Heart recipient, Little League leader Harry R. Roberts served Falmouth

Harry R. Roberts never forgot that he'd been given a second chance at life with a heart transplant in 1986, and he made use of every minute.

He returned to running the Falmouth Little League, where 450 to 500 children participated for free every year. He traveled with his wife, Roberta Ann Ramsey Roberts, to hear country music in Branson, Mo., or to see the ocean at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mostly, he counted his blessings.

"We felt that he was blessed that he had all those extra years," Mrs. Roberts said.

Mr. Roberts, 70, of Falmouth, died Sunday at his home.

In 1986, he was told he had six months to live if he didn't have a heart transplant. He had had two major heart attacks and a coronary bypass, and his heart was severely damaged.

He was pale and short of breath. He could walk only short distances. The new heart changed everything.

He was able to continue his devotion to Falmouth Little League, where he made sure no player had to pay to join. Instead, he charged an entry fee for participants in a men's league and used the money to fund the Little League. He ran it for more than 40 years.

"He loved children. He said every child ought to be able to play ball if they wanted to, whether they had money or not," Mrs. Roberts said.

Mr. Roberts umpired baseball and softball games throughout the area, including a Cincinnati Reds game when major-league umpires went on strike in 1973.

He received several awards for his community activities, but he didn't like to brag. When he and his wife pre-arranged their funerals some time ago, the only activity he listed was his charter membership in the Falmouth Lions Club.

He omitted the James Griffin Community Involvement Award in 1996, the Woodmen of the World Outstanding Citizen Award in 1987 and the Pendleton County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Community Service Award in 1984.

"He was just an unassuming man," Mrs. Roberts said.

Mr. Roberts was a retired manager of Southern States Pendleton Co-op, a former Falmouth city councilman and a former chairman of the board of Falmouth Methodist Church.
