Lewis Lanier, made decorative glass

Lewis H. Lanier was a man of ideas, the kind of person who was always thinking of new ways to do things and willing to change careers when the opportunity arose.
A longtime supervisor at Premier Industries in Covington, he later went into business with his son, Bruce Lanier, creating Huff-N-Puff Glassblowers in Ludlow. Mr. Lanier, 85, died Thursday at his home in Erlanger.

Mr. Lanier, a graduate of Newport High School, served in the Army during World War II with the 741st Tank Battalion, crossing the English Channel with American troops on D-Day and seeing service in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia.

After the war, he returned to Premier Industries, which manufactured paper products at Second Street and Madison Avenue in Covington. He became a shop superintendent and developed several types of machines used by the company.

One had soda straws in wrappers with humorous or personal sayings on them. Mr. Lanier and his son, Bruce, took the straws to Gatlinburg, Tenn., where they sold them on the streets.

While there, Bruce Lanier got to know some people blowing and selling decorative glass.

He learned that trade and opened a shop at 33 Pike St., Covington, with his father later joining the business and learning how to blow decorative glass. They later moved the business to 216 Elm St., where it still operates.

"It was great working with my dad, " Bruce Lanier said. "He worked with me for about 25 yea rs before retiring about five years ago.

"We did a lot of traveling to shows where we sold our decorative glass, " Bruce Lanier said. "We traveled together throughout Michigan and northern Ohio. To have a chance to spend that tim e with my father was very special."
