COFFMAN, EDWARD SCOTT

Edward Scott Coffman, a gunsmith, drowned Saturday in a boating accident at Fourchon Beach in Port Fourchon. He was 46. Mr. Coffman was born in Kenner and lived in Metairie. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Millwright Local No. 1931. Survivors include his mother, Berniece Coffman; two brothers, Lester and Chris Coffman; and a sister, Adele Coffman Ippolito. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at L.A. Muhleisen and Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m.

LaPORTE, CARMELITE ABADIE

Carmelite Abadie LaPorte, a homemaker, died Tuesday at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center. She was 89. Mrs. LaPorte was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Parish and Altar Society and Redemptorist Seminary Guild, and was a volunteer for the Blessed Francis X. Seelos Canonization Committee. Survivors include four sons, the Rev. Gerard B., Kenneth A., James E. and Arthur V. LaPorte Jr.; a daughter, Therese LaPorte Bensen; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at St. Mary's Assumption Church, 2030 Constance St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1. Leitz-Egan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

TERRANOVA, PETER JOSEPH JR.
06/08/02

Peter Joseph Terranova Jr., an employee of Delta Airlines for 28 years, died May 30 of cancer at the Cancer Treatment Center in Tulsa, Okla. He was 53. Mr. Terranova was born in Lake Charles and lived in Jefferson for many years and in Bedford, Texas. He graduated from Rummel High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the Bronze Star Expert-Rifle. He was also an artist and poet. Survivors include his wife, Candace A. Carlson Terranova; his father, Peter Joseph Terranova Sr. of Ponchatoula; his mother, Angelina Guercia Terranova of Ponchatoula; two brothers, Victor Paul Terranova Sr. of Slidell and Andrew Michael Terranova Sr.; and two sisters, Jo Anne T. Smith and Angelina Marie T. Martinez, both of Ponchatoula. A memorial service will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Dallas Fort Worth Airport Marriott, North.

PETERS, LUCILLE ROMAN

Lucille Roman Peters, a homemaker, died Friday at Memorial Medical Center. She was 89. Mrs. Peters was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, Herman Peters; two daughters, Diane Peters Tyson and Bernice Rain of Los Angeles; and eight grandchildren. A Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6828 Chef Menteur Highway. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

BOURG, MADELINE LEBLANC

Mrs. Madeline LeBlanc Bourg, a homemaker, died Sunday at Kenner Regional Medical Center. She was 80. She was born in Morganza, lived in Harahan for 50 years and in LaPlace for the past 16 years. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Bourg; three daughters, Elaine Bourg, Kathy LaBorde and Loretta Arceneaux; a brother, Leroy LeBlanc; two sisters, Doris Landry and Frances Blanchard; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass was said Wednesday at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

SHEDRICK, VIOLA DOROTHY LUSK

Viola Dorothy Lusk Shedrick, a retired teacher, died Wednesday of a heart attack at Metropolitan Hospice. She was 96. Mrs. Shedrick was born in Livonia and lived in New Orleans for many years. She attended McKinley High School and Xavier University. She taught at Joseph A. Craig Elementary School, sold real estate for J.W. Stroughter and Associates and was district manager at Keystone Insurance and Majestic Life Insurance Co. She was an honorary member of the board of directors at Majestic Mortuary Services. She was a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. Survivors include a daughter, Marie S. Brown; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 1923 St. Philip St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Majestic Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

CARTER, RENARD JOSEPH JR.
06/15/02

Renard Joseph Carter Jr., a kitchen helper, died June 6 at Charity Hospital of multiple gunshot wounds. He was 20. Mr. Carter was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Frederick Douglass High School. He worked at Mike Anderson's Seafood Restaurant. Survivors include his companion, Tameka Matthews; a son, Renard Joseph Carter III; a daughter, Re'ion Carter; his father, Renard Joseph Carter Sr.; his mother, Delores Johnson Singleton; a stepfather, Maurice Singleton; a brother, Michael Carter; three sisters, Chequila, Renell and Delores Carter; and his grandparents, Joseph and Audrey Carter. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church, 1925 Ursulines Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Holt Cemetery. Tilly's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

FAGAN, CECILIA MULLEN

Cecilia Mullen Fagan, a cook, died Sunday of a stroke at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 67. Mrs. Fagan was born in Lutcher and lived in Metairie for the past 40 years. She was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Luther Fagan; three sons, Michael, Norman and Luther James Fagan; a daughter, Alice Fagan; three sisters, Leonna Tyler of Los Angeles, Jean Lee and Theodora Mullen; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 900 Cambronne St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BOUTERIE, NINET DIVITA

Ninet DiVita Bouterie, a retired sales associate at Sears, died Wednesday at Slidell Memorial Hospital. She was 79. Mrs. Bouterie was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She had worked at Sears for 25 years. Mrs. Bouterie was a parishioner of St. Maria Goretti Church and a member of the Avalons. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Bouterie Vendetti; a sister, Marie DiVita Marrero; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park Cemetery.

WHITEHEAD, ALICE BOATWRIGHT
05/29/02

Alice Boatwright Whitehead, a homemaker and volunteer, died Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. She was 87. Mrs. Whitehead was born in Wilmington, N.C., and lived in New Orleans for many years until moving to Williamsburg. In New Orleans, she had been a member of many historical and charitable organizations. She was a board member of the National Society of Colonial Dames in Louisiana, a former president of the board of directors of St. Anna's Home, and a member of the Christian Women's Exchange and the Orleans Club. Survivors include a son, Allen H. Whitehead Jr.; a sister, Anne Humphrey of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held in Williamsburg at a later date. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Services is handling arrangements.

Joseph Beach, FBI agent, businessman

Joseph DePaul Beach Sr., a former minor league baseball player, FBI agent and businessman, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans. He was 89.
Mr. Beach was born in New Orleans and lived in Metairie for the past 50 years. He graduated from Holy Cross High School in New Orleans in 1931. And in 1935, he earned a bachelor of science degree in foreign commerce from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
He played football, basketball and baseball while in high school and college, including a trip to the American Legion junior baseball world series in 1929 with the New Orleans White Sox. After college, he played for the New Orleans Pelicans, a minor league baseball team.
Mr. Beach served as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1942 to 1946, working from New York City, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Grand Rapids, Mich. He was a partner with two brothers in Beach Bros. Furniture Co. And he operated his own business, Airline Finance Co.
Mr. Beach also unsuccessfully ran for Jefferson Parish sheriff in 1964.
"He would tell us to make the most of every minute," said Marie Cossè, his daughter. "He was very inspirational, always upbeat. He had a lot of different, varied interests. He just lived life robust."
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and the Diamond Club of Greater New Orleans, which inducted him into its baseball hall of fame in 1985.
He also was a member of the men's club at St. Mary's Dominican High School in New Orleans. And he was active at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Metairie, where he helped organize the men's club, led the Cub Scouts and served as a commentator and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.
Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Guilbault Beach of Metairie; two daughters, Marie Cossè of Chalmette and Marguerite "Peggy" Ronzello of Covington; two sons, Joe Beach Jr. of Metairie and Peter C. Beach of Mandeville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be said today at 12:30 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 105 Bonnabel Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MATTERN, LOUISE PORTA
05/28/02

Louise Porta Mattern , a homemaker, died Monday at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. She was 92. Mrs. Mattern was born in St. James Parish and lived in St. Bernard Parish for the past 35 years. Survivors include a son, Robert Mattern; a daughter, Yvonne Steinke; a sister, Florence St. Pierre; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at noon at Vickers, Verrette and Dornan Funeral Home, 3027 Jean Lafitte Parkway, Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

GERRETS, LAURA MARIE CERNIGLIA

Laura Marie Cerniglia Gerrets, a homemaker and former co-owner of Champion Machine Works, died Sunday of renal failure at her daughter's home. She was 96. She was a parishioner of St. Dominic Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons, John A. Gerrets and Joseph A. Duplessis; two daughters, Patricia G. Ortlip and Janis M. Gerrets; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A Mass was said, and burial was in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
