Wanda Ross, 'strong leader'

Wanda Frances Ross, 67, of Mays Lick, who served as postmaster of the community for 14 years, died of cancer Tuesday evening at her home.

She was a member of Mays Lick Christian Church and was active in the Mason County Homemakers and many other civic and volunteer organizations.

"She was a strong leader in the community, " said Mrs. Ross' daughter, Karen Myers of Wellington, Fla.

"Whenever anyone needed someone to organize a community event, they called on her. She also helped form the first fire department in Mays Lick."

Mason County residents often turned to Mrs. Ross to help them through difficult times.

"She would be there for people morning, noon and night, " said Mrs. Myers. "She always knew what to do for people who were hurting. She was so optimistic."

Mrs. Ross' husband of 51 years, former Mason County Judge-Executive Billy Ross, credited his wife with inspiring his career.

"She was a motivator and encouraged me, " he said.

Mrs. Ross enjoyed meeting and chatting with people, both in her hometown and in her many travels.

"She was very adventuresome, " said Mrs. Myers. "She always had a funny story to tell and make people laugh. She had an ability to elicit wonderful things from people.

"She had a gift of hospitality. She loved entertaining and took great delight in making other people happy."

Other survivors include daughters Barbara Boone-Poe of Maysville and Meri-Beth Banks of Lexington; a son, Billy Keith Ross of Newcastle, Ind.; brothers Bronson Mullikin of Tennessee and Paul Mullikin of Lafayette, Ind.;, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mays Lick Christian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.

Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, is handling arrangements.

Michael Lee Bush, 24, of Imperial, Mo., died Saturday in Imperial.

Survivors include his parents, Laura Jane Martin Bush of Imperial and Donald Bush of Edwardsville, Ill.; a brother, William Bush of St. Charles, Mo.; and grandparents, Everett and Lorraine Bush of Hazard.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Anna Pearl Traylor Collins, 66, of Lexington, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her first husband, Earl Perkins, died in 1989.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Collins; sons, Ricky Perkins of Oklahoma, Morris Perkins of Cynthiana, Robert Perkins of Lexington and Donald Noland of Florence; daughters, Brenda Perkins of Honduras, Doris Wagers of Owenton, Alice Marie Perkins of Elkhart, Ind., and Judy Darlene Northcutt of Florence; a brother, Donald Eugene Traylor of Independence; a sister, Pat Howard of Fort Pierce, Fla.; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family to defray the cost of arrangements.

Albert W. Ehrman, 89, of Park Hills, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was an independent contractor and a retired ceramic tile setter, a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright and the Legion of Mary. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A daughter, Diane Wells, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Estelle M. Ehrman; a son, William Ehrman of Park Hills; sisters, Emma Neimester and Lillian "Dolly" Nichols, both of Cincinnati; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Parkinson's Wellness Center, University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, P. O. Box 670525, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Robert P. Gibson, 86, of Lexington, died Wednesday in Richwood.

Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Margaret K. McFarland Glass, 94, of Elsmere, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired nurse's aid with St. Charles Care Center, Covington, and a member of Elsmere Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school classes at the church and played the church organ. A son, John Allen Glass, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Glass Gaunt of Elsmere; sisters, Arva J. McIntosh of Florence and Doris Quincey of Hamilton, Ohio; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Porter Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Elsmere Baptist Church, 250 Garvey Ave., Elsmere, Ky. 41018.

Virginia A. Hogan, 71, of Newport, died at 1:01 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired bookkeeper with Multi-Craft Printing Co., Newport, and a member of Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Her husband, James E. Hogan, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Baute of Burlington; sons, Mike Hogan of Newport and Jim Hogan of Alexandria; a brother, Charles Baker of Covington; a sister, Judy Osburg of Newport; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Jasmine M. Israel-Roetting, 3 months, daughter of Ujine Israel and Nicole Roetting of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Other survivors include grandparents, Dee Roetting of Elsmere, Gregory Roetting of Cincinnati, Marvin Manor of Cincinnati and Rachel Israel of Colorado.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Herbert "Dale" Kidd, 51, of Independence, died Tuesday at his home. He was an engineer with Butternut Bread, and a member of Bradford Masonic Lodge No. 123, Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Nadine Kidd; a son, Herbert Dale Kidd Jr. of Crittenden; daughters, Peggy Cain of Independence, Paula Haney of Aurora, Ind., Patricia Biddle of Burlington and Penny Eminhizer of Hamilton; sisters, Glynda Hensley of Independence, Betty Trenary of Corinth and Connie Hurt of Hazard; a brother, Dwayne Hensley of Independence; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 7:45 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Ages Cemetery, Harlan.

Allan Walton Kittle, 54, of Florence, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a security guard with Pickerton Burns Co., formerly with L.N. Concrete, and was a member of Cornerstone Church of God, Erlanger.

Survivors include his wife, Carol L. Lavrinc Kittle; sons, Allan Kittle Jr., Kevin Kittle and Jamie Kittle, all of Florence; brothers, Steve Kittle of Petersburg and Wayne Lee Snelling of Cincinnati; her mother, Marily Kittle of Petersburg; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Friday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Cornerstone Church of God, 3413 Hillcrest Drive, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Joan Lombard, 71, of Villa Hills, died Tuesday at her home. She was a manager with the Internal Revenue Service.

Survivors include a broth er, Kenneth Lombard of Howell, N.J.

Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation was at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to Institutes for the Achievements of Human Potential, 8801 Stenton Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. 19038. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.

Janet C. Messmer, 67, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at Orange Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Fla.

Arrangements are pending at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Katherine Nevils, 73, of Carrollton, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Ghent Second Baptist Church. She was a member of the church choir. Her husband, Gilbert Nevils, died Sept. 3.

Survivors include sons, Kayvon Nevils of Louisville, Gilbert Nevils and Ben Nevils, both of Carrollton; daughters, Barbara Robinson of Cincinnati, Delower Cole of Arlington, Texas, and Laura Coulter of Nicholasville; brothers, Bud Matthews of Springville and Charles Matthews of Franklin; sisters, Genell Martinez of Brooklyn, N.Y., Emma Matthews of Carrollton and Debra Matthews of Russellville; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ghent Second Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, and noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Ghent Second Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ralph W. Overstreet Jr., 60, of Covington, died at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

He was a disabled truck driver with Overnite Transportation, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Overstreet; sons, Ralph W. Overstreet III of Independence and Jerry W. Overstreet of Covington; daughters, Kimberly A. Hall of Latonia and Cheri Staub of Latonia; brothers, Ronald Overstreet of Cincinnati and Donald Overstreet of Latonia; a sister, Kathleen Bullock of Taylor Mill; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Billy Popejoy, 70, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Hospice of Blue Ash, Cincinnati. He was a retired employee of Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a member of the board of Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member the Telephone Pioneers Speakers Bureau, and was the 2000 Telephone Pioneers of America Cincinnatian of the Year. He was a former board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, a lector and usher with St. Ann and St. James churches in Cincinnati, a former president of St. Ann Church's Holy Name Society and a current member of Little Flower Church, Cincinnati. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Finch Popejoy; a daughter, Sue Rodish of Crescent Springs; sons, Tim Popejoy of San Diego, Jim Popejoy and Mike Popejoy, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Betty Jane Henritze of Huntsville, Ala., and Nancy Crabtree of Portland, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Little Flower Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Nurre Brothers Funeral Home-White Oak, Cincinnati. Burial will be St. James Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 10901 Reed Hartman Highway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.

Phyllis Runion, 55, of Crescent Springs, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday at her home. She was an assistant at a nursing home.

Survivors include a son, Brian Runion of Cincinnati; a daughter, Carla Tolbert of Fort Mitchell; a brother, Reaford Coleman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters, Judy Snodgrass of Maysville and Linda Plummer of Crescent Springs; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Friday at Grassy Creek Baptist Church, Pikeville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Burial will be in Coleman Family Cemetery, Pikeville.

Mary Elizabeth Shields, 93, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Ludlow, died Sunday in Fort Lauderdale. She was the owner of Fairview Inn in Bromley and was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. Her husband, Carlos P. Shields, died in 1955.

Survivors include a son, Carlos J. Shields of Fort Lauderdale; a sister, Dora V. Constiner of Burlington; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Benjamin Clifford Tinnell, 82, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Covington, died Sept. 14 at his home. He was a businessman, a former professor at East Tennessee University, and was a member of the Eastern Kentucky University Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Tinnell; daughters, Betty Tinnell and Carol Gangstead, both of Scottsdale; sons, Ron Tinnell and Allen Tinnell, both of Scottsdale; a sister, Winona Wiehe of Lockland, Ohio; a brother, Howard Tinnell of Fort Mitchell; and eight grandchildren.

Services were Sept. 17 at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, Scottsdale.

Rebecca Hamilton Games Warfield, 85, of Crestview Hills, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired employee of the Kentucky Department of Revenue and a contributing writer with the State Journal's "I Remember When" column. She was a member of Bridgeport Christian Church and Capital City Rockhounds.

Survivors include a son, Michael T. Games of Florence; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Friday at LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home, Frankfort. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Rayann Ruholl Webster, 43, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Christopher Webster and Derrick A. Webster, both of Williamstown; a daughter, Stephanie A. Webster of Williamstown; brothers, Frank Ruholl of Metairie, La., Joe E. Ruholl and Nick G. Ruholl, both of Williamstown; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
