Maggie Pearl Jones, owned 404 Restaurant

Maggie Pearl Jones, who owned and operated the 404 Restaurant on Pike Street in Covington, was known for her cooking.

"She was pretty much regarded as a baker, a pie maker, " said her son, Dennis Jones of Crestview Hills. "She didn't have too many who could top her. Pies were her specialty."

Mrs. Jones, 66, died at 10:08 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South. She ran the 404 restaurant from 1975 to 1983. She also was a waitress with Bob Evans Restaurants and with the Windjammer Restaurant in Springdale.

"She was just a very pleasant woman, " Mr. Jones said. "She had a very strong faith in God and tried to live her life that way. She looked for the best in everybody. She was very fair-minded."

Mrs. Jones also loved to sew and enjoyed making dolls and stuffed animals for her grandchildren.

"She was a great mom, " Mr. Jones said.

Other survivors include another son, Allen Jones of Charlestown, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pulaski Funeral Home, Somerset. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Pulaski Funeral Home. Burial is in Liberty Cemetery, Kidder.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Ada L. Abney, 68, of Covington, died at 10 a.m. Sunday at her home.

She was a retired cook with the Anchor Grill. Her husband, Elmer Abney, died Jan. 22. A daughter, Michelle Abney, died in 1985.

Survivors include daughters, Kim Burke of Covington and Lisa Gregory of Elsmere; sons, Charles Abney of Wildie, Dale Abney of Ryland Heights and Randy Abney of Covington; sisters, Opal Kates and Sally Mays, both of Richmond, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Dee Bell, 42, of Latonia Lakes, died at 1:27 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a carpet installer with D&D; Carpet, Florence, a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Covington and an Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, Hollis D. Bell of California, Ohio; a daughter, Amanda Leach of Richmond; his mother, Thelma L. Bell of Latonia Lakes; sisters, Hope Kerish of Erlanger and Jessica L. Albaugh of Taylor Mill; grandmother, Flossie B. Bell of Florence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 6056 Taylor Mill Road, Covington, Ky. 41015.

Ernest R. Bogan, 76, of Robertson County, died Sunday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired auto mechanic and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include sons, Stephen Bogan, Terry Bogan, Randall Bogan, Ernie Todd, David Bogan and Lonnie Bogan, all of Batavia, Ohio, and Darren Bogan of Robertson County; and daughters, Beverly Bogan of Batavia and Tanya Bogan of Fleming County.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Piqua Christian Church Cemetery, Robertson County. Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, is handling arrangements.

George H. Brooks Jr., 56, of Wilder, died Saturday at Lakeside Health Care Center, Highland Heights. He was a retired taxi driver, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include a son, Michael Brooks of Independence; daughters, Christine Howard of Wilder and Jennifer Humphrey of Alexandria; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati is handling arrangements.

Robert J. "Jay" Campbell, 33, of Latonia, died at 1:29 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a logistics specialist with The Gap, Erlanger, and head coach of Cincinnati Heat semi-professional football team.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya M. Clingner Campbell; sons, Robert K. Campbell and Thomas J. Campbell, both of Covington; a daughter, Traci Lee Campbell of Covington; his parents, John and Joyce Hayes of Crittenden; and a brother, Thomas Boyd Campbell of Hebron.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to Jay Campbell Memorial Fund, 45 E. 41st St., Covington, Ky. 41015.

Harold R. Foster Sr., 96, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at Highland of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. He was a retired supermarket manager with Colonial Stores, a member of Fort Thomas Men's Club and longtime treasurer of the Highland Heights Church of the Nazarene. His wife, Olive Foster, and a son, Harold Foster Jr., died in 1989 and 1998, respectively.

Survivors include a brother, John Foster of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and sisters, Ola Tucker of Cold Spring, Gertrude Morgan of Long Island, N.Y., and Virgie Kessell of Newport.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Highland Heights Church of the Nazarene, 33 Renshaw Road, Highland Heights, Ky. 41076.

William John Joseph Herze, 70, of Florence, died Monday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was a cook with the Internal Revenue Service, Covington, a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include a sister, Alma C. Malas of Beavercreek, Ohio; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were this morning at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, handled arrangements.

Fannie Landrum, 90, formerly of Covington, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include nieces, Beatrice Hammonds of Dayton, Ohio, and Thelma Cleveland of Williamstown.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.

Nora Bell Lankford, 80, of Latonia, died at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Carl Lankford, died in 1980.

Survivors include sons, Ron Lankford of Covington, Roy Helton and Harold Helton, both of New Braunfels, Texas; daughters, Pat Reiley of Florence, Ann Beeheimer of Villa Hills, Pam Lankford of Newport and Shirley Howard of Harlan; a sister, Gladys Curtis of Lexington; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Catchen Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Loyall.

Caroline Paige Mazza, daughter of Stephen G. and Murray Beth Beckman Mazza of Northern Kentucky, was stillborn Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Other survivors include a brother, Jack Mazza; a sister, Isabella Mazza; and grandparents, Ray and Kay Mazza, and Bob and Peggy Beckman.

Graveside services were Monday at St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospice, 3333 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45229. Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Robert McIntosh, 76, formerly of Fort Wright, died Saturday at Sterling House in Fairfield, Ohio. He was a retired quality control worker with Heekin Can Corp., Cincinnati.

Survivors include nephews, Guy McIntosh of Cincinnati and Jay McIntosh of Fort Thomas; and nieces, Tammy Stempfley of Hamilton, Ohio, Michelle McKee of Fort Mitchell, Julie MacDonald of Kentucky and Jody Ludmann of Fort Thomas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Keith Allen Pipes, 36, of Fort Wright, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a former horse trainer with Turfway and River Downs racing parks.

Survivors include a son, Steven Austin of New Richmond, Ohio; a daughter, Courtney Pipes of New Richmond; his parents, Brenda Freking of Fort Wright and Donald Pipes of Latonia; sisters, Cheryl Pipes and Leslie Roll, both of Latonia, Rae Jean Roberts of Naples, Fla., Charmaine Bradenburg of Crescent Springs; brothers, Timothy Freking of Grove City, Ohio, Greg Pipes of Fort Wright, Kevin Pipes of Miami and Phillip Freking of Crescent Springs; and grandmother, Thelma Haley of Latonia.

Delmar "Doc" Reed, 87, of Walton, died Saturday at his home.

He was a retired machine operator with Wiedeman Brewing Co. and a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church, Walton.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth L. Clifton Reed of Walton; daughters, Remona J. Moore, Janice L. Reed and Susan J. Davis, all of Walton; a son, Ronald W. Reed of Walton; a brother, Alpheus Reed of Crittenden; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Beaver Lick Baptist Church, Walton. Visitation is 11 a.m. today at the church. Burial will be in Hughes Chapel Cemetery, Union. Memorials are suggested to Beaver Lick Baptist Church, 11460 U.S. Highway 42, Walton, Ky. 41094.

Helen Margaret Ruddick, 91, of Newport, died Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home. She was a retired salesperson with Pogue's department store, Cincinnati, an election poll worker for the city of Newport and a member of First Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, George Ruddick, died in 1960.

Survivors include sons, George Ruddick Jr. of Cherry Hill, N.J., William Ruddick of Highland Heights and Dr. Thomas Ruddick of Dayton, Ohio; daughters, Jackie Hamm of Walton, Barbara Traylor of Independence and Sue Ray of Highland Heights; brothers, Edward Gaskill and William Gaskill, both of Trenton, N.J., and Frank Gaskill of Morrisville, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy Katz of Levittown, N.J.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

David Cecil Turner, 44, of Dayton, died Friday at his home. He was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Turner of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a son, Scott Turner of Garden Grove, Calif.; daughters, Shelly Evans of Cincinnati and Lisa Turner of Garden Grove; brothers, Ronald Turner of Hebron, William Turner and Randall Turner, both of Dayton; sisters, Joyce Koeninger of Fort Myers, Fla., Barbara Gallagher of Maysville and Cora Wehrle of Edgewood.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Marcella Lucille Vaske, 92, of Elsmere, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Henry Altar Society and Association of Miraculous Medal. Her husband, Harry Vaske, died in 1984.

Survivors include sons, Henry Vaske of Elsmere, Kenneth Vaske of Cleveland, Tenn., Herbert Vaske of Fort Thomas, Bernard Vaske of Walton and Raymond Vaske of Morning View; daughters, Carol Barnewall of Cocoa, Fla., Ruth Wilson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Cecilia Bramley of Petersburg, Ann Vaske Figueroa of Miami and Noreen Seiter of Edgewood; brothers, William Bolte of Elsmere, Victor Bolte and Sylvester Bolte, both of Florence; a sister, Rita Tanner of Elsmere; 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Wright. Theresa Watts, 55, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at her home.

She was a teacher with several local schools, including Covington Holy Cross, Holmes and Fort Thomas Highlands high schools, and the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati.

She was active in the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Watts; daughters, Jane Perkins of Independence and Wendy Lingan of Cincinnati; her mother, Mary Behrens of Chicago; a brother, Charles Behrens of Chicago; a sister, Jane St. Clair of Tucson, Ariz.; and one grandson.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight and from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
