Firefighter Walter 'Gene' Armour, served as Assembly doorkeeper

People associated with the Kentucky General Assembly remembered Walter E. "Gene" Armour at the beginning of each biennial session, even when they didn't know his name.

"The Pipe is back," Armour himself would joke, about the large tobacco pipe which seemed to be a part of his identity.

"He quit smoking several years ago, but I can remember buying him cans of tobacco," said Mr. Armour's niece, Georgia Berry.

Mr. Armour, 87, of Bromley, died Sunday morning in Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.

A chief doorkeeper for the Kentucky Senate, Mr. Armour is probably best remembered in Northern Kentucky for his years in the fire service.

He was a retired firefighter with the Veterans Administration Fire Department, Fort Thomas, a former chief of the Bromley Fire Department, and a former Kentucky deputy state fire marshal.

A close friend of former State Sen. Gus Sheehan, D-Ludlow, Mr. Armour held the doorkeeper post after his retirement. He was among the Senate and House employees who would return for regular and special sessions to aid with operations of the legislature.

"He was always cooperative and a real nice fellow," said former Kenton County Circuit Court Clerk Ed Schroeder of Ludlow. "I remember him always working the festivals in Bromley," Schroeder said.

Mr. Armour never met a stranger and liked to talk with everyone he met, said Mrs. Berry. "He would have made a good politician," she said.

In fact, Mr. Armour did hold one elective position, that of Bromley Police Court judge.

He was also a former Bromley auxiliary police officer and a marshal for the Bromley Police Department.

Unknown to many, Mr. Armour wrote poetry, and some was published.
