Ray Price, ex-mayor, caregiver

Whether he was serving Erlanger as its mayor or providing care to a family member who was ill, Ray Price Jr. was there when he was needed. Throughout his life he was steadfast in his devotion to his family, his work and his community.

"In those years (as mayor) he was extremely devoted to serving the city, " said his son, Ken Price of Danville.

"I remember when he first became mayor of Erlanger (in the mid-1960s), they were meeting in a small building on Erlanger Road. He was instrumental in getting the new city building built where it is today."

Mr. Price died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 80 years old.

He worked for about 40 years as an accountant and controller with Union Central Life Insurance Co., Cincinnati, before retiring in 1985. It was the only job he ever held.

Some of his most important work was as a caregiver to his wife, Louise Price, who preceded him in death, and to other family mem bers.

"He was devoted to his family, " Ken Price said. "My mother went through a long illness, and he was a great caregiver to her.

"He was quiet, reserved, unassuming ... a very gentle and caring man."

Mr. Price was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

He was also an avid golf er, whose enjoyment for the game exceeded his ability.

"My father started out as a baseball player, and he always maintained a kind of a baseball swing instead of a golf swing, " Ken Price said with a chuckle. "He was a somewhat frustrated golfer, as many people are."

Another of Mr. Price's son's, Denneth Price, preceded him in death. Survivors include two granddaughters.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park. No visitation is planned. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Margaret J. Bickers, 82, of Carrollton, died Friday at King's Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Carrollton Wesleyan Church. Her husband, William Bickers, a daughter, Cheryl Bickers, and a son, Tom Bickers, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include another son, Leroy Bickers of Carrollton; daughters, Frances Dermon and Linda Perkins, both of Carrollton; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

George J. Burke, 89, of Cold Spring, died at 12:15 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired maintenance worker with Westwood School, Cincinnati, and a former employee of Electric Auto Lite Co., Cincinnati.

He was a member of St. Victor Court of Catholic Order of Foresters. His wife, Rose P. Burke, died in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Rita A. Burke; a daughter, Nancy A. Carlton of Ross, Ohio; a son, Larry G. Burke of Cincinnati; stepdaughters, Anita Sandfoss of Mentor, Maria Anderson of West Chester, Ohio, and Tina Nussbaum of Edgewood; a stepson, Michael Anderson of Houston; a brother, William Burke of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Saint Bernard, Ohio.

Gladys Burns, 93, of Williamstown, died Friday at Grant Manor, Williamstown. Her husband, Carroll Burns, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Snow of Cincinnati.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.

Joseph A. Cain, 64, of Bennington, Ind., formerly of Warsaw, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a former owner of Tri State Suspension Co. and a former bus driver with Gallatin County Schools.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Cain; a daughter, Tina Stewart of Warsaw; a brother, Bud Cain of Maygank, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Gallatin County Life Squad or Gallatin County Fire Department, both at Warsaw, Ky. 41095. Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.

Lillian F. Carnes, 82, of Williamstown, died Sunday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

E. Darrell Collins, 61, of Covington, died Friday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Mary Catherine Dugan, 83, of Latonia, died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a retired sales clerk with the McAlpin's department store in downtown Cincinnati and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Her husband, Donald Joseph Dugan, died in 1982.

Survivors include sons, Dennis Dugan of Orlando, Fla., and Gary Dugan of Wilder; a brother, Jack Bitters of Latonia; a sister, Joann Kemphaus of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Rosedale Manor, 4250 Glenn Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Helen Ryan Gallenstein, 90, of Maysville, died Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a clerk with Ryan's Drug Store, Begley's and Rite Aid drug stores and was a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.

Survivors include sons, Jim Joe Gallenstein of Maysville and Glenn M. Gallenstein of Louisville; five grandsons and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Church, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Brell Funeral Home, Maysville. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick School, 318 Limestone St., Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Mary Lou Green, 60, of Carrollton, died Saturday at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Second Consolidated Baptist Church, Warsaw.

Survivors include a daughter, Lena Michelle Green; a sister, Emmy Green of Carrollton; brothers, Lee Green and Clifford Green, both of Warsaw, and Connely Green of Madison, Ind.; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Second Consolidated Baptist Church, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Consolidated Second Baptist Cemetery, Warsaw. June Marie Jones Griffin, 68, of Warsaw, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital, Florence.

She was a homemaker and a member of Big Bone Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Ruth Lyons Quilting Club. Her husband, Harrison Griffin; a daughter, Martha Griffin; and a son, Robert Griffin, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Everett Griffin of Independence, Eddie Griffin, Gary Randall Griffin and Donald Eugene Griffin, all of Warsaw, Johnny Virgil Griffin of Union; daughters, Shirley Clawson of Hickory, N.C., Rita Faye Carpenter of Carrollton, Vivian Sorrell of Glencoe, and Helen Mayhew and Linda Griffin, both of Warsaw; 27 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Big Bone Cemetery, Union. Memorials are suggested to June Griffin Memorial Fund, in care of Bank of Kentucky, 116 Stephenson Mill Road, Walton, Ky. 41094.

Christopher Allan Haines, 45, of Hebron, died Friday at Jewish Hospital Kenwood, Cincinnati.

He was a self-employed information systems worker and a member of Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park. He was president of the church's computer ministry and president of the Wyndemere Homeowners Association. He was a volunteer with the Leukemia Society and First Connection Partners in Cancer.

Survivors include his wife, Paula Vanlandingham Haines; his father and stepmother, Lawrence Haines Sr. and Marian Haines of Cincinnati; and a brothers, Lawrence Haines Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakeside Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 105 W. Fourth St., Fourth and Race Tower, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202; or Lakeside Christian Church, 195 Buttermilk Pike, Lakeside Park, Ky. 41017.

Rev. George Edward Hart Jr., 79, of Covington, died Thursday at Clermont Nursing and Convalescent Center, Milford, Ohio. He was a retired minister at Butler Methodist Church, Concord Methodist Church, Tower Methodist Church, Dayton, Salem Methodist Church, Newport, Shinkle United Methodist Church, Covington, Falmouth United Methodist Church and California United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife Thelma Hart of Covington; daughters, Bertha Ann Kelly of Mount Carmel, Ohio, and Ruth Amelia Harmeling of Batavia, Ohio; six grandchildren and a great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling the arrangements.

Mabel Irene Hempfling, 87, of Erlanger, died Sunday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Donald B. Howard, 70, of Augusta, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday at his home. He was a construction worker, a farmer, and a member of Highland Christian Church where he was an elder. He was a member of the Bracken Memorial cemetery board, and a member of Ohio Operating Engineers, Germantown Lions Club and Milford Masonic Lodge. He was a past member of the Southern States Board.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Mae Cox Howard; daughters, Darlene Wallace of Berlin and Ruth Weissman of Augusta; a son, Darrell Howard of Augusta; a brother, Shirley Howard of Williamstown; sisters, Mabel Howard Newman of Milford and Vernetta Howard Hamilton of Taylor Mill; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Christian Church, Bracken County. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Richard Keller, 68, of Fort Thomas, died at 1 p.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired computer technician with IBM, Cincinnati, and a member of the Northern Kentucky Ham Club.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Birkley Keller; daughters, Barbara Wiedeman and Carol Buemi, both of Dayton, and Mary Keller and Jeannie Keller, both of Fort Thomas; a son, David Keller of Fort Thomas; and a grandson.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Newport Catholic Scholarship Fund, 13 Carothers Road, Newport, Ky. 41071; or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

Marion Eugene Knox, 78, of Little River, S.C., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Friday at Seacoast Medical Center in Little River. He was a tool and die maker with Knox Machine Tool Co., a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Elsmere, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Dorothy F. Knox, died in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Pauley of Edgewood; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Highland Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Joseph John Kroboth, 61, of Hebron, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a manager with Cunningham Graphics and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Donahue Kroboth; sons, Mark Kroboth and Michael Kroboth, both of Chicago, and Timothy Kroboth of Raleigh, N.C.; his parents, Joseph and Anna Kroboth of Lake Placid, Fla.; and brothers, Robert Kroboth of Miami, James Kroboth of Sarasota, Fla., and Jack Kroboth of Melbourne Beach, Fla.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. David Allen Kuhl, 32, of Bellevue, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a cook.

Survivors include sisters, Laura Mae Kuhl of Bellevue, Becky Ann Kuhl of Dayton, Tracy Neff of Fort Thomas, Bonnie Williams of Elsmere and Connie Grothaus of Alexandria; and brothers, Dan Kuhl and Larry Kuhl, both of Newport.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to David Kuhl Memorial Fund, in care of Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, 822 York St., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Carl T. McFarland, 64, of Anderson Township, Ohio, died Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. He was a bookbinder.

Survivors include his sons, Brian McFarland of Anderson Township and Kenny McFarland of Richmond; daughters, Debbie Watson of Danville, Diane Hilleary of Tucson, Ariz., and Gina McFarland and Sabrina McFarland, both of Covington; a brother, Eddie McFarland of Sulphur; 12 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at T.P. White Funeral Home, Mount Washington, Ohio. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Celia Mills, 97, of Edgewood, died Saturday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Golden Age Social Club, Edgewood. Her husband, Charles Clifford Mills, died in 1977.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Martin and Pat Holten, both of Edgewood, Norma Brauch and Margie Dirr, both of Independence; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Independence. Memorials are suggested in the form of Masses or to the charity of the donor's choice. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.

Robert Lee Nichols Jr., 62, of Dayton, died at 3:13 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired manager with Michel Tire Co., Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Mary F. Nichols; sons, Jerry Scully and Robert Lee Nichols III, both of Dayton, and David Scully of Latonia; daughters, Linda Miller of Newport, Norma Boling and Barbara Racke, both of Dayton, Ramona Thomas of Fort Thomas and Sharon Scully of Cold Spring; brothers, William Tyree of Cincinnati, Jesse Nichols and Mark Nichols, both of Alexandria, Terry Nichols of Claryville; sisters, Ann Miller of Cincinnati, Delora Harbison of Fort Thomas and Lisa Bowling of Verona; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Charles Raum, 82, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.

Sarah Ann Schwenke, 76, of Union, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of All Saints Church, Walton.

Survivors include her husband, Norman Schwenke; daughters, Carol Lampl and Linda Manning, both of Union; sons, Robert and Russell Schwenke, both of Union; a brother, John Scheitz of Palatine, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at All Saints Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to All Saints Church Building Fund, 62 Needmore St., Walton, Ky. 41094.

Edith "Edie" Staggs, 92, of Latonia, died at 11:43 a.m. Saturday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a retired counter worker with Terrace Hilton Hotel, Cincinnati, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia. She was a member of the Pohlmann-Linnemann VFW Post No. 1484 Ladies Auxiliary in Park Hills, and played piano at the Old Bavarian Beer Gardens in Covington, senior citizens events and during Bernie Moorman's political campaigns.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Voila Wainscott, 63, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a member of Hesler Assembly of God, Owen County.

Survivors include brothers, Kenneth, Frankie and Jerry Wainscott, all of Owenton, Jackie Wainscott of Geraldine, Ala., Bobby Wainscott of Frankfort and Darrell Wainscott of Cincinnati; and sisters, Dorothy Perkins of Owenton and Brenda Jones of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hesler Assembly of God. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Hesler Assembly of God, 25 Breck Road, Owenton, Ky. 40359. McDonald Funeral Home, Owenton, is handling arrangements.
