Joseph F. Thoma Sr., shared sense of humor

When the going got tough, Joseph F. Thoma Sr. would use his sense of humor to help people forget life's problems.

The normally reserved Mr. Thoma was always quick with a joke if the opportunity presented itself, a trait friends and family grew to cherish.

Stationed in South Korea shortly after the Korean War, Mr. Thoma used his humor to brighten the mood of fellow soldiers, thousands of miles from home.

"There were still a lot of bad things going on (in Korea), but he thought the best way to deal with it was through his sense of humor, " said his wife, Vonda Thoma.

Mr. Thoma, 63, of Erlanger, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. The former Duro Paper Bag Company employee also was a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.

After leaving the Army in 1965, Mr. Thoma returned to Northern Kentucky and his No. 1 priority - family.

Always putting his children's concerns before his own, he used family trips to visit places his children wanted to see, such as the Great Smoky cq Mountains.

Mr. Thoma also was an avid sports fan.

Mrs. Thoma said her husband spent many evenings and afternoons watching football and baseball with the family and attending every sporting event he could in which their children participated.

"He always made sure his children were taken care of, " said Mrs. Thoma. "He was very protective and always tried to steer them in the right direction."

While he always cheered for his hometown Reds and Bengals, he also grew to admire the Chicago Cubs, his wife said.
