Nettie Lane, among last Spanish-American War widows

Nettie B. Lane, one of the last Spanish-American War widows in the state, died at he r Erlanger home Tuesday at age 106.

She painted, gardened, quilted and was an active member of the Wesley Methodist Church in Ludlow for more than 75 years.

She and her husband, William Ben Lane, raised five children. He was already a veteran and 21 years her senior when they married in 1921. She was 27.

"He was so much younger than his years and my mother was older than her years," said their daughter, Anna Bell Lane of Erlanger.

"They were wonderful together."

Another daughter, Lillian Ruehrwein of Geendale, Ind., recalled her mother's rich faith and perseverance. "Everything I know about morality and Christianity, I learned from her," said Mrs. Ruehrwein.

The family home was a gathering place for relatives and friends who would stay for weeks or months.

"I never, ever heard her complain. She accepted whatever happened and went on," Mrs. Ruehrwein said.

The family lived in Bromley until they lost everything in the 1937 flood, Mrs. Ruehrwein said. Then they moved to a farm on Amsterdam Road. In 1942, tragedy struck again. Spontaneous combustion in just-harvested hay caught the barn on fire. They lost the barn and a day later smoldering sparks from the barn caught the eaves of the house on fire. Mrs. Lane was in town dealing with paperwork on the barn fire and returned to see the house collapsing in flames, her daughter said.

"When my dad came home, she looked at him and started to cry. He said 'Mother, look at your five children and consider yourself lucky.' "

The family started over, thanking God for each other, Mrs. Ruehrwein said. They moved to a bungalow in Bromley and stayed there until Mr. Lane retired from the Southern Railroad in 1948. They moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., and lived there until he died in 1957.

Mrs. Lane was never afraid to try something new. Her daughters, Anna Bell Lane and Virginia Smyly, were doing missionary work in Costa Rica. She got a visa and joined them.

While in Costa Rica, Mrs. Lane also took art lessons at the university. Throughout her retirement years she painted landscapes.

In the late 1960s, her daughters returned to Northern Kentucky, and Mrs. Lane shared a house with Anna Bell Lane, first in Fort Mitchell and then in Erlanger, for close to 30 years.

She took up chair caning in her 90s and never stopped gardening.

"Our mother was an organic gardener before it was popular," said Mrs. Ruehrwein. "She had a magic touch with flowers and vegetables."

Grace Jones of Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, was one of Mrs. Lane's students in Sunday School classes as a child.

"She was very sweet, and calm. You just loved to be around her," Mrs. Jones said.

Mrs. Lane celebrated her 106th birthday Dec. 10.
