'Ellie' Andrews, restaurateur

Mary Eleanor "Ellie" Justice Winters Andrews, who helped start the Coach and Four restaurant in Covington, died Tuesday in Lexington. She was 73.

Mrs. Andrews was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy and enjoyed working in the restaurant business.

She married Ed Winter, a waiter at the Gourmet Room in Cincinnati. Together, they started their first restaurant, The Madison Grill, in the early 1950s.

Across from the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, it was an instant success. The Winters soon outgrew the space and bought a gabled building on Scott Street near the courthouse.

"My dad said it used to be a cannery, " said Mrs. Andrews' son, Stephen Winter of Lexington. "They turned it into a restaurant."

The Coach and Four, with its white walls and green roof, became known as the place to go for good steaks and a friendly reception.

Mrs. Andrews - 5-foot-2 with dark hair, blue eyes and a quick wit - was the host ess.

The couple enjoyed ball room dancing and often were the center of attention on the Beverly Hills Supper Club dance floor.

In the 1960s, they sold the restaurant and divorced. Mrs. Andrews moved to Lou isville, where she later met and married Todd Andrews.

She continued to work in restaurants in Louisville and Lexington. In the 1980s, she returned to Northern Kentucky, where she lived in Park Hills and worked at Lazarus.

She developed heart prob lems and moved to Lexington to be near her son and his family.

"She was always friendly and up-beat, " said her son. "She enjoyed going to res taurants, meeting people."

Survivors besides her son include a sister, Jane Kloenne of Louisville; grand daughter Jacqueline Winter of Lexington; and cousin Laverne (Mrs. William) Dunn of Fort Wright.

A memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Whitehall Funeral Chapel in Lexington is in charge of ar rangements.

Geneva Anderson, 75, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, at 7:40 a.m. Friday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a retired inspector for Equitable Insurance, Florence.

Survivors include a daughter, Geneva Lee Brown of Oakley, Ohio; a son, George Allen Daniels Jr. of Covington; a sister, Marie Livingston of Marion, Ind.; and a grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Josephine Annilee Devon, 82, of Shannon, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a retired private nurse's aide.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, served on the church board and was also financial secretary of the church, the Bethel United Methodist Women and a past Sunday School superintendent and district historian.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Swartz of Maysville.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Rome, May's Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Bethel cemetery Fund, c/o Hazel Dillon, 4312 KY 596, May's Lick, Ky. 41055 or to Gideons International.

Millie R. Sackmann Flaig, 100, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:21 a.m. Feb. 2 at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Bond Hill American Legion Post in Cincinnati and St. Mary's Ladies Society. Her husband, Richard Flaig, died in 1976.

Survivors include daughters, Doris Feldman of Newport Beach, Calif., and Mary Lou Schuh of Cold Spring; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Campbell Lodge Boys Home, 150 Skyline Drive, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Jane M. George, 69, of Elsmere, formerly of Newport, died at 4:36 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sisters, Betty M. Williams of Cincinnati and Clara M. George of Elsmere; and a brother, Leonard George of Norwood, Ohio.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Arthur H. Gillespie, 81, of Taylor Mill, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a heavy equipment operator for International Engineers Operating Union Local No. 18, Cincinnati, a member of Hilltop Church of Christ, Taylor Mill, and its Beacons Senior Group, and the Retiree Club of International Engineers Operating Union Local No. 18, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Craig Gillespie of Taylor Mill; a son, Ronald Gillespie of Cincinnati; a stepson, Gary Caldwell of Latonia; a stepdaughter, Linda Baker of Edgewood; brothers, John Gillespie of Butler and Paul Gillespie of Fort Wright; a sister, Geneva Lawson of Alexandria; and a stepgrandson.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hilltop Church of Christ. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hilltop Church of Christ, 5300 Taylor Mill Road, Taylor Mill, Ky. 41015.

J. Garnett Harvey, 69, of Dry Ridge, died February 10 at the home of his brother. He was an iron worker for Stewart-Decatur Iron.

Survivors include a sister, Loretta Lambert of Latonia, and a brother, Rice Harvey of Dry Ridge.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery, Gallatin County.

Mary Margaret Hausman, 80, of Covington, formerly of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a retired technician with Ohio National and volunteered at the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Public Library and the Radio Reading Service. Her husband, Walter Hausman, and a daughter, Diana Kidwell, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Peter Hausman of Newport; daughters, Pamela Callon of Atlanta, Ga., Theresa Hamberg of Southgate and Sandra Hausman of Covington; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Greenup Streets, Covington, Ky. 41011.

Margaret Eugenia Hill, 84, of Florence, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church, Mount Sterling.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. Valis V. Hill of Florence; daughters, Judith Ann McVey of Mount Sterling and Barbara Miller of Nicholasville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, Grassylick Road, Mount Sterling, Ky. 40353.

Dorothy F. Juett, 77, of Owenton, died Thursday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton. She worked for the state employment services office and was a member of the Owenton First Baptist Church, Owen County Woman's Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of the Eastern Star and Sigma Kappa Sorority at Georgetown College.

Survivors include a brother, R.W. "Dub" Juett of Owenton; and a sister, Beulah Poland of Owenton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

Memorials are suggested to The Together We Build Fund at the Owenton First Baptist Church.

Helen Marie McClendon, 70, of Covington, died Tuesday. She was employed by St. Elizabeth Hospital and St. Charles Care Center, Covington, and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Cincinnati. Her husband, Edward McClendon Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Marie Davis of Memphis, Tenn., Thelma McClendon of Cincinnati and Velma McClendon, Patsy McClendon, Maureen McClendon, Glordeen Miller, Theresa Hill and Julia Betts, all of Covington; sons, Maurice Baker of Fresno, Calif., Vincent Duncan of Louisville, Charles McClendon of Covington and Edward McClendon Jr. of Cincinnati; a foster son, Robert Taylor of Covington; a brother, Arthur Wilkins of Memphis, Tenn.; 27 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the time of services Sunday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Evelyn Marlow McCreary, 73, of Sanders, died Friday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton.

She was a former employee of Ison Brothers Furniture Factory and Rich Ladder Company, a former nurse's aide for Carroll County Memorial Hospital and Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, and an EMT for the original Carroll County Ambulance Service. She was also a member of Whites Run Baptist Church. A son, Garry Cecil McCreary, died in 1962.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil B. McCreary of Ghent; a daughter, Diann McCreary Shelton of Sanders; brothers, John F. Marlow of Jeffersonville, Bueal and Charles Marlow Mount, both of Mount Vernon, and Ray Marlow of Morehead; sisters, Sylvia Evans of Morning View, and Ella B. Moore, of Mount Vernon; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ghent Masonic Cemetery, Ghent.

John Mullins, 97, of Covington, died at 8:45 a.m. Friday at Rosedale Manor Care Center, Covington. He was a laborer with B&O; Railroad.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Mullins of Covington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Mercy Maternity Home, P.O. Box 18894, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Clifford Nieberding, 83, of Erlanger, died at 11:50 a.m. Friday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Fred O. Patterson, 88, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a heat treat operator for Vulcan Copper and Supply Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Latonia Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Corinne Patterson of Florence; a daughter, Carol Lee Milner of Corinth; a sister, Tessa Colina of Holiday, Fla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mason Cemetery, Grant County.

Memorials are suggested to Lystra Church of Christ, Dixie Highway, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Harold "Smokey" Pyles, 72, of Carrollton, died Thursday at VA Medical Center, Louisville.

He was a security policeman for the Air National Guard and served as a Carroll County deputy sheriff bailiff, and was a member of United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton, and Carrollton Masonic Lodge. He was an Army Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Pyles of Carrollton; daughters, Marty Pyles of Louisville and Mandi Pyles of Carrollton; sisters, Alice Peuker of Philadelphia, Pa., and Martha Ann Pyles of Bedford; and brothers, William Pyles of Campbellsburg and Elmer Pyles of Carrollton.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, and from noon until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Gilbert H. Rutz, 86, of Bullhead City, Ariz., formerly of Bellevue, died at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday at Western Arizona Medical Center, Bullhead City.

He worked for Blacker Printing Ink Co., Cincinnati, and coached Little League Baseball for the Bellevue Vets League. His first wife, Burnette Schneider Rutz, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Catherine Bintz Rutz of Bullhead City; a daughter, Mary Denise Rutz of Bullhead City; a son, Rev. Gilbert J. Rutz of Erlanger; and a sister, Dorothy Rutz Ross of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Virgil Lee Schulkers, 56, of Silver Grove, died at 10:07 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a disabled warehouseman for Heidelburg Distributing Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Walton Schulkers of Silver Grove; sons, Jay Schulkers of Fort Mitchell and Jeff Schulkers of Bellevue; sisters, Mary Berkemeier of Erlanger, Pat Young of Fort Mitchell and Regina Smith of Corinth; brothers, Joseph Schulkers of Cincinnati and H. Leo Schulkers of Newport; and a granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Kenneth Short, 64, of Elsmere, died at 10:24 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit, Covington.

He was a maintenance man for Rock Tenn, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Short of Elsmere; daughters, Julie Wilson of Winchester, Debra McCowan of Dry Ridge, Rebecca Ball of Burlington, Elizabeth Moscoe of Hebron, Naomi Short of Erlanger and Mary Short of Elsmere; sons, Daniel Short of Bellevue, David Short of Elsmere and Kenneth M. Short of Crescent Springs; a brother Seldon Short Jr. of Stanton; a sister, Marian Johnson of Alexandria; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gabbard Family Cemetery, Ethel.

Barbara Ann Smith, 62, of Owenton, died Friday at Kings Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of the Gratz Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Kay Cook of Owenton, Sharon Gail Goodrich of Gratz, and Pamela Jean Kamunen of Shelbyville; a brother, Wayne Tillett of Ashland, Tenn.; sisters, Peggy Fisher of Lockport, Sue Tillett and Dana Lee, both of Bethlehem, and Janice Jones and Dot Rice, both of Frankfort; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary K. Swope, 91, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at Hurstbourne Care Center at Story Brook. She was a nurse for Speers Hospital and Dr. James Schroer, and a public health nurse for Campbell County Health Department, and a member of Gertrude Chapter of the Eastern Star, and Speers Memorial Nurses Association.

Her husband, Fred Swope, died in 1998, and a son, Charles F. Swope, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Gerry Riffe of Louisville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Meredith Stanley Tarvin, 84, of Carthage, died Friday at Lakeside Healthcare Center, Highland Heights. He was a member of the Carthage United Methodist Church and Local No. 698 Carpenters Union of Kentucky.

He is survived by his wife, Geneva Short Tarvin; daughters, Betty Moore of Hull, Mass., Paula Wilson of Adrian, Mich., and Deanna Peck of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; sisters, Thelma Weckbach of Persimmon Grove and Virginia Miller of Carthage; brothers, Lloyd Tarvin and Warren Tarvin, both of Carthage; five granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Carthage United Methodist Church. Visitation will from 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, Carthage. Memorials are suggested to Carthage United Methodist Church, Carthage.
