Fannie Smith Miller, 94, Hamilton, Florence teacher

Hundreds of former Boone County first graders lost a friend Sunday with the death of Fannie Smith Miller, 94, who taught at Hamilton Ky. and Florence elementary schools for more than 35 years.

"She was Mrs. Miller, but all the kids knew her as Miss Fannie, " said her son, J. J. Miller of Union. "She was like a second mom to so many kids in Boone County."

Mrs. Miller of Florence, taught first grade at Hamilton for 25 years, retiring when she reached age 70. She continued as a substitute teacher at Florence Elementary School for 10 years more, her son said.

He said his mother was a loving, caring teacher, but she also was "old school" when it came to demanding discipline and hard work.

"She worked hard and they worked hard, " her son said.

"They were all her kids and she loved it every day."

Mrs. Miller, a graduate of Burlington High School, was hired on an emergency teaching certificate and started taking college courses only after she began teaching. She graduated from the University of Kentucky when she was in her late 50s, her son said.

She was a member of Big Bone Methodist Church of Union and the Florence and Hamilton (Ky., near Big Bone Lick) senior citizens clubs.

Her husband, David W. Miller, died in 1978. A son, W. R. Miller, died in 1981.

In addition to her son, she is survived by daughters Mattie M. Lipscomb of Latonia, Sara Libby Nolan of Covington and Beulah Mae Lynn of Florence; a brother, Eddie Earl Smith of Burlington; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Union. Memorials are suggested to Florence Senior Citizens Club.

Vernon Anderson, 81, of Burlington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.

Burnettie Baker, 80, of Alexandria, died Friday at her home. She was a member of New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, Alfred Baker, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, William Baker of Alexandria; brothers, Matthew Herald of Harrison, Ohio, Buck Herald of Highland Heights and Jesse Herald of Grants Lick; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services were this morning at New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church. Burial was in Buck Herald Cemetery, Breathitt County. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, handled arrangements.

Wilson Anthony Broome Jr., 73, of Florence, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired special risk underwriter with Safeco Insurance Co., a member of Heritage Fellowship Church in Florence and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Joy Dean Broome; a daughter, Kathleen Trotta of Lakeland, Fla.; sons, William David Broome of Prescott, Ariz., and James Mathew Broome of Hebron; brothers, Robert Broome of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Wayne Broome of Florence; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Heritage Fellowship Assembly of God Church, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Heritage Fellowship Missions, 7216 U.S. 42, Florence, Ky. 41042. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Orville Glasco "Rusty" Brunker, 81, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Grand Haven Nursing Home, Cynthiana. He was a retired parts manager with Harrison Motor Co., a member of First United Methodist Church of Cynthiana and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Esther McKnight Brunker; a daughter, Judith Ann Letcher of Cynthiana; two grandsons and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, 2050 Versailles Road, Lexington, Ky. 40504; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Victor "Biddy" Buhr, 89, of Fort Wright, died Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

He was a retired meat cutter with Johnny Lother Grocery and Catering and a member of St. Agnes Holy Name Society, Fort Wright. He also was a member of the Covington Elks, the Fort Wright Civic Club and Devou Fields Golf League and was a charter member and vice president of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Hebbeler Buhr; a son, Donald Buhr of Fort Wright; a daughter, Karen Rosse of Fort Wright; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 am. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital Medical Center, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229.

Leland Dale Cash, 78, of Williamstown, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include a nephew and nine nieces.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Jean Huffman, 61, of Jeffersonville, Ind., died Saturday at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Myron Huffman; a son, Billy Hesse of Louisville; a daughter, Minnie Jean Hesse of Jeffersonville; a brother, Kenny Rose of Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Walter "Rick" Lail, 55, of Bromley, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired officer with the Ludlow Police Department and a member of Bromley Christian Church and the Fraternal Order of Po lice.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Woomer Lail; daughters, Lee Lail of Bromley and Kelly Crowe of Crescent Springs; a brother, Roger W. Lail of Bromley; a sister, Roxann Clark of Erlanger; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. Elwood Linville, 83, of Maysville, died Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a retired carpenter. His wife, Fannie Moore Linville, died in 1991.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Burke of Lexington; a brother, Demaree Linville of Maysville; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Buri al will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.

Addie Mae Moore, 91, of Highland Heights, died at 1:25 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a retired seam stress with Brohard Shirt Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Christian Church of Fort Thomas, the church Christian Women's Fellowship and the Saturday Nighters club.

Survivors include a daugh ter, Lorenia Moore of High land Heights; two nieces and a nephew.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church Building Fund, 1031 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Cliff G. Nieberding, 83, of Erlanger, died at 11:50 a.m. Friday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.

He was the retired owner of Glenny Glass Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, Milford Gun Club and the Latonia Gun Club.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Warther Nieberding; a son, Steven C. Nieberding of Cincinnati; a sister, Dorothy Bloemer of Fort Mitchell; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Alma May Parker, 89, of Highland Heights, died at 2:44 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Ralph Parker, died in 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie Tieman of Erlanger; sons, Winford "Winnie" Parker of Erlanger and Frank Kratzmeier of Covington; a sis ter, Ruby Bay of Erlanger; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Grand View Ceme tery, Mentor.

Bethel Rees, 95, of Brooksville, died Saturday at her home. She was a retired teacher and a member of Brooksville United Methodist Church. Her husband, Rupert S. Rees, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Lt. Col. William Helton, USAF (Ret.), of Duluth, Minn.; daughters, Carolyn Ann Rees of Brooksville and Sandra Sue Rees of Lexington; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Foster. Memorials are suggested to Lenoxburg Cemetery, Foster, Ky. 41043.

Carl Johnson Rigg, 88, of Augusta, died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday at Augusta Health Care Center. He was a machine operator with Clopay Corp., Augusta, and a member of Augusta Baptist Church, Grand Lodge of Kentucky F&AM in Brooksville, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Covington, Tri-County Shrine Club in Maysville, Cynthiana Chapter No. 17 RAM, Jeffries Council No. 33 R&SM; and VFW Post No. 9535 in Augusta. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. His wives, Besie King and Nellie Hayes Rigg, both preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daugh ter, Barbara Browning of Falmouth; a sister, Anna More land of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Augusta Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Au gusta, and from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to Augusta Baptist Church, Augusta, Ky. 41001.

Elaine Schneider, 41, of Alexandria, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was an employee of AT&T and a volunteer with The Point, Covington.

Survivors include her parents, Albert and Mary Schneider of Alexandria; sisters, Rose Class of Wilder and Jan Tallarigo of Highland Heights; and brothers, Butch Schneider and Eric Schneider, both of Fort Thomas.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. A reception will follow the Mass in the school cafeteria. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to the Point, 104 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011; St. Mary Church Adopt-A-Student, 121 W. Main St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001; or Bishop Brossart High School, Jefferson & Grove Sts., Alexandria, Ky. 41001. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Edward B. Schroer, 67, of Newport, died at 10:06 a.m. Saturday at his home.

He was a custodian with Newport High School and a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport and the St. Stephen Holy Name Society and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Hermina Levine Schroer; daughters, Vickie Holt of Cincinnati, Sue Dalton of Union, Mary Kohrs of Independence, Nancy McCoy of Warsaw, Joyce Wilson of Covington, Julie Bivens and Judy Schroer, both of Newport; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Church, New port. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlen kamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, St. Bernard, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Ken tucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Charles William Sroufe, 79, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired employee of Ladish Co., and a member of Neave United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star No. 142 and St. Andrews Lodge No. 18. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Clark Sroufe; and a daughter, Karen Sroufe of Nashville, Tenn.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Neave Cemetery, Bracken County. Memorials are suggested to Neave United Methodist Church, in care of Doris McKinney, 2825 Willow-Neave Road, Brooksville, Ky. 41004.

Norma Jean Steenken, 71, of Erlanger, died at 2:07 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Steenken; a son, Gregory Steenken of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Cheryl Steenken of Elsmere, Karen Alexander of Florence and Kathy Stone of Burlington; a brother, Gearld Bey of Covington; a sister, Dorothy Riffle of Covington; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Margery Lea Sullivan, 80, of Florence, died Sunday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a home maker, a member of the Florence Christian Church, the Quilter's Club and Hugenot Society. A son, Michael Sullivan, died in 1960. A daughter, Peggy Sullivan, died in 1992.

Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Sullivan; sons, Dennis Sullivan of Burlington and Tim Sullivan of Villa Hills; a sister, Marian Mardis of Wadsworth, Ohio; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Buri al will be in Florence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Fairhaven Rescue Mission, 260 Pike St., P. O. Box 761, Covington, Ky. 41012.

Dorothy Mae Vaughn, 64, of Augusta, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Minerva Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Louis Vaughn; daughters, Debbie Lynn White of Brooksville, Tina Jane Applegate of Tollesboro, Lana White of Augusta and Christie Taylor of Ripley, Ohio; sons, Louis William Vaughn of Ripley, Bill Thourghman of Tollesboro, and Harry Lee Vaughn and Adam Teegarden, both of Augusta; sisters, Pauline Jimison and Susan Brierly, both of Russellville, Ohio, Phyllis Mitchell of Georgetown, Ohio, Jean White of Foster, Bonnie Fite of Maysville and Kathy Fultz of Lexington; a brother, Billy Hamilton of Wilmington, Ohio; seven grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
