Homer Lee Gullett

Homer Lee Gullett of Lansing, went home to the Lord Jan. 18, 2007 surrounded by those who loved him at his home. Born May 26, 1926 in Harrod, Ohio, he was raised in southeastern Kentucky and considered it home.

There he met his childhood sweetheart. They married Sept. 21, 1944 and renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary. Having worked in a CCC Camp during the Depression, he first came to Michigan in 1940. Working as a coal miner through the birth of his first two children, moved to Michigan for good in the late 40's. He obtained factory work and retired after 31 years from General Motors. He was a union man all his life.

In the early 50's he learned the guitar and became an accomplished country singer. He performed for various functions including two radio shows he hosted out of Albion and Coldwater. He and his band were known then as, Smilin' Homer Lee & The Kentucky Rhythm Boys. He enjoyed singing right up to the end. In about 1950 he was instrumental in relocating Geneva's whole family to Michigan.

His word was his bond and his strength. Integrity and courage commanded respect and admiration of all who knew him. Yet he was tender hearted and enjoyed a good joke or laugh. He spoke of his Kentucky days often when life was less complicated, but he never tired of letting his family know how much he loved us. Whenever any of us needed help he was there. Whether it was money, time or a rock to stand on he was there. He always worked with the hope that he could make life easier and better for his children than it was for him. He had a great big heart but it just wore out. He is and will be missed.

He was predeceased by grandson, Brian Oliver.

Homer is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geneva (Napier); son, Kenneth (Mary); daughters, Linda (John) Keyhoe, Dawn (Mark) Van Port Fleet, Carol (Mikell) Schneckenberger and Chrystal (Bob Becker) Gullett; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
