Neva Gardner taught more than 35 years

Neva J. Gardner will be remembered for her quiet, humble spirit and her love of c hildren.

She was a teacher for more than 35 years, starting out in a one-room school and earning $80 a month. She retired from the Newport schools in 1971.

Mrs. Gardner, 91, of Highland Heights, died at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She had worked in the Campbell County and Newport school systems, spending most of her teaching years in third-grade classrooms.

She cared deeply for the children she taught but even more deeply for her family, said her sister Ruth Harris.

"She was a wonderful mother, sister and grandmother, " Mrs. Harris said. "Her husband was a minister, and she worked beside him. She worked for the glory of the Lord."

Mrs. Gardner "was very agreeable and pleasant and never complained, even though she had lots of reason to, " her sister said.

She grew up in rural Campbell County before the Great Depression and "was poor, but never knew it." Her husband, William Taylor Gardner, died of cancer in 1957, leaving her with two small children to raise.

"She had lots of things happen to her. She got to see a lot of interesting things and a lot of uninteresting things, " her sister said, noting that she had lived nearly a century. "We're going to miss her greatly."

In addition to her sister, of Cold Spring, survivors include sons, James William Gardner of Louisville and Truett Harris Gardner of Highland Heights; a sister, Edna Chalcraft of Cold Spring; and two grandsons, Brian and Jamie Gradner.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Harold Dwight Bell, 42, of Latonia Lakes, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Dottie M. Dixon, 61, of Crescent Springs, died at 1:05 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a former employee of the Wendy's restaurant in Florence and a waitress with Cain Tucky Grill, Florence, and Frisch's. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills. Her husband, William H. Dixon, died in 1978.

Survivors include a son, Mark Willen of Florence; daughters, Tammy Ervin of Bellevue and Annette Dixon of Crescent Springs; brothers, Nelson E. Boyd Jr. and Archie Boyd, both of Independence; sisters, Mary Styles of Paducah and Janie Turner of Taylor Mill; and one granddaughter.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.

Helen "Nanny" Louise Elliott, 72, of Boaz, Ala., died Saturday at Riverview Regional Hospital in Boaz.

Her husband, Robert Van Elliott, and sons, Robert Van Elliott Jr., Terry Collins and Jimmy Collins, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Timothy Collins of Germany, Austin Carroll, Sam Bates and Steven Bates; stepsons, Donnie Elliott of Kentucky, Davis Elliott of Texas and Van Elliott of Ohio; daughters, Cynthia Hodges of Kentucky, Patricia Rogers of the state of California, and Katie Maddox; stepdaughters, Barbar O. Moore of Ohio and Bonnie Quarles of Kentucky; brothers, William Charles Race Jr. of California and Billie Lee Race of Oregon; sisters, Jean Harrington of North Carolina, Shirley Zerkle of Florida and Faye Caudill of Texas; and 16 grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Boaz. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 tonight at Carr Funeral Home, Boaz. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Boaz.

Geneva Ham, 87, of Florence, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker and a member of Latonia Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star Emera Chapter No. 392. Her husband, Steward Ham, died in 1996.

Survivors include a sister, Lillian Prince of Covington.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Marcella Fern Harris, 96, of Newport, died Saturday at Walnut Creek Care Center in Kettering, Ohio.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Newport.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Harris of Fort Thomas; daughters, Gwen Cummins of Dayton, Ohio, Jean Valentine of San Antonio and June VanVactor of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Pearl M. Keck, 86, of Fort Wright, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

She was a homemaker. Her first husband, Marcus L. Grant, died in 1961. Her second husband, Albert N. Keck, died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Donald Grant of Crestview Hills; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at the center. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.

Mary B. Kelly, 80, of Villa Hills, died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Her husband, Paul Kelly, died in 1997.

Survivors include a son, Dan Kelly of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Brenda Augustin of Cincinnati, Mary Stevens of Fort Mitchell, Colleen Kramer of Fort Wright and Nancy Kelly of Villa Hills; sisters, Rose Kelly and Katie Case, both of Crittenden; and 11 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Fannie Landrum, 90, of Covington, died Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Angeline Locke, 64, of Verona, died at 7 a.m. Friday in an automobile accident north of Walton on Interstate 75.

She was a transportation aide with Boone County Schools. A son, Thomas Daniel Locke, died in 1987.

Survivors include her husband, John Harold Locke; a son, John Locke Jr. of Crittenden; and two grandsons.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Eugene A. Long Sr., 67, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died 8:55 a.m. Friday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a machinist and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include sons, Eugene A. Long Jr. of Covington, Louis T. Long of Cincinnati and Michael W. Long of Phoenix; a daughter, Regina Souders of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at Dayton, Ohio, National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Robert McIntosh, 76, of Fairfield, Ohio, died Saturday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Frank Edward Metcalfe, 87, of Geneva, Ill., formerly of Covington, died Saturday at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva.

He was a retired window treatment salesman. His wife, Luella Kendall Metcalfe, died in 1999.

Survivors include a son, Gerald Edward Metcalfe of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a daughter, Sandra Lee Peluso of St. Charles, Ill.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Mildred Meyer, 81, of Latonia, died at 1:58 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

George E. Molique Jr., 79, of Erlanger, died at 2:28 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was a retired machinist with R. A. Jones Co., a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs, Condo Villagers of Erlanger and the Irish Rovers at St. Patrick Church in Taylor Mill, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Schreck Molique; a son, George Michael Molique of Edgewood; daughters, Carol Martin and Judy Molique, both of Crescent Springs; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

James Leroy Moore, 78, of Latonia, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He was the retired owner of Moore's Barber Shop in Latonia and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Elrod Moore; a daughter, Brenda Piccirillo of Latonia; a sister, Velma Denny of Dayton, Ohio; five step-grandchildren and nine step-great- grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Neave Cemetery, Bracken County.

Othelia Moore, 80, of Falmouth, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a retired librarian with the Pendleton County Library, having retired after 28 years of service helping build the library's collection, and was a member of Morgan Christian Church.

She was a member of Northern Kentucky Community Action, Christian Women's Fellowship, Woodmen of the World and the Democratic Women's Club of Falmouth. Her husband, Thomas Moore, died in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathie Moreland of Falmouth; a brother, Donald Moore of Cynthiana; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Emma Lee Francis Rudd Mullikin, 67, of Brooksville, died at 11:47 p.m. Saturday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.

She was a homemaker. Her husband, Bert Mullikin, died in 1980.

Survivors include daughters, Michelle Clark Sallee of Brooksville, Norma Kay Mullikin of Falmouth and Ellen Fay Mullikin of Augusta; a son, William Thomas Mullikin of Brooksville; brothers, Norman Rudd and Archie Rudd; sisters, Ruby Gee and Louise Perry; and eight grandchildren.

Mildred Naegele, 93, of Bellevue, died Saturday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights.

She was a homemaker.

Dorothy B. Ostertag, 94, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Fort Thomas.

She was a retired admitting clerk with St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas and a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

She also was a past president of the Fort Thomas Women's Club and organized the St. Luke Auxiliary. She was a past president of the State Auxiliary and was active in the Women's Democratic Club. Her husband, Eugene Ostertag, and son, Frank Ostertag, both died in 1976.

Survivors include five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Vera E. Ritchie, 82, of Florence, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.

She was a manager with Woolworth Co. Her husband, Frazier Ritchie, died in 2000.

Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Dedden of Union; brothers, Elmer Stith of Lodi, Calif., Terry Stith of Edgewood and Michael Stith of Covington; sisters, Earlene Niemeyer of Crescent Springs, Bea Stith of Covington and Carla Fields of Kentucky; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. today. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Timothy Lee Thompson II, son of Timothy and Phyllis Thompson of Florence, died shortly after birth Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Lucille C. Tonnies, 89, of Newport, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann Society and the Altar Society. Her husband, George Tonnies, died in 1960.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Barth of Newport; a son, James Tonnies of West Mifflin, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Marcella Lucille Vaske, 92, of Elsmere, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Altar Society and Association of Miraculous Medal. Her husband, Harry Vaske, died in 1984.

Survivors include sons, Henry Vaske of Elsmere, Kenneth Vaske of Cleveland, Tenn., Herbert Vaske of Fort Thomas, Bernard Vaske of Walton and Raymond Vaske of Morning View; daughters, Carol Barnewall of Cocoa, Fla., Ruth Wilson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Cecilia Bramley of Petersburg, Fla., and Noreen Seiter of Edgewood; brothers, William Bolte of Elsmere, Victor Bolte and Sylvester Bolte, both of Florence; a sister, Rita Tanner of Elsmere; 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Theresa "Terry" Watts, 55, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at her home.
