Myrtle Rice Monroe

Myrtle Rice Monroe, 97, of East Lansing, died Sunday, March 14, 2004.

Mrs. Monroe was born Aug. 18, 1906 in Kenton, Ohio, the daughter of Albert and Sadey (Anderson) Rice. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Lansing, and was affiliated with the Sparrow Hospital Auxiliary Escort Service for over 40 years.

She is survived by her son, Leon (Carol) Monroe II of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Gertrude Coleman of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, in 1987; sisters, Edna Lantzer and Blanche Graf; and brothers, Carl Rice and William Coleman.

Funeral services were held March 17 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Philip Hobson officiating. In addition, a memorial serviced was held March 18 in the Ada Whitehouse Room at Burcham Hills Retirement Center. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Howell.

Memorial contributions may be made to House of Ruth, 716 Pleasant St., Charlotte, MI 48813; Eaton Clothing and Furniture Center, 444 Horatio, Charlotte, MI 48813; or the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Marian E. Morris

Marian Elaine Morris, age 67, of Jackson, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, April 8, 2004.

She was born April 5, 1937 in Jackson, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Parr) Schulz-Bartels. Marian was retired from General Motors in Lansing with over 30 years of service, and was a member of UAW Local #652. She was a very caring mother who gave her all for her family, and she enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are her four children, Paul (Amy) Morris of Eaton Rapids, Teresa Niemeyer of Papillion, Neb., Cathy (Matt) West of Potterville and David (Dorothea) Morris of Eaton Rapids; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Delores (Kenny) Elston of Jackson; brothers, Jimmy (Marge) Schulz of Bay City and Harold (Marsha) Schulz of Silver Springs; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held April 13 from Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with burial following in the Pherdun Cemetery in Sandstone Township. Pallbearers were Kenneth Combs, David Morris, Jeremiah Morris, Jason Romero, Dale Elston and Kenneth Elston.

Wilma O. Mott

Wilma O. (Oteney) Mott, 83, of Olivet, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at her residence.

Mrs. Mott was born March 17, 1921 in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, the daughter of William and Veva (Estelle) Oteney and had been an Olivet-area resident for 63 years. She had been employed by the Kellogg Co. and Wilcox-Gay/Recordio Corp, managed the former Bib’N’Tucker Restaurant in Olivet and worked for the state of Michigan FIA, from where she retired after 21 years of service. She was a past worthy matron of the Brookfield OES, had been active in the Eaton County Democratic Party and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1960.

She was married to Leslie D. Mott on Sept. 26, 1937; he preceded her in death Nov. 22, 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Cedric Oteney.

Surviving are her children, Shirley (Gerald) Campbell of Bellevue, Tone (Sheila) Mott of Olivet, Laurel (Eleanor) Mott of Olivet and Richard (Susan) Mott of Bath; nine grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside services and inurnment was held Sept. 29 at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Janis K. Mugford

Janis K. Mugford, 50, of Charlotte, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 in Charlotte.

Mrs. Mugford was born Dec. 14, 1953 in Charlotte, the daughter of Rex and Bettie (Moening) Morrissey. Janis was a certified health unit coordinator for many years and enjoyed crafts.

She is survived by husband, David Mugford; daughter, Sadie Mugford of Lansing; son, Zeb Mugford of Charlotte; daughter, Abbie Mugford of Lansing; her mother, Bettie; brothers, John (Cindy) Morrissey of Charlotte, Tom (Vickie) Morrissey of Lansing and Matt (Julie) Morrissey of Kalamazoo.

She was preceded in death by her father, Rex, in 1991.

A small memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Terry B. Mullins

Terry B. Mullins, 50, of Charlotte, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004.

Mr. Mullins was born Sept. 30, 1953 in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Bee and Louise (Gabbard) Mullins. Terry worked as a carpenter and was a former Marine recruiter. He was a member of the Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3552.

He is survived by sons, Jason Mullins of Sunfield and Richard Mullins of Detroit; and two grandchildren and many friends.

A memorial service was held Jan. 26 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Needmore Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Terry’s memory (c/o Micki Smith). Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Edith R. Murray

Edith Ruth “Edie” Murray was born in a sheepherder’s wagon in Mutton Hollow, Mont., on Aug. 9, 1933 in Turner, Mont. Edith’s father was William Campbell and mother Ruth (Mord) and stepfather Merrill C. Hood.

Mrs. Murray enjoyed music of many kinds, in her earlier years she learned to play the accordion and joined in with the music with other family members during their gatherings. Edith like dancing, crafts and had written a novel based on life growing up in Montana in the 1930s, which had not yet been published. Edith had most recently attained her real estate license and worked as a local real estate agent.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Wilson Murray; daughter, Bunny (Kenneth) Sweet of Washington state; son, Thomas Patrick (Luann) Murray of Charlotte; daughter, Laurie (Larry) Butner of Washington state; three grandchildren, Todd Sweet of Idaho, Tommi Leigh Butner and Brad Butner of Washington state; brother, Duke Campbell of California and sister, Connie Pursley of Montana.

Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice Services. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Doris Myers

Doris Beatrice Myers, 99, of Olivet died Thursday, March 4, 2004. Mrs. Myers was born July 4, 1904, in Chester Township, Michigan, the daughter of Guy Eugene and Laura (Lamie) Ash of the Chester area.

She attended the Lamie School, married Lionel (Scotty) Myers and lived most of her life on the farm in the Five Point and M-78 neighborhood. Doris was a member of the West Carmel Congregational Church and belonged to the Church Circle. Over the years she has made many friends in the rural Charlotte and Olivet neighborhood. In the past she helped many shut-in-friends and in return has been helped by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Guy and Laura Ash, her husband Lionel (Scotty) Myers in 1973, two brothers, Clare Sr. and Clark Ash, sisters-in-law Eva (Curry) Ash and Thelma (Root) Ash, and great grandniece Kristin Ash.

Doris is survived by nephews Clare (Shirley) Ash Jr. and Roger (Mary) Ash all of Charlotte, Kent and Dennis Ash and niece Susan (Ash) Custer all of Florida, and special cousin Louise Clay.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 6 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was in Bosworth Cemetery in Walton Township.

Leta G. Nagle

Leta G. Nagle was born Sept. 4, 1901, the sixth daughter of Andrew and Emma Green. She passed away Oct. 22, 2004.

She was raised and lived in the Vermontville area all her life, graduating from Vermontville High School in the class of 1981. On Aug. 29 of that same year, she was united in marriage with William Northrup. Both worked in downtown stores for many years. To that union there were three daughters, Kathryn (Lloyd) Bartholomew of Mecosta, Barbara (Leslie) Harrison of Winter Haven, Fla., and Phyllis (Merle) Haines, also of Winter Haven; one granddaughter, Diana Bennett; and six grandsons, William Haines, merle (Brad) Haines, Mark Haines, John Haines, Peter Haines and Dale Walter; a host of great-grandchildren and four “great-greats”.

Leta was the oldest and had the longest continuous membership in the Vermontville Congregational Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Widowed in 1946, she served as the village clerk and township clerk for many years. Leta then married the Rev. Dow D. Nagle, who preceded her in death in 1956.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 at Vermontville Congregational Church, with Rev. Sally Nolen officiating.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home Charlotte.
