Hebron's Nannie Lee Siekman, lifelong teacher, devoted mother

Nannie Lee Siekman, who taught school in Boone County for more than 30 years, died Monday at her Hebron home. She was 84.

The daughter of a Methodist minister, Ms. Seikman was born in California, Ky. She knew well before she graduated from Walton High School that she wanted to become a teacher.

In the 1930s, at a time when few women had the opportunity to go to college, Ms. Seikman received her teaching certificate from Eastern Kentucky University. She started teaching high school students in Hebron.

In 1939, she married Wilfred Allen Siekman, and three children soon followed.

She quit teaching to raise her children, but when her husband died in 1959, she was left with a family to support and raise on her own.

Ms. Siekman took over her husband's mail route and held together the family farm. In the mid-1950s, at the height of a teacher shortage in Kentucky, she returned to teaching for Boone County Schools. She taught at Hebron Elementary School for many years.

Ms. Seikman returned to EKU to finish her teaching degree, and graduated in 1965. Around the same time, her daughter, Selma Ann Siekman, was getting certification to teach physical education.

"We went back and forth on Saturdays," Selma Siekman, of Hebron, said. "I worked on my master's degree while she finished up her (bachelor's degree)."

Ms. Seikman graduated in 1965.

"She was a real leader," her daughter said. "My sister was mentally challenged, and mother pushed the school system to meet the needs of mentally challenged students."

Boone County eventually implemented a program for students with special needs.

Ms. Seikman also was an elder emeritus of Bullittsville Christian Church in Burlington and a lifetime member of the Boone County PTA.

In her retirement, Ms. Seikman enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening.

"If you came to see her in the summer time, you never left without an armload of vegetables," her daughter said. "She raised them to give them away."
