Irvin Dickerson, had role in WWII history

Irvin Curtis Dickerson was a voracious reader of history, perhaps because 60 years ago he played a small role in it.

On Dec. 7, 1941, while on duty as a communications specialist at Presidio Army headquarters in San Francisco, Calif., Mr. Dickerson was the first person on the mainland to receive, decode and deliver the message that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor and thus started World War II.

Using the skills he acquired while working as a telegrapher at Union Pacific Railroad in Clearfield, Utah, Mr. Dickerson's Navy service in the war included writing a cryptography manual for the U.S. Army and a stint as an instructor of communications at Fort Hood, Texas.

"He always had an interest in telegraphing, and he put it to use for his country, " said Stacey Dickerson, a son from Fort Mitchell. "When he got older, he even taught Morse Code to Boy Scouts to help them earn their merit badges."

Mr. Dickerson, 83, died Monday at his home in Fort Mitchell. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Com. in Salt Lake City and Bartlesville, Okla.; Tiger Transit in Bartlesville; and Verdin Bell Co., Cincinnati. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lakeside Park.

After the war, Mr. Dickerson returned to his native Utah to raise his family. He worked at several jobs to provide for his wife and seven children, including stints at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Salt Lake City and Bartlesville, Okla., and Tiger Transit, also in Bartlesville. He finally settled in the Cincinnati area after taking a job with Verdin Bell Co.

Friends and family say Mr. Dickerson was extremely selfless and loving. While caring for his own large family, he took in and raised several relatives who were orphaned.

"He wanted to make sure his family had an easier life than he did, " Stacey Dickerson said. "He succeeded in doing that."

Other survivors include his wife, Allene Dickerson; sons, Richard Dickerson of Carlsbad, Calif., Curtis Dickerson of Mesa, Ariz., Joel Dickerson of Owensboro, Layne Dickerson of Bartlesville and Bradley Dickerson of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Julia Hobbs of Rexburg, Idaho; 34 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
