Owenton's Jane Young, served church

Along with their recollections, Jane Young's eight grandchildren will each have a quilt from their grandmother to treasure.

'She made a quilt for each of them, and she continued to sew until arthritis in her hands got too bad,' said Mrs. Young's son, Eugene Young of Owenton.

Mrs. Young, 79, of Owenton, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.

A native of the Bethany community in southeastern Owen County, Mrs. Young and her late husband, Leon, once operated a store there. 'It was just a country store. It burned in 1957, and they never built it back,' said Eugene Young.

His parents later moved to Owenton, where his mother worked as a clerk at the First Farmers Bank until her retirement several years ago, said Young, who is Owen County clerk.

Much of Mrs. Young's attention was directed toward her church and lodge. She and her husband were long-time members of the Elk Lick Baptist Church in rural Owen County.

His parents were very active at the church, Eugene Young said, and served as the clerks for the Owen County Baptist Association for more than 20 years, he said.

'She played the piano at her church,' recalled Mrs. Young's friend, Syble Pierson.

'She was very outgoing and very caring. Both she and her husband were very caring people, to everyone, no matter what their standing in the community,' said Mrs. Pierson.
