Gaylord Hale

Gaylord Hale, 88, of Grand Ledge, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Hale was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Evart the son of Oliver and Minnie (Compton) Hale.

He was a self-made man of integrity and honesty who helped many people. In addition to being a National Acclaimed Horse Trainer, he was a member of the American Quarter Horse and American Haflinger Associations and Mule Assoc.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel in 1981 and second wife, Vida; sister, LaMoyne Shepherd; sister-in-law, Ruth Hamilton; and brother, Donald Hale in 2005.

Mr. Hale is survived by sister, Betty Shumaker of Charlotte; sisters-in-law, Edith Hale of Charlotte and Naomi E. Carver of Lansing; numerous nieces and nephews; best friends, Thomas and Claudine Kost; and friend and companion, Sally Brunette.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Rich Mitterling officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.

Anna M. Hall

Anna M. Hall, 82, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007. Ms. Hall was born Dec. 29, 1924 the daughter of Edward and Hazel Chamberlain.

Ms. Hall enjoyed bird watching, knitting, crocheting and taking care of the family farm in Homer.

She was preceded in death by first husband, Frank Hall; and son, Nelson Hall.

She is survived by her son, Frank (Ann) Hall of Charlotte; daughter-in-law, Jeanie Hall; sister, Cleo King of Litchfield; four granddaughters, Erin, Carrie, Andrea, and Cassie and two great-grandsons, Evan and Collin.

Visitation was held Jan.11. Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield.

Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Jimmy Hall

Jimmy Hall, age 53, died Thursday, November 1, 2007 in Springport. Jimmy was born, February 24, 1954 in Drift, KY the son of Arthur and Magaline (Newsome) Hall. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ethel Mae Adams.

He is survived by his brother, “Peanut” Elliott of Springport; 3 aunts, Ellen Arnold of Springport, Vinne Cooper, May (Will) Henson both of Indiana; 2 uncles, Dewey (Phyllis) Newsome of Kentucky, Estill (Thelma) Newsome of Springport; sister-in-law, Kathy (Greg) Moore of Springport; brother-in-law, Jerry Adams of Leslie; 3 nephews, Curtis, Michael and Christopher Moore and a special friend, Bruce Arnold.

The family received friends on Sunday, November 4, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. There was no service.

Doris Hall-Oteney

Doris L. Hall-Oteney, 93, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Charlotte and Olivet, passed away Monday, March 19, 2007 in Charlotte. Doris was born Oct.15, 1913, the daughter of Jakie and Minerva (Midling) Powers.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Geraldine Klaassen in 1980; twin granddaughters, Dawn and Denise Garity in 1978; first husband, Gerald "Bill" Hall; second husband, Claire Oteney; sister, Florence Allen; brother, Ernie Powers; and her step-mother (who raised her), Bertha Herd; and special friend, Fred Britten.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna (Leo) Miller of Charlotte, Kittie "Kay" (David) Garity of Bellevue, Sheryl (Pat) Davis of Indiana; three sons, Eldon (Sandy) Hall of Kokomo, Ind., Gaylord (Mary) Hall of Tipton, Ind. and Lynn (Gussie) Hall of Lansing; son-in-law, Leonard Klaassen of Hudsonville; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Arlene Powers.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 22 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Perry Cemetery, Brookfield Township. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of Doris Hall-Oteney.

Christine Halloran

Christine A. Halloran, 39, of Charlotte, passed away April 23, 2007. Ms. Halloran was born October 7, 1967 the daughter of Everett and Patrice (Rounds) Halloran.

Ms. Halloran worked as a Calculations Assistant for the State of Michigan Department of Treasury. She enjoyed the computer, playing cards, U of M and spending time on the beach at Lake Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents, R.G. and Gladys Rounds.

She is survived by her daughters, Heather Tillitson of Portland, Holly Tillitson and Hailey Porter of Charlotte; sisters, Kim Rounds and Stephanie Amos of Grand Ledge; nieces and nephews, Ashley (Rob), Tyler, Tara, Tori and Corrie; 2 great nephews, Devon and Braylen. A funeral service was held April 27, 2007 with Pastor Kristine Beckman officiating at Pray Funeral Home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to her children in care of Kim Rounds. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

F. Lucile Halsey

F. Lucile (Randolph) Halsey, known to her friends as Lucy, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007, at the age of 90, with her family at her side.

She was born in Ohio to Cora and Wellington Fitz Randolph. Lucile and her family moved to Michigan in the 1920’s.

In 1977 Lucile was appointed Eaton County Drain Commissioner, and subsequently elected to this office in 1980, serving the people of Eaton County until she retired in 1984. Mrs. Halsey served as a Deputy Drain Commissioner for 15 years prior to that. Keeping costs down for the farmers was always her concern and goal. She was the first elected female Drain Commissioner in Eaton County and the third in the state of Michigan. Lucile was a life member of the Michigan Drain Commissioners Association.

She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her love of flowers and her beautiful gardens, for the sunshine in her smile, her positive attitude and the wonderful afghans she crocheted. She had a special place in her heart for family and especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great granddaughter.

Lucile is survived by four daughters: Charmane Bridges of Vermontville, Arlys (Jim) Lewellyn and Shirley (Richard) Rann of Charlotte, and Mina Loraine Halsey of Portage; grandchildren, Kelly (Tom) Williams, Beth (Randy) Green, Barry (Tammy) Lewellyn, Tamara (Pat) Landry, Kirk (Cindy) Llewellyn, Renae (Steve) Bartlett, and Jennifer Horn; 16 great grandchildren and one on the way; plus one great-great granddaughter.

Lucile was a resident at Country Living Adult Foster Care near Olivet, owned by Judy and Manny Fuentes. She loved them and their family as if they were her own.

As she requested, her body has been donated to the Michigan State University Medical School for the advancement of medical science. She also requested there be no public service. Her family will gather privately to celebrate her life. Arrangements made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

For those who wish to, memorial contributions are suggested for the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse Museum. Checks may be made to Courthouse Square Association, P.O. Box 411, Charlotte, MI 48813, in memory of Lucile Halsey.

Linda Hamlin

Linda Kay (Marsh) Hamlin, 59, of Rapid City, formerly of Lake Odessa died Thursday, March 29, 2007 at her residence. She was born on April 25, 1947 in Hastings, to Wilbur C. and Kay M. (Walker) Marsh.

On Dec. 4, 1965 Linda married Alan Hamlin. She retired from the Secretary of State's office with the State of Michigan after 30 years of service.

Linda was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Elk Rapids and the Juniper Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, painting, travel and spending time with her grandchildren.

Linda is survived by her husband of 41 years, Alan, son, Mark (Cindy) Hamlin of Hastings; parents, Wilbur and Kay Marsh of Vermontville; grandchildren, Devin and Aaron; sister, Rebecca (Dennis) Marsh-Day of California; brother, Tom Marsh of Vermontville, and sister-in-law Jeanette Hamlin of California.

She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Randy Hamlin.

A memorial service will be held in Hastings at Grace Lutheran Church on Wednesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. A second memorial service will take place Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Elk Rapids.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Calvary Lutheran Church, 10180 Elk Lake Road, Elk Rapids, MI 49690 in memory of Linda. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Mildred Hanes

Mildred Hanes, 94, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007. Mrs. Hanes was born May 27, 1913 in Arthur Township, Clare County the daughter of Harry and Adeline (Spicer) Cleveland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William John Hanes; sisters, June Mersman, Wilma Pasco; and brothers, Ernie Cleveland, Bernie Cleveland and Ferris Cleveland.

She is survived by her sons, Earl and David Hanes, both of Charlotte; daughter, Lois (Michael) Wyatt of Carson City NV; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth (Ray) Owens of Clare, Ardeth Helbling of Oregon and Ella (Don) Goodbread of Ft. Mojave, AZ; brother, Archie Cleveland; sister-in-laws, Gertrude Higgins of Clear Water, FL; Leora Isanhart of Clear Water, FL; Pauline Hanes of Pt. St. Lucie, FL and Helen Cleveland of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services were held Nov. 12, 2007 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Miller and Pastor Perry Purcell officiating. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Marvin Hankins

Marvin George Hankins, 66, of Charlotte, died Friday, April 6, 2007. He was a retired Sergeant in the Army National Guard. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Robert L. Harmon

Robert L. Harmon, 79, of Charlotte died Sunday, Feb. 11 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. Bob was born March 5, 1927 in Carmel Township, Eaton County the son of Cleve and Venus (Towe) Harmon and was a lifelong Carmel Township resident.

He had been employed by the L. L. Johnson Lumber Co., Charlotte for 33 years, the Plywood Sale Co. of Lansing for 16 years and Fulton Lumber Co. of Charlotte. He enjoyed raising strawberries for sale on his farm.

He was preceded in death by sons, Robert, Jack, Charley and Byron Harmon; daughter, Roxanne Harmon; and seven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Marie J. (Uhl) Harmon; seven children, Lonnie (Jane) Harmon of Minnesota, Penny (Robert) Granger of Charlotte, Jeffery (Mollie) Harmon of Arizona, Dean (Cindy) Harmon of Charlotte, David Harmon of Charlotte, Dawn (James) Morse of Charlotte and Christopher (Lisa) Harmon of Charlotte; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Martha (Wayne) Frey of Charlotte.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may go to Eaton Community Hospice.
