Ocie Bell found good in all

Ocie Martin Nelson Bell could be counted upon to find something good in everyone.

'She could always find some good in everybody,' said a cousin, Wilma Lois Cook of Covington. 'I never heard her speak evil of anyone. She was the person you went to when you felt sad or down. She was always a delight to be around.'

Mrs. Bell, who turned 106 years old on Christmas Day, died at 7:35 a.m. Friday at Georgetown Community Hospital.

Mrs. Bell had been the oldest living member of Southside Baptist Church in Covington. She believed in hard work, loving families and appreciating the beauty of life, said her cousin. Mrs. Bell was known for her family dinners and her stories that spanned the century. 'She had a wonderful, sharp mind her whole life,' Mrs. Cook said.

Her grandfather and an uncle were killed in the Civil War. She was married the same year the Titanic sank.

Mrs. Bell was born on Christmas Day 1892. Her mother died 18 months later, and she was raised by grandparents on their farm near Corinth. Mrs. Cook's father and Mrs. Bell grew up together like brother and sister.

She married Vernor Martin in 1914 and moved with him to Covington. He died in 1934. Several years later she married Daniel Bell, who died in 1946.

'She never had any children of her own, but she would have made a perfect mother. She did make a perfect mother for a lot of us,' said Mrs. Cook.

She worked at Cin-Made, a packaging plant in St. Bernard, Ohio, until she was 72.

She had joined Southside Baptist church in the 1920s and remained an active member most of her life.

In the 1980s Mrs. Bell moved from Covington to Hinton, Ky., to live with a great-niece. She later moved to a nursing home after arthritis made it difficult to get around and her eyesight started to fail.

Even as age crept into her body, her mind and spirit remained strong and loving.

On her 100th birthday, she explained her secret to long life:

'I worked hard, and I helped other people. I went to church and Sunday school.'

Survivors include a niece, Beulah Fields of Georgetown; two great-nieces; and several generations of cousins.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Michael Hund, a "quiet fighter' who conquered adversity

With quiet determination, Michael Hund conquered bouts with Crohn's Disease to return this year to baseball, his favorite sport, at Grant County High School.

The 18-year-old senior was hospitalized twice during his junior year with problems related to the chronic intestinal disorder, forcing him to take a year off baseball and to sit out two soccer seasons.

'He was a quiet fighter to the point where he was able to be active again like before he got sick,' said his father, Ken Hund of Dry Ridge. 'And he was good. He played shortstop and batted leadoff and did some relief pitching. He was getting better and getting his strength back.'

With plans to attend Northern Kentucky University and live in a fixer-upper in Newport, Michael's future looked bright before he died in a single-car traffic accident Thursday in Grant County.

The tight-knit family is pulling together to remember the good times, his father said.

Ken Hund, the Boone County parks and recreation director, said he and his family are thankful they indulged Michael last Christmas with a trip to Key West, Fla.

'We went for broke. One of the highlights was the scuba diving. It's an unnatural thing to scuba dive, but Michael just took right to it. He had no fear,' his dad said.

Michael's last weeks were filled with things he loved: baseball, fishing and hanging out with friends.

'They had a great week of spring break,' his father said.

Michael went to a favorite fishing spot on a Grant County lake and caught more fish than he ever had, his father said.

Fifteen of Michael's friends gathered Friday night to grieve, his father said, a testament to the friendships he nurtured.

'Michael was soft-spoken, very easy going, well liked. He had a lot of friends,' Mr. Hund said.
