Elwood R. Hawkins

Elwood Raymond “Duke” Hawkins, 88, of Grand Ledge, passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2002 in his residence.

Mr. Hawkins was born Sept. 19, 1914 in Vermontville, the first child of Ray and Hattie (Bale) Hawkins. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Forces in the Pacific. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 8260 in Nashville, and retired in 1974 after working more than 30 years at Motor Wheel Corp. in Lansing. He was a farmer in Grand Ledge for many years as well. After retiring, he enjoyed 19 years of fishing every day possible. He was known as a loving and devoted husband and father.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Idabelle (Graham); his brother, Lawrence; and recently his sister, Anna Mae (Hawkins-Schaub) Antico. Surviving are two sisters, Lucille Carroll of Portland and Eleanor Rawson of Grand Rapids; daughter, Gloria McCoy (Gerald Fay); grandson, Pat (Tina) McCoy of Lansing; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, in Sunfield. A military graveside service followed at Sunfield Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the cancer or Alzheimer’s fund, c/o Rosier Funeral Home, P.O. Box 36, Sunfield, MI 48890.

Keith Hayter, Sr.

Keith Hayter, Sr., age 76 of Sear, Michigan, formerly of Onondaga, Michigan, died Thursday, March 28, 2002. He was born April 16, 1925 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan the son of Willy and Doris Hayter. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn, his parents, one granddaughter, Heidi Hayter, and one brother, Leslie.

He is survived by three children, Keith (Diana) Hayter, of Eaton Rapids, Dixie (Bill) Vincent of Jackson, and Harold (Shirley) Hayter, of Sears, Michigan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Corey Funeral Home, Evart, Michigan on Saturday, March 30, 2002.

Albert Francis Hector

Albert F. Hector, age 77 of Springport, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at a Lansing hospital. He was born October 25, 1924 in Springport Township, Jackson County, the son of William and Mable (Baller) Hector. Al served in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the European Theatre. He was an Old Fashioned Farmer, enjoying working the ground, helping his neighbors and being a good and honest friend. Al had kept busy all his life, and right up to the end, you could have found him at his Produce Stand in Eaton Rapids or in Jackson. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Edward and Harold; a brother, Ronald and a sister, Edith Eldred.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Arlene (Dotson); 7 children, Howard (Terry) Hector of Eaton Rapids, Ruth (Richard) Bradley of Albion, Audrey Leach of Lowell, Nancy (Vance) Marsh of Eaton Rapids, Cynthia (Dave) Johnson of Charlotte, Allen (Helen) McCarty of California and Barry Hector of Springport; 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Mary) Hector of Onondaga and sister, Gladys Merrifield of Vandercook Lake; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held August 31, 2002 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Burial followed in Tompkins Cemetery, Tompkins Center. For those desiring, memorial gifts may be made directly to family or to the Salvation Army in memory of Albert F. Hector.

Lois Heinze

Lois Jackson Heinze, 87, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Lansing, died Thursday, May 23, 2002.

Mrs. Heinze was born Aug. 31, 1914 in Eaton County, the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Jackson) Fast.

She is survived by daughter, Sandi (John) Bement of Eaton Rapids; granddaughters, Holly (Ron) Lott of Eaton Rapids and Michelle (Michael) Endres of Grand Ledge; and great-grandchildren, Cody and Chelsi Lott.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leon Heinze in 1975, brother Bruce Fast and sister Esma Vance. Funeral services were held May 25 at Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing.

Rick E. Helferich

Rick E. Helferich, age 43, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at his residence.

Rick was born April 10, 1959 in Lansing, the son of William and Anna Louise (Culham) Helferich. He was a framer/carpenter with Holbrook Construction in Lansing; was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved the great out-of-doors.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Anna, and his sister, Marilyn.

Surviving are his fiancée, Kacie Byron of Eaton Rapids; two daughters, Darcy Cain of Onondaga and Korie Byron of Lansing; son, William “Billy” Joseph Helferich of Portland; three granddaughters, Shonie Lynn Norton, Katelynn Kildea and Gabrielle Kildea, all of Lansing; brother, Ron (Nancy) Helferich of Lansing; sister, Sherry (Walter) Edwards of Dimondale; four step-brothers, Russ, Mark, Tim and Harry McQuay; and one step-sister, Karen McQuay.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 1, 2002 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Casket bearers were Steven Mercer, Jimmy Mercer, Mike McDaniel, Jason McDaniel, Oscar Dickson and Rick Sharp.

Those desiring may make contributions to the William Helferich Scholarship Fund in memory of Rich Helferich.

Charlotte Abfalter Henry

Charlotte Abfalter Henry, 92, of Charlotte, died June 4, 2002.

Mrs. Henry was born June 8, 1909 in Greenfield.

She is survived by her children, John (Pauline) Abfalter of Lansing, Mary (Arthur) Allen of Charlotte, Roger (Linda) Abfalter of Tennessee, Bill Abfalter of Lansing, and Merle (Barbara) Abfalter of Grand Ledge; 38 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John “Chris” Abfalter and Richard Henry; son, John “Pete” Abfalter; granddaughter, Kathy Arreguin; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held June 7 at Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel. Interment was at Glendale Cemetery in Okemos.

Marian E. Herman

Marian E. (Cheney, Emigholz) Herman, 74, of Port Royal, S.C., formerly of Charlotte, died Nov. 1, 2002 after a short illness.

Mrs. Herman was the daughter of Albert and Allie Cheney. She attended Olivet College, Albion College and the University of Michigan School of Dental Hygienist. She had been handicapped by polio for 50 years.

She is survived by brothers, Dr. William (Eleanor) Cheney MD of Lansing, Gale Cheney of Chesterfield, Gordon (Loretta) Cheney of Charlotte and Harold (Rose) Cheney of Interlochen; sister-in-law, Maggie Cheney of East Lansing; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Steven Emigholz in 1991; husbands, Lt. Lawrence Emigholz USNR in 1952 and David Herman in 1995; and a brother, Dr. Edward Cheney DDS in 1998. A memorial service was held Nov. 7 at her River Oaks Home in Port Royal, S.C. An additional memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte. Visitation will be immediately following the service at the church. Arrangements are being made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

James E. Hicks

James Edward Hicks, 64, of Conroe, Texas, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002.

Mr. Hicks was born Feb. 26, 1938 in Lansing, the son of Jesse and Edna (Palmer) Hicks.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; daughters, Jodi (Jim) Lincoln of Charlotte and Kim (Jim) Owen of Sheridan; sons, Rod (Lisa) Hicks of Charlotte and Ed (Murielle) Hicks of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and brother, William (Mary Lou) Hicks of Lansing.

Funeral services were held May 31 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
