Haslett, MI

(formerly of the Sarasota area and Cleveland, OH)

Age 94, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 15, 2002. She was born on July 21, 1907 in Cleveland, OH, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Vesely. For many years Ann volunteered at Venice Hospital in Florida, and worked as a Certified Grapho Analyst, and very much enjoyed walking the beach and collecting shells which she used to create shell caricatures. Ann leaves behind her loving son, Lary (Mary) Hill of Haslett; 3 granddaughters, Patricia (Donald) Ryal, Tonia (Steven) Whittaker, and Peggy Colchin, all of Haslett; 7 great grandchildren, Timothy and Caitlin Ryal, Zachary, Asher and Cambria Whittaker, and Sarah and Alexander Colchin. Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Hill, in 1964; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. A celebration of her life was held at the Wynwood Assisting Living Center, 5346 Marsh Road, Haslett, on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at 3:00 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Johnson of People's Church officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in loving memory of Ann Hill, to Ingham Hospice, Care of Ingham Regional Medical Center, 401 W. Greenlawn, Lansing, MI 48910.

Hidey, Geraldine L.

Holt, MI

(Formerly of Hudson, FL)

Age 77, passed away on June 13, 2002. She was born on April 24, 1925 in Lansing to Glenn and Marion (Cooley) Goodman. She was married to Richard V. Hidey and they continued to reside in Lansing. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Richard; and son, Larry Clements. She is survived by: daughter Bonnie (Ernie) Baker; mother-in-law, Vivian Eisele; brother-in-law, John (Sally) Hughes; 3 nieces and 1 Nephew, Jennifer Stiles, Jennifer Hughes, Janie Kelly, and John Hughes IV; daughter-in-law, Connie Clements; several grand nieces and nephews. The family wishes to send special thanks to the staff at Martin Luther Holt Home for their wonderful care of Geraldine. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. The family received friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m., on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Martin Luther Holt Home or to the American Cancer Society.

Hewett, Mildred Kinney

East Lansing, MI

Age 100, passed way on Friday, March 29, 2002, just 11 days after celebrating her 100th birthday among family and friends. Much of her time during those years was spent serving others. She was a member of the Sparrow Auxiliary in Lansing and during WWII she wrapped bandages and cared for injured service men at Fort Custer. She was a native of East Lansing, a graduate of Michigan State University, a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Lansing Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bertrand L. "Bud" Hewett. She is survived by: sons, Bertrand L. of Grand Rapids and John V. of Plymouth; daughter, Joan Ronk of Jacksonville, FL; brother, Morrow Kinney; and sister, Beatrice Curtis. She was grandmother of 13, great grandmother of 27 and great great grandmother of 5. Family and friends were invited to gather to celebrate her life in the Ada Whitehouse Room at Burcham Hills, 2700 Burcham Drive, East Lansing, on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Salvation Army or the First Presbyterian Church of Lansing Food Pantry.

Hersey, Amy

Lansing, MI

Amy Jo Hersey, 37, of Holland died unexpectly on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at her home. She was born on December 7, 1964 in Lansing, MI, the daughter of Roger and Sandy (Bissonette) Hersey. She worked as an Architectural Interior Designer, receiving numerous national architecture awards. She was currently working for URS Corp. of Grand Rapids and also worked many years for GMB Architects of Holland. Amy is survived by her parents, Roger and Sandy Hersey of Traverse City; sister, Shelly K. and Alan Bryde of Holt; 2 nephews, Jacob and Jordan Bryde; grandmother, Marvel Hersey; fiancé, Eric M. Olson; 1 aunt, Joan and Dave Bensen; uncles, Richard and Lucy Hersey, Loren and Pat Hersey and Brad Hersey; and numerous cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by: grandfather, Dale Hersey; and grandparents, Kenneth and Dorothy Bissonette. Amy was a 1983 graduate of Holt High School. She graduated with high honors from Kendall College of Art and Design. She was a person of strong Christian faith. She attended Pennway Church of God in Lansing before moving to Holland where she attended Central Wesleyan Church. Amy was a rare gift to all her people her life touched. She was an individual of extraordinary energy, athleticism, artistry, intelligence, and optimism. Her numerous artistic talent garnered her college graduation with high honors and numerous architectural awards on a national level. World travel was a passion for Amy as evidenced by her well-worn passports. A big part of Amy's life was music: she was a fine pianist and singer. Amy led a life most people only dream about. Her love of life and people was the finest example to all of us. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at 12:00 p.m., at Pennway Church of God in Lansing. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in loving memory of Amy, to the Amy Jo Hersey Memorial Fund, C/O Pennway Church of God, 1101 E. Cavanaugh, Lansing, MI 48910.

Herrick, Ellen K.

Lansing, MI

Age 91, passed away on April 5, 2002. She was born on December 9, 1910 in Detroit, and has lived in the Lansing area most of her life. Mrs. Herrick was a longtime member of Resurrection Catholic Church, and was presently a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Robert in 1995; and her son, Richard in 2002. Surviving are: 3 children, Anne (William) Burke of Bloomingdale, IL, Joseph (Clarabelle) of Holt, Mary (Eldon) Dysinger of Farmington Hills; 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Mona Herrick of Lansing; 2 sisters, Marian Daniels of Lansing and Ruth Hubbard of Lansing; sister-in-law, Vicky Trumble of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral mass was celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Timothy E. MacDonald, at 12:30 p.m., Monday, April 8, 2002 at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing, with the rite of committal in Delta Center Cemetery. The family received friends at the church from 11:30 a.m., until service time on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in memory of Ellen K. Herrick.

Somerville, Garnet V.

Holt, MI
Age 90 passed away on October 10, 2002. She was born in Holt to William and Fannie (Fiedler) Somerville on July 31, 1912. Garnet was a member of the Holt United Methodist Church, active in the church circles and in the Rebekkah’s. She was preceded in death by her parents; two aunts, Adelaide Fiedler and Martha Hubbard and one brother, Murray William Somerville. Surviving are her sister, Kathleen (Russell) Huber; nieces and nephews, Sue Farrell of Battle Creek, Janet Moore of NY, James (Martha) Somerville of Ironwood, William Joseph (Mary Lou) Somerville of Williamston, Mary Jo (Jim) Langell of MA, Mary K. Curtis of Stockbridge and James (Rosalie) Huber of Okemos; and many great nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2002 at the Holt United Methodist Church, 2321 N. Aurelius with the Rev. Lynn Grimes officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Holt United Methodist Church in memory of Garnet.

Herde, Frances E.

Alma, MI

(Formerly of Lansing, MI)

Age 85, passed away on September 30, 2002. She was born on October 16, 1916 in Detroit, the daughter of Glenn and Franc (Johnson) Freeman. She graduated from Central High School, class of 1934. She was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Lansing for over 75 years; was an associate member of Shelby Congregational United Church of Christ; was active in Bible Study at the Masonic Home in Alma for two years; and at the New Era Reformed Church for 20 years; was active in the Girl Scouts for over 35 years; was affiliated with the American Youth Foundation at Camp Miniwanca, Stoney Lake, MI; and retired from M.S.U. in 1979 as an assistant Text Book Buyer. She was preceded in death by: 2 daughters, Hope Harvey and Carol D. Becker. She is survived by: her husband of 32 years, Byron Herde; son, Dr. Harold C. (Linda) Harder of Tulsa, OK; daughter, Judith A. Young of Stevensville; step-daughters, Joyce (John) Peters of Winton/Salem, NC and Linda (William) Becker of Johnstown, CO; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, October 4, 2002 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Blessings International, (1-877-250-8101)
