Robert Bolen of Garrett; and two sisters, Geraldine Ramey of LaGrange, In., and Maxine Gibson of Willard, Ohio.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 11, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Burke Funeral Home chapel, with Brother Jimmie Hall, Sterlin Bolen, Bethel Bolen, Jerry Manns, Hayes Chaffins, Monroe Jones and Clifford Williams officiating.
Burial followed in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.
Visitation was at the Burke Funeral Home, Prestonsburg.
All arrangements were under the direction of Burke Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers: Garth Bolen, Earnest Gordon Bolen, Reece J. Combs, Gordon Moore, James Moore, and Rodney Bolen.

Leonard Clark
Leonard Clark, age 47, of Honaker, Ky., passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at the University of Kentucky Hospital, Lexington, Ky., following a brief illness.
He was born December 30, 1953, in Pikeville, Ky., the son of Claude E. Clark and Madeline Case Clark of Honaker, Ky. He was a former coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Steve Clark of Honaker, Ky.; one brother, Sammie Clark of Hillsboro, Ohio, and one sister, Bulavene Hall of Harold, Ky.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 20, 2001, at 11:00 a.m., at the Hall Funeral Home chapel, Martin, Ky., with the clergymen, Tommy Spears and Bennie Blankenship, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Clark Cemetery, Honaker, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the funeral home.

Hobert Burke
Hobert Burke, 67, of Bevins-ville, Ky., died Tuesday, October 16, 2001, following an extended illness.
Born on November 18, 1933, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of the late Silas Burke and Goldie Johnson Burke. He was a general laborer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eura Lou Hall Burke, on February 6, 2001.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Wayne Burke, Roy Dean Burke, and John Paul Burke, all of Bevinsville, Ky.; one daughter, Tammy Wonette Burke of Belcher, Ky.; two brothers, Homer Burke and Silas Burke Jr., both of Bevinsville, Ky.; one sister, Virble Jean Spears of Bevinsville, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Scott Burke, Roy Silas Burke, and Alicia Burke.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Fern Burke and one brother, Noble Burke.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 19, 2001, at 1 p.m., at the Little Rock Old Regular Baptist Church at Bevinsville, Ky., with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Silas Burke Cemetery, Bevinsville, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the church.

Grace Triplett Jacobs
Grace Triplett Jacobs, “Granny Jacobs, ” 81, of Hi Hat, Ky., died Tuesday, October 16, 2001, following an extended illness.
Born on February 12, 1920, in Knott County, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Clarenda Jacobs Triplett. She was a homemaker and a member of the Enterprise Old Regular Baptist Church in Pike County, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Jacobs.
Survivors include two sons, Clard Jacobs of Lexington, Ky., Kermit Jacobs of Saginaw, Mich.; five daughters, Eva Little and Joyce Little, both of Melvin, Ky., Pam Hall of Price, Ky., Debbie Shope of Lexington, Ky., Brandy Hopkins of Minnie, Ky.; five brothers, Sid Triplett of Somerset, Ky., Irvin Triplett of Hollybush, Ky., Jerry Triplett, Steve Triplett, and Oliver Triplett, all of Saint Marys, Ohio; four sisters, Joy Donavon and Mary Slone, both of Somerset, Ky., Mazie Slone of Hollybush, Ky., Jane Howell of Saint Marys, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three children and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, October 19, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Little Nancy Old Regular Baptist Church at Price, Ky., with ministers of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating.
Burial will be in the Buckingham Cemetery, at Bevinsville, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation is at the Church.

Vernon Akers
Vernon Akers, 62, of McDowell, Ky., died Sunday, October 14, 2001, following an extended illness.
Born on February 18, 1939, at Ligon, Ky., he was the son of the late Noah Akers and Lizzie Wallen Akers. He was a disabled laborer, a member of the First Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky., a member of the Lion’s Club, and a cook at the Slone Mt. Squirrel Festival.
He is survived by his wife, Freda Stumbo Akers.
Other survivors include two sons, Vernon Eugene Akers of Channahon, Ill., James David Akers of Channahon Ill.; one step-son, Terry Osborne of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one daughter, Candina Renee Phillips of Clarksville, Tenn.; one brother, Noah Carson Akers of McDowell, Ky.; four sisters, Freeda Tackett of Eastern, Ky., Margie Gore of Knoxville, Tenn., Carolyn Wright of Lexington, Ky., Marilyn Newsome of McDowell, Ky. and 11 grandchildren, Amber Babcock, Neil Babcock, Kevin Akers, Zachary Akers, Megan Akers, Derrick Akers, David James Akers, (D.J.) Austin Akers, Madison Phillips, Brandyn Osborne, and Taylor Osborne.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Nora Jane Akers McCoy
Funeral services will be conducted (today) Wednesday, October 17, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky.
Burial will be in the Lucy Hall Cemetery, McDowell, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the First Baptist Church at McDowell, Ky.
Serving as the pallbearers for the funeral of Vernon Akers were Jim (Bimbo) Akers, Greg Hamilton, Jay Hamilton, Dewayne Hamilton, Tony Tackett, Nick Moore, David Wright, Dan Newsome, Derrick Akers, and Brandyn Akers.
Honorary pallbearers were: Egory Mullins, Harold Tedrick, Denver Paige, Curt Hall, Ike Rhodes, James Gore, Roger Tackett, M. Ray Allen, Mike Wright, Mike McCoy, Roger Dean Tackett, Rick Oliver, Rick Caudill, Dennis Whithead, Tommy McCoy, and Roy Tackett.

James Christopher (Jamie) Maynard
James Christopher (Jamie) Maynard, 17, of Melvin, Ky., died Friday, October 12, 2001, following an automobile accident.
Born on September 27, 1984, at Pikeville, Ky., he was the son of Kathy Newsome Maynard and the late James Robert Maynard. He was a senior at South Floyd High School.
He is survived by his aunts and uncles, Ronnie Newsome, Wayne and Gina Newsome, and Lenny and Ruth Newsome, all of Melvin, Ky.; Geraldine and Billy Meade and Priscilla and Tommy Bevins, all of Pike County; his maternal grandmother, Emmogene Johnson Newsome of Melvin, Ky., and the late Darling Newsome; and paternal grandmother, Jeanette Johnson Maynard of Pike County, and the late Andy Maynard.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Andrew Maynard; and one sister, Christina Lynn Maynard.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 16, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. Louis Ferrari and Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating.
Burial was in the Newsome Cemetery, Melvin, Ky., under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church.

Stella Margarett Poston
Stella Margarett Poston, age 48, of Flat Gap, Ky., formerly of McDowell, Ky., wife of Henry Miles Poston, passed away Friday, October 12, 2001, in the Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Ky.
She was born August 13, 1953, in Detroit, Mi., the daughter of Alene Hall Springer, of Marion, Oh., and the late William Jasper Springer. She was a member of the Spurlock Church of Christ, Printer, Ky., and a housewife.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, Henry Miles Poston Jr. of Whittensville, Ky. and John Paul Poston of Flat Gap, Ky.; two brothers, Clinton Dean Springer of McDowell, Ky. and William Springer Jr. of Marion, Oh.
Funeral services for Stella Margarett Poston were conducted Monday, October 15, 2001, at 1:00 p.m., at the Little Rosa Regular Baptist Church, McDowell, Ky., with the clergymen Richard Bowens and Bruce Coleman officiating.
Burial followed in the Newman Cemetery, Hi Hat, Ky., under the professional care of the Hall Funeral Home, Martin, Ky.
Visitation was at the church.
Pallbearers: Dennis White-head, Rick Moore, Clinton Springer, Clinton Ray Springer, Drexel Springer, Billy Springer, Tracy Hall and Rex Hall.
