Beatrice Bertolone Atkins, 75, 'always volunteering'

Beatrice Bertolone Atkins loved her country in good times and in bad.

"Certainly, to the amazement about this time that's going on within our lives about patriotism, she was such a patriotic person, always volunteering, and a very caring soul, " said her nephew, Tony Bertolone, of North Avondale.

Mrs. Atkins, 75, of Erlanger, died Thursday at Villa Spring of Erlanger.

She was a section chief of the Taxpayer Relation Branch of the IRS, Covington.

Her spare time, though, was spent volunteering.

She was a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Erlanger, past president of Ladies Auxiliary of VFW for the state of Kentucky, past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grand Kentucky Military Order of the Cooties, and state treasurer for th e Ladies Auxiliary for the state of Kentucky.

"She has always been kind of a caretaker within our family as well as outside our family, " Bertolone said.

"She touched so many lives based on what she was involved in."

Her husband, Thomas Junior Atkins, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughters, Beverly Cvelbar of Solon, Ohio, and Toni Kick of Akron, Ohio; brothers, Michael Bertolone, Joseph Bertolone, Tony Bertolone and Angelo Bertolone, all of Cleveland; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to Crescent Springs Presbyterian Church, 710 Western Reserve Rd., Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017.

Keith A. Barnes, 51, of Covington, died at 7:43 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a Marine Corps veteran, a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, Newport, and a member of St. John Church, Covington, and the North American Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha Elsbernd Barnes of Covington; a son, Lawrence J. Hoppius of Covington; daughters, Nenna Ortiz of Covington and Pyra Artmeier of Cincinnati; his father, William Barnes of Newport; brothers, Russell Barnes of Dry Ridge, Wayne Barnes of Burlington, Ku rt Barnes and Daniel Barnes, both of Dayton, and Forrest Barnes and Van Barnes, both of Fort Thomas; sisters, Lori Bestfelt of Cincinnati, Lynn Ferguson of Dayton and Candy Spars of Bellevue; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Martha Farmer, 87, of Newport, died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday at her home. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Newport, the Brighton Center Seniors and Northern Kentucky Pacesetters. Her husband, James Farmer Sr., died in 1981; a daughter, Ona Mae Gilbert, died in 1980; and son, John Farmer, died in 1991.

Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Braun of Covington, Evon Herald of Cold Spring, Kathleen Hartman of Dayton and Sharon Richardson and Karen Farmer, both of Newport; sons, James Farmer Jr . of Newport and Jack Farmer of Alexandria; 24 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Baptist Church, Sixth and Park Streets, Newport, Ky. 41071; or Brighton Center, 741 Central Ave., Newport, Ky. 41071.

Jamie Lynn Finkenstedt, 15, of Elsmere, died at 9:51 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a train near Edwards Road in Erlanger. She was a ninth grade student at Lloyd High School.

Survivors include her father, David Finkenstedt of Elsmere; her mother, Denise Finkenstedt of Burlington; sisters, Julie Nickels of Cincinnati and Jennifer Finkenstedt of Elsmere; and matern al grandfather, William Bankemper of Florence.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Charles Gabbard, 61, of Covington, died Wednesday at Clermont Nursing Center, Milford, Ohio. He was a burner for Joseph Metals, Newport.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Gabbard of Covington; a son, Charles Gabbard of Covington; sisters, Billie Jean Eversole and Georgia Rowe, both of Covington; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 10 a. m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery.

Rosemary A. Stallmeyer Huneke, 82, of Cincinnati and formerly of Newport, died Thursday a t Wesley Hall Nursing Home, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Julia Mae Morgan, 82, of Crittenden, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Life Apostolic Church, Crittenden. Her husband, Charl ie Morgan, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, James Morgan of Florence and Ernest Morgan and Harold Morgan, both of Dry Ridge; daughters, Katherine Roseberry of Butler, Fern Cason of Campbell, Ala., Lois Mulberry of Williamstown, Juanita Morgan and Daisy Hudson, both of Dry Ridge, and Violet Shinkle, Rose Holland and Barbara Vaughn, all of Crittenden; brother, Elmer Isaac of Berea; sisters, Gladys Ferguson of Manchester and Cora Rogers of Connersville, Ind.; 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will b e from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery.

Jerome H. Nickol Sr., 64, of Erlanger, died at 5 a.m. Thursday at his home.

He was retired from General Motors, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Nickol of Erlanger; daughters, Terri Fuller of Greenhill, Ohio, and Kimberly Nickol of Dayton; sons, Jerome H. Nickol Jr. of Fort Mitchell and Tony Nickol of Crittenden; brothers, Don Nickol of Reading, Ohio, and Charles Nickol and Gene Nickol, both o f Forest Park, Ohio; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. Cremation will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. There will be no visitation.

Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling the arrangements.

Lillian Mae O'Brien, 88, of Latonia and formerly of Warsaw, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harry E. O'Brien, died in 1985.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Loomis of Newport; two granddaughters and a great-grandson.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Warsaw Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling the arrangements.

Lillie J. Rowland, 59, of Cincinnati, and formerly of Northern Kentucky, died at 1:10 p.m . Thursday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a waitress at Habig Restaurant, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald L. Rowland; a son, Steve Rowland of Batesville, Ind.; a daughter, Tina Oberding of Batesville; a brother, Eddie Gosney of Norwood, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Gobel Ruth, 75, of Owenton, died Friday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was a bulldozer operator and a member of Elk Lick Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Rodney Ruth of Elkhorn City; a brother, Herbert Ruth of Owenton; sisters, Mable Hall and Dorothy Mullanix, both of Owenton; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Owenton.

Anna Lillian Smith, 94, of Fort Mitchell, died at 4:07 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann Church, Covington, and Ladies Auxiliary of John R. Little VFW Post, Fort Thomas. Her husband, Albert N. Smith Sr., died in 1969, and a daughter, Alice D. Williams, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Albert N. Smith Jr. of Villa Hills; a daughter, Ann E. Miller of For t Mitchell; brothers, John E. Humphrey of Mobile, Ala., and Fred Humphrey of Southern Pines, N.C.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann Church, West Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Harold L. Souder, 74, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired body shop manager for Key GMC and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Imojean Estridge Souder of Erlanger; daughters, Pamela Rose of Mount Olivet, Sheila Watkins of Independence and Crystal Garrett and Shirley Garza, both of Williamstown; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042; or American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.

Margaret Mary Washnock, 83, of Independence, died at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired seamstress for J.C. Penney and Coppin Company and was a member of St. Patrick Church, Taylor Mill.

Survivors include sisters, Lucille Abdon of Independence and Tillie Cammack of Erlanger.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
