Janice J. Neal

Janice J. Neal, 64, of Charlotte, died Nov. 13, 2004.

Mrs. Neal was born April 10, 1940, the daughter of Alice and Valmore (Fhaner) Becktel of Charlotte. She worked in anodizing at Hoover Universal until they closed, and then enjoyed taking care of children in her daycare for 16 years.

She is survived by her mother Alice Becktel, son Kevin Neal, sister Judy Peters, and niece Dianna (Pat) Ruthruff, all of Charlotte; nephew Jeff (Debra) Peters of Albion, and good friend Melba (Gay) French of Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her father, Valmore Becktel.

Graveside services were held Nov. 18 at Maple Hill Cemetery with Reverend Philip Hobson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, American Cancer Society and Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Jason A. Nelson

Jason “Jake” Arden Nelson, 30, of Charlotte, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004.

Mr. Nelson was born Feb. 4, 1974 in Lansing, the son of James O. Nelson and Sue (Miller) Johnstone. Jake was a fan of country music, and watching the television series Dukes of Hazard. He enjoyed riding along on a golf cart, and his many trips to Cedar Point.

He is survived by his mother Sue and stepfather Dave Johnstone; brother, Jim (Neana) Nelson Jr.; sisters, Ronda (Bill) Alsip, Dondi Hall, Tish Nelson; brother, Chris (Sheri) Johnstone; sister, Jackie (Jon) Spitzley; aunts, Ardis (Pete) Bates of Eaton Rapids, Cindy Nelson of Union City; uncle, Larry Nelson of Wimauma, Fla.; nieces and nephews; and special teach, Loretta Ott.

He was preceded in death by his father, James O. Nelson, on March 7, 2004.

Memorial service was held Sept. 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Phil Hobson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the United Cerebral Palsy Association or the House of Ruth.

Cynthia M. Nevins

Cynthia “Cindy” Marie Nevins, 40, of Charlotte, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and best friend, passed away, Friday, July 23, 2004 after a brave battle with cancer.

She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and caring ways. Cindy was born Aug. 31, 1963 in St. Johns, the daughter of Owen and Veronica (Eiseler) Feldpausch.

She was a graduate of Grand Ledge High School and a departmental technician for the state of Michigan, Office of Public School Retirement. She loved to support those around her and was an avid Charlotte Orioles fan.

She is survived by her husband Robert “Robb” Nevins II, son Grant Nevins, daughters Becky Nevins, Rikki Nevins and Robbyn (Michael) Hamilton, granddaughter Jade Annmarie Hamilton, all of Charlotte; sister Tammy (Jack) Coffey, mother Veronica (John) Davis, brother Larry (Kathy) Feldpausch, all of Lansing; brothers-in-law Rick (Toni) Nevins, mother-in-law Marilyn Royston Garlow and husband Richard, father-in-law Bob Nevins, stepmother-in-law Jeanette Nevins, all of Charlotte; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Owen Feldpausch and brother, Lynn Feldpausch.

The family expressed appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Eaton Community Hospice House for their wonderful care.

Funeral services were held July 27 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Tim Olson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Sue Ann Nevins

Sue Ann Nevins, on Aug. 9, 2004, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother peacefully passed away in her home in Mesa, Ariz., after a brief illness.

Sue was born Nov. 14, 1935 in Charlotte. She was the next to youngest child of five to Delmar Everett and Flora Della (Mileham) Steinman. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1954 and was also names the basketball queen that year. She was united in marriage to Rex Harris Nevins on Aug. 20, 1954 in Charlotte. She held many employment positions throughout her life, but her most fulfilling work was being a wife and mother. She loved her roses, hummingbirds and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Sue will be greatly missed by the many lives she touched.

Sue is survived by her husband, Rex h.; daughter, Wendy (Mike) Pratley of Frankfort, Pam (Charles) Hoaglin of Salem, Ohio; sons, Randal (Laurie) of Concord, Brian (Lori) of Marshall, Rex (Jaye) of Three Rivers, Mike (Kris) of Homer; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Russell of Palmetto, Fla., Edwin (Dorothy) of LaGrange, Ill., Frances of Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers-in-law, Ray (Mary) Nevins of Tustin, Roy Nevins, Robert Nevins of Charlotte, and Gerald Fetterman of Springport; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son David Lee, parents, and her sister Lorene.

A Celebration of Life will be announced with date and location at a later time.

Memorial donations may be made to any local hospice organization or The American Diabetes Foundation.

Rex D. Newberry

Rex D. Newberry, 74, of Battle Creek, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at home.

He was born Dec. 5, 1929 in Bellevue to Daniel and Florence (Weatherbee) Newberry. He attended Bellevue High School and served in the U.S. Army in the 23rd Regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. He owned his own plastering business and worked in the Battle Creek area. Rex was a member of Nashville VFW Post 8260, American Legion Post 298 and the 2nd Infantry Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the Soaring Eagle Casino and going to horse races around the state with his close friends. Rex married Carol Ann Berry Sept. 24, 1953; she survives. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last fall.

Also surviving are son, Dale Newberry of Delton; grandson, Aaron (Kelli) Newberry of Hastings; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron and Kennedy Newberry; sisters, Mildred Angus of Bellevue and Joan Evans of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Newberry; brothers, Maurice and Junior Newberry; and sisters, Maxcine Palmer, Jessie White, Ardis Morrison, Norma Witcheterman and Elaine Newberry.

Services were held Feb. 16 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Glenn Wegner of Baseline United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice Care and the V.A. Medical Center.

Shirley Ann Nicholas

Shirley Ann Nicholas, age 70, died Friday, November 5, 2004 in Lansing. Shirley was born August s18, 1934 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Oliver and Olive Alphea (Baker) Goodrich. She and her husband, Chuck, who preceded her in death in 1998, owned and operated Nicholas Electric in Eaton Rapids for 49 years. Shirley started the first “Welcome Wagon” in Eaton Rapids, was a charter member of the first women’s JC’s Auxiliary, a member of First United Methodist Church and Junior Women’s Club.

Surviving are 1 daughter, Kathy Ann (Alan) Bungart of Mason; 2 sons, Kevin Nicholas of MN, Ken (Marsha) Nicholas of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren, Tim (Robin) Nicholas, Trisha Nicholas, Bethany (Spc. Ruben) Pen~a, Caryn Nicholas, Kailee, Jarred and Jenna VanDerVeen; 1 great grandson, Kyle Nicholas; 1 sister, Sharon (David) Southwell of Eaton Rapids; 2 nephews, Gregory and Geoffrey Southwell; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson of CA; 3 adopted daughters, Tina, Rocky and Leslie.

Funeral services were held on Monday, November 8, 2004 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids and interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions of Eaton Community Hospice or the Eaton Rapids Historical Society in memory of Shirley Nicholas.

Mary E. Nichols

Mary Elizabeth Nichols, 19, of Middleville, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 in an automobile accident in front of the church she loved.

Mary was born June 6, 1985 to Harold and Sarah (Wood) Nichols. She graduated from Thornapple-Kellogg High School in 2003 and was currently attending GRCC. Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church of Middleville and was a huge part of the youth ministry. Mary’s love of the Lord was evident in everything she did.

Mary is survived by her parents; brothers, Jim and Bill; grandmother, Donna Wood of Charlotte; aunts and uncles, Dale Nichols of Middleville, Mary (Ralph) Dewald of Washington, Larry (Bridgette) Nichols of Missouri, Frances Bouchard of Florida, Ruth Beard of Middleville, Janet Nichols of Hastings, Patricia Nichols of Rockford, Bob (Sandy) Wood of Potterville, Norm (Jackie) Wood of Dimondale, Nancy (Chuck) Adams of Hastings, Will (Deb) Wood of Grand Ledge, John (Nichol) Wood of Grand Ledge, Edgar Wood of Charlotte; special family friends, Dick and Joanne Raymond, Irving; and special cousins, Carol, Alesse, and many cousins and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by grandparents, Eltha and Philip Nichols, James Wood and Uncle Bill Nichols.

Funeral services were held Nov. 6 at First Baptist Church in Middleville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the FBC Youth Ministry. Arrangements were by Beeler Funeral Home in Middleville.

Dean Noble

Dean Noble, age 88, of Onondaga, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 in Charlotte. Dean was born February 16, 1916 in Onondaga and lived there his whole life. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army and receiving a Silver Star, and a member of the VFW in Mason. Dean retired from Wyeth, Inc. in Mason in 1980 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Onondaga Community Church, Past Master & Life Member of the Onondaga Masonic Lodge #197 F & AM, Leslie Chapter #100, Leslie Council #50 and Jackson Commandry #9, Jackson York Rite College #3, Mason Chapter OES #150 and the Order of the High Priesthood. Dean was involved in Onondaga Township government of 41 years, serving as Justice of the Peace for 6 years, Township Treasurer for 17 ½ years, Planning Commission for 12 years and Board of Review for 6 years.

Surviving him are his wife of 59 years, Joyce (Osborne) Noble of Onondaga; 1 daughter, Janece (George “Biff”) Rockey of Berrien Springs; 2 sons, Warren (Becky) Noble of Onondaga, Robert (Joanie) Noble of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Nora (Eddie) Cash, Jeffery Rockey, Erin (Chip) Muller, Peter Noble, Tim (Mary) Noble, Troy Noble, Tricia Noble, Leslie Berneske, Molly Berneske, Abbey Berneske; 2 great-grandchildren, Connor Noble and Sydney Muller; and several nieces & Nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518n S. Main, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. William Muller officiating. Interment will follow at the Onondaga Cemetery, Ondaga, MI. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Onondaga Community Church Building Fund or Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Dean Noble.
