Virginia M. (Church) Hammond

Virginia M. (Church) Hammond of Springport, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at the age of 71. Ginny enjoyed quilting, birds and flowers. She was also a former Girl Scout leader and a Sunday School teacher. Ginny was a super mom and grandma. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years; John; three children, Patti Sauber, Joni (Ed) Ledvina, and Vickie (Brian) Maurer; and Barry Rudloff. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Rudloff, one brother & one sister. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, two brothers, five sisters, & many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Springport United Methodist Church on March 15, 2002 with Pastor David Litchfield officiating. Interment followed at Springport Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Robertson Funeral Homes, Springport Chapel. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Springport United Methodist Church.

Hubert Hanley Jr.

Hubert Hanley Jr., 79, of Charlotte, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Mr. Hanley was born July 22, 1923 in Durand, Shiawassee County, the son of Hubert and Ethel (Clymer) Hanley Sr., and had been a Charlotte resident since 1970. Mr. Hanley was a 1941 graduate of Durand High School, attended the University of California-Davis Agriculture School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired Michigan State Police detective lieutenant, retiring in 1974 after 25 years of service. He was a life member of Maple City Post #2406 VFW, Greenwalt Flaherty Post #42 American Legion, the Charlotte Country Club, a charter member of the Charlotte Optimist Club, and a member of the of Saladin Shrine Temple of Grand Rapids, and a former Charlotte Fire Department inspector.

He is survived by his wife, Caryl (Arthur) Hanley, to whom he was married in 1950; daughter, Joyce (Roger) Emrick of Parkersburg, W.Va.; son, Patrick (Rebecca) Hanley of Dimondale; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held Aug. 7 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Optimist Club.

Doyle F. “Jeff” Harris

Doyle F. “Jeff” Harris, age 72, of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at a Lansing hospital. He was born March 29, 1930 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Chester and Rhoda (Winters) Harris. He was a graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1948. Mr. Harris was a retired employee of 34 years with Aluminum Extrusion of Charlotte and a retired farmer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood cutting and any kind of football games.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Esther (McManus); 5 children, Donald (Michelle) Harris of Charlotte, Sheila Chambers, David (Seana Sada) Harris, Cheryl (James) Allen and Jim (Karen) Harris all of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Joyce (Paul) Marietta and Sharon (Terry) Perkins all of Eaton Rapids and Phyllis (Tom) Murray of Grand Ledge; brother, Duane (Linda) Harris of Eaton Rapids; uncle, Mike Harris of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Saturday, September 14, 2002 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in the Oakwood Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice, envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Eunice L. Harris

Eunice L. Harris, age 86 of Eaton Rapids, passed away July 4, 2002 at her residence. She was born October 2, 1915 to Charles and Reba (Carter) Davenport. Eunice was married to Lyle Harris on June 18, 1938 and lived in the Eaton Rapids and Duck Lake area all her life. She worked at Green Bay Pickle Co. until she retired at the age of 71. She was a devoted mother, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma. She enjoyed dancing, fishing and going to garage sales and was a member of the Springport V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lyle; 4 children, Joan (Dan) Rogers, Judy (Rex) Twichell, Roger (Barbara) Harris and Janet Mahan; 8 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, 1 sister, 2 brothers, 1 grandson and 1 son-in-law.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 9th from 6-8 p.m. at the Shelly Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. There will be no service held. For those desiring, contributions may be made to the Springport V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary or Hartland Hospice in memory of Eunice Harris. Arrangements by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home Grand Ledge.

Verna M. Hart

Verna Mae Hart, 93, of Charlotte, formerly of Flint, passed away Friday, April 5, 2002.

Mrs. Hart was born June 25, 1908 in Murray, Ky. She lived most of her adult life in Flint, where she retired as a seamstress from St. Joseph Hospital in 1973. She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Flint and later attended Calvary Baptist Church after moving to Charlotte.

She is survived by her daughter, Julia (John) Parker of Murray, Ky.; son, Vernon (Shirley) Hart of Charlotte; grandchildren, Catherine (Carl) Anderson of Lansing and Richard (Theresa) Hart of Charlotte; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Garrett Anderson, and Matthew and Jenna Hart; sister-in-law, Helen Carpenter of Saginaw; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Vernon Hart; and grandson, Michael Hart.

Funeral services were held April 9 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Internment was at City Cemetery in Murray, Ky.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Teen Ireland Mission Trip.

Joe Hartig

Joe Hartig, 55, of Charlotte, died June 22 at his residence. Mr. Hartig was born June 16, 1947 in Lansing, the son of Marshall and Eileen (Foster) Hartig.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was employed as an Enforcement Officer for Eaton County Friend of the Court and a deputy with the Eaton County Sheriff’s Department.

He is survived by his wife, Toni (Munson), sons Dan (Pam) Hartig of Eaton Rapids, Joe Hartig III of Ft. Jackson, S.C., Justin Hartig of Charlotte, daughters Lori Schroeder of Holt, Julie Hartig of Charlotte, Amy (Mike) Mollitor of DeWitt, eight grandchildren, Hailey, Nicholas, Alexis, Mara, Skyler, Dylan, Tyler and Jayden, mother, Eileen Hartig, brothers, Jeff (Sharon) Hartig of Mason, Jon (Dawn) Hartig of Lansing, David Hartig, Mike (Kim) Hartig, both of Holt, sisters Carol Barish of DeWitt, Cheryl (Jim) Ordway of Holt, and Chris (Tom) Graham of Dimondale.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joe, Jr. and father, Marshall.

Funeral services were June 26 with Pastor Joseph D. Huston officiating.

If desired, contributions may be made to a charity of choice in the name of Joe M. Hartig.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Nellie Harvey

Nellie Harvey, 90, of Nashville, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at Pennock Hospital in Hastings.

Mrs. Harvey was born July 29, 1912 in Odessa Township, the daughter of Marion and Mabel (Eldridge) Hummel. She retired from Fisher Body in Lansing. Nellie enjoyed playing bingo and cards, traveling, family parties, and being with her family. She was a member of the Nashville VFW Post 8260.

She is survived by daughters, Dorothy Ilene Collier of Nashville, Donna (Ray) Olmstead of Nashville, and Opal (Wesley) Gillons of Hastings; sons, Joe (Ginny) Harvey of Vermontville and Bob Harvey of Nashville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rosie (Donald) Thompson of Vermontville; several nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Norma Hummel and Betty Hummel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gayle Harvey in 1955; daughter, Elizabeth Bodo in 2001; brothers, LeRoy Hummel, Allen Hummel, Glen Hummel and Dick Hummel; sisters, Ella Walton, Reta Erridge, Joyce West, Elaine Laiben and June Wellman; and infant brothers, Raymond, Burt and Charles Hummel.

Graveside services were held Nov. 8 at Sunfield Cemetery. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

David M. Hathcox

David Mark Hathcox, 43, of Lansing, died March 28, 2002. Mr. Hathcox was born Aug. 31, 1958 in Charlotte, the son of George and Shirley Ann (Martin) Hathcox. He is survived by his parents; brother, Richard of Carson City; sisters, Pamela Lynn Rohr and Lori Ann Wagner, both of Angola, Ind.; and step-grandfather, Winfred Gilbert of Lawrence, Kansas. No services are planned at this time.
