Horace Venable, postal examiner, volunteer and loved his grandkids

Horace C. Venable of Fort Thomas didn't sit around during his retirement after more than 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service.

He found time to volunteer at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. Specifically, he found more than 8, 000 hours of time to volunteer.

Mr. Venable was a faithful member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, and collected stamps.

"But his big hobby was his grandchildren, " said a son, William Venable of Fort Thomas.

"He was really involved in their lives."

Horace Venable died Friday morning at St. Luke Hospital East. He was 92 years old.

Mr. Venable lived in St. Louis before moving to Northern Kentucky when he was about 9 years old.

He worked more than four decades for the Postal Service in Cincinnati.

He started out with an administrative job and, by the time he retired in the 1970s, had worked his way up to the position of examiner.

As an examiner, he traveled to post offices in different cities to do what amounted to an internal audit of supplies - such as stamps - and procedures.

When Mr. Venable began volunteering at St. Luke Hospital East, he originally delivered mail. Eventually he manned the reception desk.

William Venable said his father probably would have resisted the idea of being the subject of a newspaper article.

"He was kind of a private person, quiet and gentle, " he said.

"He was the kind of guy who didn't burden you with his problems.

"Everybody thought of him as just a pleasant kind of guy who was delightful to be around."

Horace Venable and his wife, Eva Marie Venable, had been married 55 years when she died in 1994.

Besides William Venable, the elder Mr. Venable is survived by sons, Robert Venable of Fort Thomas and Charles Venable of Deer Park, Ohio; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
