Mary Carl Taylor '22, May 5, 1999, in Camden, Maine, at 99. She taught at Bingham High School, North Anson Academy and Wiscasset Academy in Maine. Survivors include her daughter, Doris Taylor Huber '45, five granddaughters, including Jean Huber Edmondson '80, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth Jameson Robinson '23, April 1, 1999, in Vernon, Conn., at 98. She was a registered nurse employed for 20 years by Manchester (Conn.) Memorial Hospital. Predeceased by her husband, Chester L. Robinson '22, she is survived by a son, Willard L. Robinson, a brother, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Melva Mann Farnum '23, March 17, 1999, in Portland, Maine, at 98. A teacher, she moved to Japan in 1927 with her missionary husband, Marlin D. Farnum '23, who predeceased her. A volunteer at Immanuel Baptist Church and Maine Medical Center in Portland, she played piano for musical events. She is survived by three daughters, Hilda Farnum Nicoll '49, Elizabeth F. Hummer and Rosemary F. Gilson, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Paul W. Gates '24, January 5, 1999, in Oakland, Calif., at 97. He was an authority on the American West and U.S. public land policies and an ardent conservationist. The author of several books, he taught at Cornell University from 1936 until his retirement in 1971. Predeceased by his brothers Gordon '19 and Edwin '22, he is survived by his second wife, Olive Lee Gates '27, a son and three daughters, 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Doris Dewar Hunt '26, April 5, 1999, in New Canaan, Conn., at 94. A homemaker, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert C. Hunt '27. Survivors include her daughter, Joan Hunt Banfield '47.
Clarence R. McLaughlin '26, April 15, 1999, in Augusta, Maine, at 94. He practiced medicine in Bucksport and Gardiner, Maine, until 1966 and also served as president of the Gardiner Savings Institution. Predeceased by two wives and his daughter, Sylvia McLaughlin deJong '54, he is survived by a daughter, Francis (Sally) Johnson, five grandchildren, including Elizabeth Johnson '85, and five great-grandchildren.
Helen Kyle Swan '26, April 26, 1999, in Kingston, Mass., at 93. She was active in historical societies and other civic organizations. She is survived by a daughter, Priscilla Pecor, a son, Alan G. Swan, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Marjorie G. Dunstan '27, May 1, 1999, in Honolulu, Hawaii, at 95. She was a long-time teacher at Punahou School and at Mid-Pacific Institute in Hololulu. She is survived by her nephew, John P. Dunstan '60.
Marie Holmes Ray '27, May 18, 1999, in Randolph, Mass., at 91. A World War II veteran, she was the owner, editor and reporter of the Bridgewater (Mass.) Independent newspaper for 38 years until she retired in 1985. Predeceased by her husband, Kenneth B. Ray, she leaves no known relatives.
Myrtle Main Sherman '27, March 23, 1999, in Augusta, Maine, at 95. She studied at the University of Maine, McGill, Harvard and the Sorbonne after graduating from Colby, and for 36 years she taught at Maine Central Institute and Cape Elizabeth High School. Her husband, Ernest Healy Sherman, predeceased her. Several cousins survive.
